Oooooooh right. Ok. I thought it was a certain type of tyre The Schmidt TH Line's aren't that wide, they're only 8" I think.
-
Ok, noob question for a fairly new dubber Im selling my 1.4 mk3 which was my first car to my boyfriend, so he can use it as his first car. When I get the money from this, Im ordering my babies - 17" Schmidt TH Line's What I would like to know is, is there a name for the smooth, rounded edge tyres that you see fitted with these kind of alloys? What can you recommend? Sorry if there is an obvious answer to this question lol 8-) Thanks. x

No, it was my boyfriend who said I could do it - but he heard it from someone else and isnt 100% sure whether I can or not.

As some of you may know, my VR has recently just had a new engine fitted because of the big end bearings going kapput on the old one. I ordered an engine from a breakers in Chester who were recommended by my mechanic, who I always take my car to. I was assured that they were very genuine so took my mechanics advice and got delivered a '97 highline engine with a supposedley 68,000 on the clock for 380 quid - although I have no history for this engine as proof of the mileage or any works carried out :S The VR now runs beautifully but I would like to check when the last MOT was on that engine/

My poor VR is getting sorted this week. Managed to get an engine with 68k for £350 inc VAT and delivery from Chester to Gatwick. Fingers crossed Ill have it back on the road in a week or so. I just hope this one doesnt go drastically wrong! I insured my 1.4 again, gave it a nice long run upto Essex after it had been sitting for months. All was fine until I got back home and the starter motor packed up! So now, im without a car completely. Definitley think I have a curse when it comes to bloody VW's, and although ive had nothing but problems, I still wouldnt drive anything else (l)

I will speak to my mechanic again tomorrow, after I have spoken to a recommended breakers who apparently have a VR6 engine spare. He did say though that it wasnt worth repairing, it would cost too much and that it would be cheaper to spend a couple hundred on a new engine.

Well I called my mechanic this afternoon because he said he was going to have a look at it this morning, with another mechanic who specialises in VW's. The first thing he said when he picked up the phone was - "The technical term for your car is, it's f*cked". He stripped the engine and saw that the big ends were completely and utterly knackered, we think the old oil was covering the problem up, so once it was drained it revealed what was really wrong with the car. The d1ck who sold me that poor VR is on my hitlist.
-
Yeah im hoping after the new engine is put in, that will be it for a little while. It can go either way, it will either cause a domino affect of more problems OR it will run sweet as a nut...Ill just have to wait and see. Still, at least I still have my 1.4 that I can drive....god, this is gonna suck so hard after driving the VR
-
The car was on 120k, engine was on 93k.

After the problem I had with my VR6, turns out the big ends have gone. Completely f*cking knackered. Been crying and throwing wobblies all afternoon, im so gutted. Gonna replace the engine, just means Im without my beloved VR for a few weeks. So, so gutted. If anyone knows of a good second hand engine that's going anywhere, please let me know!

Right ok then. I just spoke to my boyfriend's mate who works at Kwik Fit (dont get me started) and he said that the oil filter may have been put in the wrong way round, which is why the oil isnt circulating properly. I dont know whether that's possible, I thought Oil Filters only went in one way?
-
If it's definitley the tappets, how much could the cost be??
-
That would be a MASSIVE help. An hour's a bit of a drive though to help a damsel in distress lol.
-
Im in Crawley. Its definitley coming from the top, is it expensive getting tappets replaced? I think my mechanic would tell me to take it to a vw specialist, I get the feeling he's not that confident with my VR6 lol.
-
That sounds most likely actually. Is there anything I can do to make sure it's definitley the tappets that have gone?
-
Oil level is fine, checked that once we were finished. What is the other type of oil filter? I just got a basic VW one, fitted in fine no problems - looked identical to the old one we took out. My VR is a 93, but the engine is a OBD2 94 i think.
-
Yeah fuel filter is fine, the noise is coming from the engine. Its so loud, I had to turn the engine off to be able to hear my dad talking who was standing next to me... There are no warning lights, the noise seems to be worse the less I rev it actually.
-
I used 10w/40 semi synthetic, Mobil I think is the make. We used 5 litres of that and then a 1 litre bottle of exactly the same stuff, just a different make. We didnt have any trouble apart from getting the oil filter of, didnt realise it used an alan key but that was it. Basically, I was getting noisey tappets on start-up, but now its a constant ultra loud knocking after changing the filters and oil.
-
Argh!! Right, me and my dad just spent a good 2 hours outside sorting out the VR, after I was advised by my mechanic to do an oil change which will help with the noisy tappets on start up. Well, I brought some new oil, aswell as an oil filter and a fuel filter. Drained all the oil, topped it up with the new stuff, put the new oil filter on - easy peasy. Now when I start it up, the tappets are insanely loud and the car is shaking violently. I left it running for 5 minutes for the oil to work its way through, but after 10 minutes, Its STILL stupidley loud, shakey and rumbly. Why? Why after I ga

Haha, yep! My dad used to say that about this 2.8i Ford Capri, I never beleived him until I got the VR.

I dont know why young people end up paying so much money on insurance!! Im 19 with only 1 years NCB and I pay £133 a month with KwikFit - but that was with a hefty £300 deposit. As for fuel economy, that's what my issue was when I first got my VR6. I was constantly looking at the trip computer, constantly watching my pennies disappear at the petrol station - but now, I dont care! Its a VR6 lol, Yeah I might spent £150+ a month on petrol, but at least I have a car that makes me smile when I drive it. I use my car for work and at the moment, the mpg is sitting on 12-17. If there's an empty

Come to think of it, the guy I brought my VR off didnt look that much different to that :S
-
That's strange. I was looking at quotes for Corrado's and they were coming up way more than the golf's. Considerably more. My friend is 19 - same age as me and has a very smart yellow corrado VR6 that he pays £2k a year on insurance for. I did say that I was going to get a Corrado as my next toy in a few years, but I hate to admit that Im leaning towards an R32 now.
-
Ah ok, I guess it's just a show-car thing then
-
Haha, I'd be pretty ashamed if that guy owned any sort of VW. He suits a Nova/Corsa/Saxo/generic chav crap.
