  1. as posted on the other thread...if in berks try tony at automotive solutions in sonning (just of a4 east of reading), call 01189 699903.
  2. i strongly recommend tony at automotive solutions in sonning (so just off j10 of m4, then off a308 (i think) onto a4 then turn off and you're there). give him a buzz on 01189 699903, he's a nice bloke, who knows vr's very well and does superb work at a very good price.
  3. erm....dunno what scoob you drove, but the one i drove the turbo came in at about 1500rpm, which is a lot easier to do than keep a vr6 above 4k.
  4. if they're genuine vw anni rims they won't need spigots.
  5. erm - oil resused?! thats bloody stupid, its not like it costs much. anyway, the smoke from back of engine...prob just manifold leaking or something, it often does it if you've disturbed it and it will stop.
  6. just to give an idea, what with the head rebuild the total bill is prob gonna be just into 4 figures.
  7. £600 they shouldn't really be going at 60k though (disclaimer - i ain't saying they're fine though). seademon - i was in the same situation last year, get it done now so you know its fine.
  8. i found the scoob was effortless to drive fast, certainly a lot easier than the vr6.
  9. isn?t that a bit optimistic :? my thoughts exactly....and its SWAP not SWOP [ Edited Tue Jan 18 2005' date= 10:49AM ]
  10. well, with replies like that you'd put of anyone who was planning on bidding!
  11. just to ad, there was no rattling or warning...the only thing that did happen was the car lost power a day or so before, i guess the chai may have jumped a tooth at that point. the damage to engine was very little (lucky), it bent four valves.
  12. ok....this is why you wanna change your timing chains at around 100k. these are form a '96 highline that had 108k on it, the only omitigating circumstance is that the car hadn't been used for 6 months and was suddenly thrown into everyday use. but even so i suspect the damage was only sped up by that. what happened was the lower chain runner wore through completely so the chain was running on the studs...this then snapped the chain. remains of the bottom runner - the studs (you can see where the chain wore them away) - the lower cover (you can see where the chain was rubbing on it) - the
  13. does sound like chains...whcih reminds me, i have some scary pics of what happened on a '96 highline at 108k. i'll upload them and post them.
  14. someone said on the prevous page that a scoob or evo isn't practical as an everyday car...i disagree, a very useable safe car. if you do enough miles to worry about the fuel costs get a diesel.
  15. yep...MT90 is fine, i just can't remember what grade it is so didn't answer.
  16. don't feel sorry for him, he's selling a car and should expect q's....especially if he doesn't describe it accurately.
  17. man...you guys are gonna get the vr6 a bad rep with the cops. lets hope they don't turn into nova's in the cops eyes (i.e. something always illegal on them...so they pull you all the time)
  18. i reckon 16" RC's would be better than 17"s...will look fairly similar but have much better handling.
  19. yep...i'd go with your assessment. the pressure test really should have shown where it was coming out....was he on his own when he did it, or were you watching as well? could be the thermo housing itself...very common. its so hard to tell where precisely its coming from down there. another option, if you hadn't found a leak, would have been that the thermostat was sticking and causing the coolant tank to overflow. usually a head gasket only goes as a result of overheating...usually caused by the coolant leaking out and the dumbass driver ignoring the flashing light! lol
  20. its just to expensive. £20k ish aren't they...thats scooby money IMO (actually, get a 'bug-eyed' scooby like antera has, bloody bargain...£10k for very low mileage examples)
  21. yeah, the front wheel arch is bigger anyway, as the wheels have to turn. same on all cars. if you had the same gap at both ends the car would look 'nose down'.
  22. the propblem with motorsport is theres lots of people wanting jobs in that field, and thus a lot of them are very highly qualified with motorsport related qualfications. first things first, call every single motorsport company in your area. you never know if you don't ask. i can point you to a few if you tell me where you are, but as you're looking at renault and prodrive i'm guessing you're in oxfordshire. try williams (near renault), theres also loads in brackley/silverstone such as BAR. you're most likely gonna have to start at a lower category team though. if you have no luck that way you
  23. RC's, yep, absolutely...a quality choice. nicer than splits IMO. you'll have a heart attack when you find out how much the RC's cost though, they do come up second hand quite often though.
