  1. For the ultimate test, they should stick a set on a car and drive it round High Wycombe's potholed excuse for a road system for 10 minutes. Then I'll be convinced!!! Where do you get them from anyway?
  2. Different VR6 OBD1 manifolds, Left to Right: 2.8 VR6 manifold, early engraved type (rare) 2.8/2.9 VR6 manifold, early type 2.8/2.9 VR6 mainfold, later type Difference between 2.8 & 2.9 manifolds (later type) 2.8 on the left, 2.9 on the right. All of the manifolds pictured above are OBD1. The OBD2 2.8 manifold is similar to the 2.9 one in the above picture (marked "E"), except with changes to the throttle body mounting face and no ISV pipe flange (the flange right next to the TB mounting face). All OBD2 manifolds were the same design. An OBD1 manifold will not fit straight on an OBD2 en
  3. I like it. A lot. With the 1.8T engine it already has a whole load of tuning goodies available for it before it's even launched. And with a weight of just over 1000kg it will give you plenty of bang for your buck. Styling is nice too. Looks like a mini Golf GTi. I think if I had to buy a new VW, it would be between one of these and the Eos.
  4. Shop around for another quote on the headgasket. You should be able to find someone that will do it for less than

    Mk4 cab dash

The dash shell itself is identical to a normal mk3 one other than the texture coating, so it's a straight swap. The Mk3.5 steering wheel (if you have one) is a straight swap too. There's a bit of detail and some pics in my project thread here: http://www.vr6oc.com/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?50618
  6. 0W-40 is generally too thin for a 80,000 mile+ VR6 engine. Synta Silver (semi synthetic) 10W-40 is a good all year round choice for general road use. Castrol Magnatec 10W-40 is an acceptable alternative if you live miles away from a VW/Audi/Seat dealer.
  7. Here's what I think you're after: http://www.ngpracing.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=FKNS5003a&Category_Code=mk3vw FK Powerlooks. You just gotta find a UK supplier now. Highly unlikely to be available in RHD, but sticking your standard headlamps back on every year for your MOT isn't much of a problem.
  8. If you discount angel eyes, you have a choice of: (black Mk4 style) or (Morette twin) or (Hella Twin) The morette twin is (and always has been) the best looking Mk3 headlamp kit, but it's mind-numbingly expensive. On balance, I'd go for Mk4 blacks.
  9. I see a lot more TVRs on the hard shoulder with the bonnet up than I do VWs. Early Chims used to blow their own rear axles, I believe. Still, we ARE talking about a different league of performance car here. If you'd spent that much money on a car, you would EXPECT to be able to blow away ANY hot hatch, including supercharged VR6s.
  10. The Schrick on ebay is an OBD1 so will fit all VR6 'rados.
  11. The belt wraps around the PAS pump, water pump, alternator & the idler pulley on the tensioner. It also drives the air-con pump on cars that have one. Any of these components can cause excessive noise when they are worn. It's usually the tensioner pulley (maybe because this is the smallest pulley and therefore turns the fastest?). Try a new belt and if that doesn't work, look at the tensioner next.
  12. Do you get a lot of extra noise after fitting a decat? i.e. boominess at motorway speeds etc?
  13. Even I managed to beat one of those!! The next generation of Mini Coopers will be turbocharged. Maybe those will be a bit more competitive in the performance department!
  14. Farnborough area' date=' just off J4a of the M3. [/quote'] Hi Nick, I stay in Fleet, also off J4A of the M3. Will give you a wave on the road if there's a chance. Yeah - drive through Fleet sometimes. Look out for the Cabrio (next month) !!!
  15. As far as I know, the Government have no plans to hike the duty on LPG regardless of how many people switch to it. As far as I can tell this is just an urban myth, based on mistrust of Blair's lot (which is understandable!).
  16. Farnborough area, just off J4a of the M3.
  17. True, the type R is a nice light aluminium engine and is well-balanced front-rear whereas the VR is very front-heavy.
  18. Although conventional tuning will let you keep up with modern hot hatches, if you want to annihilate them supercharging is the way to go. Supercharger kits take the VR to the next level of performance. Anything between 260 to 300BHP (230 to 270lb-ft) is possible without any internal engine mods, although upgrades to your brakes are recommended and a Quaife LSD is a good idea for 300BHP+ Budget for
  19. I work as an IT Consultant in Hampshire. Nice 40 mile drive to work every day. Can't wait to get the VR back!!!
  20. Does anyone know how long heat wrap on a manny is likely to last for? What is the best make of heat wrap to go for, and where is it available from?
  21. My last VR was "mildly tuned" - equipped with a Schrick manifold, 264 cams and a unichip. Dyno'd at 210BHP & 207lb-ft. It had no trouble seeing off Civic Type Rs off the line. The Civic would start to close the gap a bit once it had got the revs up, but the VR was already way ahead at this point.... This is not surprising, since the Civic may have 200BHP, but it's max torque is only 144 lb-ft. Power indicates how much work the engine can do at peak revs, but it's torque that determines how quickly it gets there, i.e. how fast the car accelerates! You are correct about the suspension. A
