acf8181 0
as said in that thread, the vr6 engine is actually very simple mechanically, its easier to work on than my mkII 8v IMO.
VR6Pete 1,455
I'm glad I had mine done, the chain noise was enough of warning to put my hand in my pocket to get them done!
stu h 0
didn't mean any offence or owt acf-just pulling you plonker as it were it is interesting tho -one comment made later in the thread about them only really coming apart when you take them out the engineI'm amazed vw deny they need changing -surely they took the engines apart after testing?still -Hopefully won't have to worry for a while, couple of years if i still have the car[ Edited Wed Apr 06 2005, 08:01PM ]
vr6freak 3
I'll need my chains done soon. dreading the price if i pay sleath of amd to sort them. i possible might tackle this myself. It cannot be any harder than rebuilding my bloody Renault 5 turbo.

stu h 0
quote from kevhaywire on the the corrado forum:"Highlines got the upgraded tensioning components as standard and don't need doing at 100K."Is that true? I certainly didn't know that before
binliner 0
i do fancy doing a 'how to check the condition of the top runner' guidetalking of guides whatever happened to the buyers gide you were doing? is that up yet?
andy 0
quote from kevhaywire on the the corrado forum:"Highlines got the upgraded tensioning components as standard and don't need doing at 100K."Is that true? I certainly didn't know that beforeI'm not sure about that either, why would it only be Highlines? I could beleive it if it was all OBD2 models, I think he actually means the MK4 24V VR6 engine. I won't stick my neck out though because he reckons that came from Vince at Stealth.
VRmonster 1
well i will be ripping my block apart next week andrew, so if you like a can take some pics etc, as my chains have started to rattle and scrape, so can just strip off the top half of the chain setup to make it look like a checkup not a full on replacement. or if you want you can take the trip up to me and help, lol. badboyV6 4
Thats nonsense Stu, the Highline was only a a special model that came with a few (admittedly lovely) extras.... Only late cars 97 on had the chain adjustment (i think someone had mentioned an engine code before in a thread) This topics been covered soooo many times.... You still looking to buy a corrado then Stu- seeing as your loitering around the corrado.net forums- you dirty stopout ;-)
stu h 0
lol -I'd love one -and keep looking at the classifieds on there but I can't afford what I want in reality so I'll stick with my little golf
Eat this 2
i had mine done for 250 plus partstis sweet nowwhere??
acf8181 0
they did change the chains for '97 on cars......they went from a twin row top chain to a single row....so this will theoretically put less wear on the top runner. but it was only the mkIV's that got the tougher runner.binliner - some is done and has been sent to admin, its awaiting a tart up before going online i believe. fabio_vr6 0
Highlines have the same engine as a normal vr6 so to speak, So chains are the same!
stu h 0
exactly, unless its an obd2 thing -but thats not the case is it?did pete say what state his runners were in when he had his car done recently

binliner 0
its not an obd2 as my 1996 VR has double top chain, my 97 highline had single
stu h 0
so its b*llocks then?
binliner 0
no... its a 97 on thing as was posted earlier I thinkbtw there are posts on that thread holding up the arguement that 100k doesnt necessarily mean your chains need doing
acf8181 0
yep...'97 on have single chains.thing is....its like russian roulette isn't it....some don't wear, but you gotta say the vast majority do.we need to get a guide on how to check on the condition of the top runner i think...its the sensible thing to do. you cant really see down to bottom runners, but if top was fine you gotta suspect bottom will be as the top runners the one that wears terribly. Valver 0
From my personal view I think it's worth dong the chains on higher mileage engines just for peace of mind if nothing else. My donor engine, 140k OBD1 had no chain clatter whatsoever but when we took the covers off the top tensioner was already cracked in 3 pieces and was holding itself together - was worn almost to the rivets so I imagine it was just a matter of time before the clattering would have begun.... :? acf8181 0
its all about risk analysis...worst case scenario it'll trash valves, pistons, head, bits will get down to big ends.on the other hand you could just bend a couple of valves, have the head off yourself and get a couple of new valves put in for peanuts....best thing to do is just inform people, and let them decide for themselves.but i'll try and get a 'how to check the top runner' guide done.
