  1. If VW do nothing else, they should sort those tailpipes. Do they really want their flagship Golf being compared to a motorised French milk carton?
  2. I can see the attraction - VW's most tuneable engine, in the lightest chassis it was ever available in. A bigger turbo and a lairy remap and you'll have one serious street legal go-kart on your hands there! I think the OZ titans suit it, by the way.
  3. By all means demand compensation from the garage if they promised you a completion date that they didn't deliver, but to a certain degree, it goes with the territory. Big mechanical jobs (especially conversions) are notorious for taking longer than expected and it doesn't matter who's doing them. All it takes is one siezed bolt, broken tool, unexpected part failure or wiring problem to put you days behind schedule. All in all, it's better not to rush these things. The quality of the final product will be proportional to the time and care taken putting it together. Remember that the show cars
  4. 10w40 (semi synthetic) or 5w40 (fully synthetic) is the usual choice for VR engines.
  5. Something may be interfering with the path of the mechanism. Could be a part of the door wiring loom coming away, aftermarket speakers making contact with the glass or mechanism, a substituted bolt/screw that is too long etc. If I remember rightly, there's also a D-shaped plastic clip on one of the operating cables which has to engage in a hole in the inner door skin.
  6. I don't like the front chrome one little bit - it looks like there's bull bars bolted onto the front of the thing - another example of thie "everyone wants an off-roader" thinking that is infecting the car industry right now. Wheels are nasty too - they would have to come off straight away... Sure, it could look nice with a bit of modding, but the beauty of the Mk4 R32 was that it was all done for you straight out of the factory and it didn't need touching. We've still got the GTI Lightweight to come though. Hopefully they'll do a better job of the styling on that....
  7. VW (Germany) Press release: http://www.volkswagen.de/vwcms_publish/vwcms/master_public/brand_portal/de30/models/golf/golf0/ausstattungslinien/golf_r32.html VWVortex (English) article here: http://www.vwvortex.com/artman/publish/volkswagen_news/article_1472.shtml What do you reckon? Love it or hate it, it's bound to bring the prices of second-hand Mk4 R32s down! Woo-Hoo!!!
  8. The OEM ones from VW are well worth the extra money, 'cos they can take kerb impacts without cracking (tried and tested!!).
  9. Although VW Quote 174BHP for both OBD1 & OBD2 versions of the 2.8 VR engine, the OBD2 has a less restrictive throttle body and manifold, so should make more power.
  10. Has anyone fitted these to their Mk3? I'm just after the part numbers....
  11. The engine in the Sharan VR6 95-00 is the same 2792cc 174BHP 12V unit as the Golf Mk3. All are OBD2. 2000 onwards Sharan V6s have the 204BHP 24v unit, same as the Golf Mk4 4Motion. For the early type 12v engine, I reckon a Shrick manifold, 268 cams and a remap would be a good bet. The extra torque will go a long way to counteracting the weight of the body and there's no reliability worries.
  12. VW quote 7.1 seconds for the 0-60 on a standard Golf VR6 and your figure is pretty close to that.
  13. I'm the first to object when money-grabbing camera partnerships prosecute thousands of perfectly-law abiding motorists for going 5 or 6mph over the limit, but 140mph IS a different matter. You've got to remember, a public road is an "uncontrolled" environment - you could run into debris on the road, a patch of oil, black ice or just about anything else without any warning and the consequences can be lethal. It's a shame that racetracks aren't made more accessible to the Public here in the UK. I find it amazing that, in these days of draconian speed enforcement, new racetracks are not popping
  14. Fishing for sympathy, you mean. No, I don't think so. I'm sure he just wants to know what will happen next and figures that many of us will be experienced in this area....
  15. I'm starting to REALLY want a set of those TT comp wheels....
  16. Mindless vandalism is the most gut-wrenching thing that can happen to one's pride & joy IMO, worse than being pranged or even theft. I feel your pain, man. I would take the payout, then buy the car back off the insurance company as salvage. If you don't fancy the hassle of selling on a Cat D recorded car, it will almost certainly be financially worth your while to break it. A 28,000 mile VR engine/gearbox (with proof of mileage) will make
  17. Yikes!! The other day I read about someone who actually got their car SEIZED by the Police for doing that sort of speed, so all things considered you're lucky. You could get away with a 3 month ban if you have a previously unblemished record and get a good specialist Solicitor. A good place to go to discuss recommendations and your likely punishment is PepiPoo.com's forum: http://pepipoo.com/NewForums2/index.php Being a fellow speed freak, I have found this forum useful on several occasions.
  18. Like the Audi TT Comps - those rims look well nice on a Mk3.
  19. The thermostat is inside a plastic housing below and just forward of the coil pack, attached to the front of the engine. The housing has 2 or 3 sensors plugged into it. Water and oil temperature should both be below 110 degrees C in normal driving on an average temperature day. It might be worth draining your coolant and putting some fresh stuff in to see if that helps. Use G12 coolant with distilled water - 50/50 mix.
  20. No, not hard, but you have to be quite rough with it. :-)
