Could be your cam sensor which is very quick and easy to replace and the symptoms of a faulty one is a loss of around 20-30bhp and a big flat spot. However sounds more like timing is out... has any work been done on it recently?
-
... and what mods too? On a normally aspirated VR that is very good.
-
How much do you want for the cams? I don't have a Shrick inlet manifold (I only have a stock one) but I assume they will still fit my car? How many hours labour is it for a decent garage to fit a set of cams?

So is the general consensus: don't bother telling my ins. company? I can't see why I should bother, as mounts are mounts... they don't improve the performance, only improve the longevity over standard mounts, all they are is stronger and reduce wear and tear to other engine components. Cheers for any comments.

Cheers for your reply. Do you think they sound the same as the Konigsports (which I know have adjustable dampers) or the Highsports...no idea what make of dampers they use though? Anyone else? Have there been any bad experiences with JOM products or are they generally very good? I like the sound of the 45mm drop with the springs and koni shocks. Cheers for any help.

Do you know if Vibratechnic engine mounts will affect my insurance premium? I haven't told them as it's not a performance / styling mod. It's just to make the engine rock less and be more reliable. Although should I tell them just in case? I'm with Elephant.co.uk (which is the same as Admiral) but only been with them 6 months - so not sure how flexible they are with mods. Cheers Matt

Hi I've seen this link for JOM coilovers which I've been told have Koni dampers (although for some reason it doesn't say this in the first link for the coilovers) but the price looks good: http://www.dpmautostyling.co.uk/catalogue/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=379_391_144_188&products_id=712 Here's a link about the JOM spring/shock kits which does say they use Koni fixed rate dampers. http://www.dpmautostyling.co.uk/catalogue/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=379_391_143_213&sort=20a&page=2 The price is very similar to a GMAX which seems very good but the fact the

Hi I'm with Elephant.co.uk (which is Admiral). Only been with them for 6 months so not sure how flexible or good they are regarding certain modifications. I recently had Vibratechnic uprated engine mounts fitted (front and gearbox mounts only). It hasn't dawned on me that this may affect my insurance as it isn't a performance modification.. just makes the engine parts more reliable... however I always like to be honest just to be safe... should I tell them? Will my new engine mounts make my premium go up??! Cheers for any help Matt

Anyone? What are the symptoms of a steering rack on it's way out? Is it very easy for the likes of The Phirm to get access to and see what condition my steering rack is in? Are reconditioned racks much cheaper and equally as good? I know Corrado ones go for around £150-200 from ESP and I think GSF. VAG ones are over £800!! How good are ESP and GSF reconditioned steering racks? And how much is the labour to fit one? What exactly is "play in steering", as I've heard other members complain of this sometimes? Is this when you're driving a long and you can turn the steering wheel slightly

I only use my car as a daily driver to and from work... no track day use. So don't want to spend a fortune but do want my car lowered so it "looks lowered" and also handles better... but more important than anything else is I want a kit that will last at least as long as standard suspension. What I really need to know is how an equally good set of spring/shocks will last compared to an equally good set of coilovers - example, koni shocks/springs, compared to Koni coilovers etc. Do coilovers last longer normally? I know spring shock combos are extremely good at improving the handling but all

Hi. Just looked up the bloke's email that he sent me. His name is Ian and his nickname is "Alpina". His email is Alpina527@aol.com However he did say enlarged throttle bodies/butterflies only have benefits for VR6's earlier than 1995. Won't work on later model vr's. By the way, VR6's earlier than 1995 are referred to as "OBD1", and VR's made from 1995 onwards are "OBD2". This just refers to the ECU (stands for on-board diagnostics). Basically if your car is an ODB1 then a throttle body mod will definitely see a 5-10bhp increase, maybe even more, depending on what is done to the throttle

I'll prob leave it then if it's fairly common for new bearings to make a slight noise. Cheers. -
Background faint hum/whistling noise in engine bay

Thanks Bazz. Funny you say that yesterday while I was driving a long my foot lightly pressed the clutch (just lightly before the clutch was engaged) and I could hear a faint shrill noise and it disappeared as soon as I lifted my foot off.. did it each time I tested it. My car has a new clutch - only fitted last week when I had my chains done. Surely the clutch release bearing, cylinder slave etc would all be replaced as part of the "clutch kit"? Thanks for your help. Could the noise simply be because my clutch is "bedding in" and will settle down? The noise is very very faint mind you, an -
What would be the symptoms of a damaged or "one the way out" steering rack? And (I know it's expensive) how much for a new standard one, or how much for an uprated one (if there are uprated ones available)? And what's the labour time to fit?
-
Yes it's the PAS pump. Nothing to worry about. I have it too and so do most with power steering. It's only something to worry about if you hear a "knocking" sound when you go round corners. Otherwise your car is fine mate.

What year is your VR6? If it's later than 1995 (M reg) onwards you will have no gain whatsoever with a superchip. What it will do is improve the drivability which can be a good thing. However there have been a few bad experiences of people using superchips. You are better of going to Stealth Racing, a VR specialist and will fit a remappable chip (called a 'rechip') for £300. Same price as a superchip but far better because your car can be remapped any time you want in the future when you add more mods to your car - the remap gets the most power from your mods...far better than a superchip

Sounds like the tensioner itself wasn't the solution. It could be a slightly slack/stretched chain or worn guide rails. I would replace the lot to be safe.. especially if the rattle has come back. Not worth the risk.

Hi When ever possible after I have parked up and turned the engine off I twist the steering wheel a bit until the lock comes on (as it does with any car). Occasionally I find the lock doesn't come on no matter how much I twist the steering wheel to get the lock on. My question is..is it damaging to twist the steering wheel too much while the car is stationary? Will it cause undue stress on the steering rack or is the VR6 steering rack very tough? What ever the answer I don't bother putting the steering lock on unless I comes on straight away. Thanks for any help. Cheers Matt

Background faint hum/whistling noise in engine bay

lol that is what it sounds like. Listened out for it this evening and couldn't hear it... seems intermittent whatever it is... hopefully nothing major. -
Thanks guys. Felch, I may be wrong but the two splitters in each of the links look the same. Are they different? However the one I am after is actually the one on your car Felch... is that a VW one? It looks the same as VR6pete's (club chairman) splitter which looks v nice. Pete, what spliter do you have on your green vr? I'm looking to get my car lowered 35mm on a gmax kit. How far off the ground will the bottom of the deep front splitter be from touching the ground approximately? Cheers for your help.

Background faint hum/whistling noise in engine bay
matth76 replied to matth76's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
Thanks for all your help. I had another listen to the car today and it seems very similar to the high pitch "shrill" sound of crickets in the garden. It is very faint mind you and I can only hear it if I open the window and really listen. I've heard many other normal cars sound like this, even my gf's 2 year old 1.2 polo does a similar sound, especially when you are in too higher gear and you try to rev it. It won't be my water pump as that is new and is a different sound. My 6 branch is very new too. It's not the PAS pump as that noise is different too. This is a mystery. I suspect it -

Hi.. thanks for your message. No it seems more like a faint whistle.
