  1. Got my wheels back, in record time too seeing as they said 3 weeks. To say this is a powdercoat the outcome is awesome, they glint like diamond cut but without the score marks, in sunlight they flash like chrome, in dark they go shadowy and close up they look like polished metal. As they were stripped down i weighed them, not too heavy either
  2. I flushed the cooling system which removed a fair amount of crud, before the coolant was a milky opaque pink but after the flush and a good rinse its now clear pink, result. While the coolant was drained i disconnected the header tank as it had so much crap on it you couldnt see the level of coolant in it. I tried everything to get the crust off the inside, dishwasher tabs, bleach with ice cubes, fizzer bomb things. In the end the thing that worked was a bottle of coke and some kiddies play sand, then about an hour of rough shaking and swirling then left to stand overnight and then more shaki
  3. Even though i said dont worry about them no rush, they still knocked them out in 3 days for me, which i thought was very good To say im pleased with how they turned out is an understatement. The finish is exactly what i wanted aswell, they arent a mirror chrome finish more high polished or diamond cut without the score marks, they glint like diamond cut wheels too. In sunlight they brighten right up almost chromey, but in low light they go very shadowy and dark. While they were all stripped down i weighed them too, not heavy at all I spent hours last night giving them 2 thorough coats of
  4. yea thats what im getting at the moment, nothing nothing, then whack. Was having a look at MAFs and even a non bosch one is like 60 quid. I was hoping i might be able to get the cheaper 2.0 MAF but my car uses a hot film not the hot wire style which no other engines seem to use what i dont get is how would it create a short to ground, which by definition means that the power or signal wire is short circuited to the ground wire
  5. youd have to cut a hole, how good of a job you make of it would depend on your skill and confidence with the tools. if you want US style side markers when the lights are on then yea sidelights is correct. If you wanted them on all the time, like daytime running lights, then youd need ignition live.
  6. LHD lights will also blind everyone on the road as the cut is on the edge of the road in this country nowt chavvy about these i dont think. but very mean and stealthy looking, yesyes
  7. thats a peiceapiss if you can do the backs mate. Take mirror inside covers off, carefully though, the locating tabs are typically VW dismantle unfriendly, you dont have to but its easier. Pry the handle cover off with a screw driver, undo the bolts under the cover then get your fingers or your preffered prizing tool under the edge and yank it off, there will be vaious wires connected to the card for mirrors windows speaker etc so make sure you either unplug them or pop the switches out. And your pic answered a question i had about those pieces of polystyrene, i couldnt work out where the littl
  8. And here we have the VRs at their familiar watering hole... The only time i see other VRs is at the local station lol
  9. mine pops on the overrun yea, it can take a few seconds to start too, sometimes it will start like a modern car, half a second first crank, other times i will have to hold it for 2 or 3 secs. If left to idle when hot or cold, like in traffic, it will bog down then the idle control will rev it up a bit then its fine. Sometimes if im on a roundabout and going for a gap, just when you need to have a good take off, it can bog down then too and feel like its going to stall, though it never does
  10. Youd have to find out how much shocker and arch clearance you have to give you a better idea of how much you have to play with. Then you can input your existing wheels offset and the wheels you want and it will tell you how much less clearance you would have using this calculator http://www.1010tires.com/WheelOffsetCalculator.asp
  11. interested in this too as i have the 553 G70 short to ground intermittent fault on mine too. Even though on measuring blocks the MAF will read an airflow amount and will raise if you press the throttle
  12. the speakers are fastened to the rear cards so dont just yank them away, you need to unclip the plug for them
  13. its a bit dusty atm and on the stock wheels. When i get my 17s back and on im gonna give the car another once over with the final finishing polish and seal again ( after the feckers at the garage marked up all the panels with their grubby mechanic hands grrr ) and take pics of her in all her glory had a more pressing issue today too, my Y-pipe was split and had leaked out some coolant, not a lot, a litre at most So I got the mk4 y-pipe, part 1J0121087B, for a tenth of the price of the VR6 part as that comes with a length of pipe too which i didnt need Was a bit of a pain in the arse to get me
  14. I love these new tech in old soul builds
  15. Ive replaced my front speakers as the new head unit has managed to overpower them and they buzz crack and reverberate now. Thought it may interest anyone planning to change speakers and inspire them in mounting options. I orginally wanted some Alpine TypeS 171a components that i had a couple years back but they dont make them any more. So on recommendation i got a set of InPhase XTC6 components as they have similar power handling and will work well with the head unit driving them, and for the money they are well worth it!! They are the same striking yellow that is shown on the box! The audiop
  16. Ian_rogers you have it backwards mate, you are referring to low pass filter which as you rightly state would only send bass frequencies to the speakers. You want the high pass filter on, the head unit is smart and as long as you plugged the sub amp into the subwoofer preout on the back off the head unit it will know to let the full range of frequencies reach the subwoofer while blocking the lower range from the other 2 preouts (front and rear), the idea being only the sub plays bass frequencies and the front and rears play the rest ie: if you set the high pass filter to 80hz the stereo will al
  17. As a few people have encountered this problem i thought i would post up a 5 min guide on how to stop the dip beam lights coming on dimly with the sidelights, some have this feature, others do not. This guide will show you how to solve it, either if you just dont want them to come on with the sidelights, or if you are fitting HIDS. This is really an essential step when installing HIDs as they flicker and strobe with the dim dip feature in place. Part #s that end in G, AH (rear fog only), and AJ (front and rear fogs) have the dim-dip wire. Part #s that end in F (motorised headlight adjustment)

  19. Looking at my wheels even after a good clean they are in pretty corroded and bad shape, and the whole centres are absolutely buggered, beyond repair, the dishes are either bent or dented, the cantre bolts are peeling too and the centre caps are delaminating, so they are being replaced with new ones, dishes, centre bolts and centre caps all with brand new. These were sent off yesterday to be refurbed. Check the HEL braided hose peeking out behind the disc They are going off to a place called aerocoat in great yarmouth for their special aeromax finish. I wanted a polished effect like the m
  20. fitting side markers wouldnt be hard but depending on how they mounted would depend on how easy it would be to make a good job. As for wiring very easy just splice them in to the desired feed, DRL style would need ignition live, only when lights are on would need the sidelights power
  21. the blue cable in the radio loom is exactly for this purpose, antenna power feed/remote turn on when the radio is switched on, i have an inch high shark style aerial and with the amplifier connected it gets good reception too
  22. all universal gearknobs are the biggest diameter and have shrinking collars or springs to trim up the loose space. then they will fasten in place with 1 or more grub screws.
