speedo's fine defo no prob there. the guy said g68 is crankshaft sensor. as for the g40 sensor i can vouch for that being intermittent coz sometimes the car just feels guttless and doesnt want to accelerate and other times it feels like it wants to fly and theres no holding it back!! and does run rough! i ll try the cheapest solution 1st and clean it. is there any thing i need to know about cleaning the g40 sensor or can i just remove it clean it and refit it?

he gave me a print off with the fault codes on, it reads as follows: 00281-vehicle speed sensor(G68) 27-00 -implausible signal 00515-camshaft position (hall) sensor(G40) 30-10 -open or short to B+ - intermittent 00513-engine speed sensor(G28) 03-00-no signal i was told to ignore the last as the faults were read with the engine off and that comes up. thanks for the feed back. its quite quiet when cold but when warmed up rather rattly. the guy at the garage said it was noisey at top end. best i get it investigated a bit more. it would be nice to have it running nice and quiet, is doing the tappets a long job?
-
apparently its the engine speed sensor which appears when the engine isnt running, the guy told me to ignore that 1. its the vehicle speed sensor which is the problem think he said its on the crankshaft. that sensor and the hall sensor relay information to each other in order for smooth running? thats how i understood it. had the vr on vag com and its showing 2 faults one is a speed sensor-its not working at all! and the other is hall sensor which is intermittent. what is peoples experience with these faults and where is the best place to get new sensors?

my vr6 has covered 84k miles but it has noisey valve gear is it likely that the chain and sprockets are worn or would it be more likely to be worn tensioners? going by the mileage and the fact that the car has full vw service history i find it hard to believe chains etc would be worn!? not impossible tho. would just like other peoples opinion on the matter cheers.

i bought a metal 1 just the other day made by sealy i think. £17!! its a must have for any DIY servicing VR6 owner!
-
cheers for that. theres a differing of opinions i removed the plug lead rails and coil pack etc and showed it to a mechanic he thinks its all coming from the cam cover not the top chain cover. i ll remove the chain cover any way as i want to inspect the tensioners just in case. got some red silicone sealant at work called RTV, thats brilliant stuff i ll use that when putting it back together. i ve got an leak on the vr, well a couple, 1 seems to be from the cam cover rubber seal and the other from the timing chain cover that bolts to the head (the rubber seal again) does any body have these 2 seals that they dont need coz id be happy to take them off your hands. im going to try an bodge it to make a quick repair as the leak is quite bad. if any 1 can help me out please let me know.

i bought some bosch 1s from GSF and they're fine.

mines doing exactly the same miss/hessitation. it misses regardless of what speed the engine is running tho? checked coil pack no arcing, changed plugs, changed the leads twice! still no better, although when i run it on 95ron fuel it runs terrible so i always put optimax in which doesnt cure it but makes it run smoother! its going on a vag com next week so hopefuly that'll shed some light on the problem.

does anyone do or know of any club meets in the norfolk area? i ve got a couple of mates with vr6's (golf), 1's a highline. but being married they often have other things going on. but there just doesn't seem to be much activity on the vr6 scene around here. [ Edited ]

i ve got a similar noise, only does when going slowly. checked the ball joints but they all seem ok, a wishbone had been fitted fairly recently. wondering if its an anti-roll bar joint/link? [ Edited Wed Apr 13 2005, 05:37PM ]

oil leak suspect timing chain cover
silverline replied to silverline's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
cheers for the advice, will keep it in mind. i did check the cam cover and im pretty sure its not coming from there. cant be too sure untill i take the manifold off. anothing thing...the exhaust seems to "burble" more than usual when the engines reved. i can hear a slight rasp as tho theres a small hole in the exhaust, near the cat. its running rough as well. would the exhaust blow cause it to burble and run rougher? theres oil leaking on to the coil pack and its over the housing that covers the timing chains and its running onto the bell housing and sump etc so its fairly bad! i was going to take the housing that covers the chains off as i think its leaking from there, im guessing there should be a gasket on there to seal it all? is this a major job ie taking the inlet manifold off, dismantling the housing etc? the cars going on the rollers next week and i dont really want it pumping oil all over the operators rolling road so hoping to do it over the weekend. appreciate any help.

i ve sent you the video clip to your email address.

on the A148 theres 2 roundabouts with a nice straight between them about a mile 1/2 long, the guy i know who had the lotus carlton said he came off 1 managed to get 170mph out of it and slow down for the next!!
-
eat this do you know if it will work if i pm'd it to you?
-
lol i agree with that! for a car that weighs nearly 2 tons and with the aerodynamics of a wardrobe 187mph aint bad, plus a sub 6sec 0-60 time as well!!
-
theres a place called KTF Fastparts in norwich who are bosch agents, cant guarantee they're the cheapest but i had a peugeot gti and got some bosch units from them and they were quite reasonable. their number is: 01603 486020

http://www.lotus-carlton.fsnet.co.uk/Top10.htm thats quite interesting. dont know about the lotus carlton but the GSi3000 is so cheap to insure, as are most vauxhalls. still a barge tho!!
-
what? your right when you say "Weirdo"! even if the video is sped up theres no denying that the golf is beating all those cars! i show it to a mate and he thinks the shots of the cars on the straight are sped up but the rest is real time.
-
i could be wrong but the scooby has Nos as well?! when they get on the straight there's a puff of white smoke from the scooby, a shot of Nos would emit white smoke wouldn't it? unless he's popped the headgasket or something!?

Quote: "The performance of these cars is quite literally breathtaking. It has made me almost have to change my pants when from a T-junction (even in the dry) the back end has stepped out and even spun the wheels in second gear! It boasts 204bhp standard and a top speed of almost 150mph!" thats a quote from a car suvrey website on the GSi! no wonder i couldnt lose him!!!
-
if it was a lotus carlton i would of just let him past! i wouldnt even bother trying. i know some1 who used to have 1, they were the fastest production car in their day, apparently people who bought them had to go on a special course coz they are so ruthless! yeah it was a GSi 3000 no way i could of lost it not with a stock VR6. what if i had a superchip installed? would that even things up?
