  1. it will only remove the lock if the system has been bled well to start with! thats with the cap off on the expansion tank while its getting up to temp and until the fans come on! then replace the cap and shut off, restart when cold and top up as needed!
  2. agreed andy, already mentioned the valves and guides further back. but as you say a further diagnostic is needed to find out for sure. can check the h/g with a gas test in the header tank. but if its not losing water surely the gasket wont be anywhere near far gone enough to produce that amount of oil, could be a number of things tbh, best get it checked out though and soon!
  3. piston rings dude. less compression in one or other cylinders would lead to that conclusion! the longer you left a prob like that the more bore wear would increase!
  4. thats one shiny bay (H). nice work fella, cant wait to see it in the flesh!
  5. an obd2 is really a ported obd1 tb anyway. not sure if they are interchangeable as standard tbh, dont think so!
  6. the standard breather on the vr6 is fed from the outlet on the rocker cover, back into the tb intake. if you were to bypass it the intake you could just relocate it in the engine bay and either put a small breather filter on it or an oil catch tank which you could them empty!
  7. words of wisdom there from mr ben! muppets need not apply!
  8. or you can buy individual hoses from samco direct. prob be cheaper then vw as well!
  9. if you leave the terminals in a postion that can easily got at and you tend to swank around the boot with metal object a lot i would stay clear. they can delver a nasty shock if you touch the terminals. never heard of them setting fire to cars tho, unless you're being stupid! i have one in mine and have to say it makes a big difference!
  10. it could be no more than a bit of valve guide or seal wear. may not be as bad as you think! do the comp test anyhow buddy, to be sure. how many miles has it done?
  11. initial prognosis on an obd2 car would be the throttle potentiometer for the idle hunting/abnormal tickover. a fault code check will highlight that if it is the case. if plugs/leads are not at peak performance this will be worsened and put more strain on the coilpack as a result! never had to sort anything with regard to the belt tensioner but i imagine they have intternal bearings and yours is worn? maybe you would have to replace the whole tensioner as i doubt you can just replace the bearing! hope this may be of some help, but not having an obd2 myself someone else may be more specific r
  12. 1997 Vr6 'back to the good old days' good to see you've returned to the fold buddy! welcome back!
  13. please dont think that you can just do the hub nut up by hand and leave it tho peeps! andy is right with the hand tight bit, but you need to seat the hub/bearings onto the stub axle first and then back the nut off, then retighten by hand using a 24mm socket, not forgetting the castle cap and split pin! otherwise it will destroy itself quicker than over tightening it! wheel bearing failure is not good tbh, as all those that saw me at inters this year will have realised by now!
  14. Also by disconnecting the battery there is less chance of you getting a airbag warning light upon refitting! the airbag warning light will come on no matter if you disconnect the battery, cross your legs or play hide and seek if replacing with an aftermarket wheel. unless you use a suitable resistor in place of the airbag one or you take the bulb out, which will be an mot failure next time round! good luck!

    new knob

think he now has one thats up to the job?
  16. the auxilary water pump runs constantly when the ignition is on and on some its very audible, others not so!
  17. looks like u blew all that money for nowt mark if you like the black stuff! paint cant be applied to as shiny polished unless its roughed up first. so i'd stick with the "blingliner" effert now and be done with it!
  18. i'd get it done as well tbh. its only minor repair work needed at this stage and if you leave it it will only progress and become more expensive to fix, and less disireable to buy should you want to sell it in the near future! do it, and keep an already great looking vr in good hands and on the road!
  19. i nipped mine up before inters and as most who know me on the forums, it exploded on the way down there about 20 mins from the campsite, setting both the pads and abs sensor on fire in the process! i would change it if i were you for the sake of 20 tokens!
  20. do you think it would be possible to make it a little earlier in the evening next month please? and what will the date be?
  21. i think what he's trying to say justin is that although the speedo needle is off the clock, if you're flat out racing that sort of beemer it must be around the 155 mark as thats what they are limited to, standard, by the electronic limiter!
  22. polo guys will be there in force again as usual, and if we can get the plot next to them we can make it a fantastic weekend again like last year!
  23. very disapointing in the number of takers for this one, especially as its reasonably central, easy to get to, usually very hot, and free entertainment fri/sat night! great company and the usual bbq feasts are the bonus, tho i will endeavour to take a shed load more beer this year as we ran out sat night last year and i got stung big time buying some bottles from the outside bar!
