  1. Sounds like the camber is out to me. Are you sure the garage definitely checked the Camber? When I got mine done I was suprised how many garages didn't seem to understand what I wanted doing when I asked for Camber alignment!!! Lots of places will just do the tracking. It will pull all over the place is the camber is out, espcially if its not even on both side of the car. Also when I when I got my Camber set the guy said tyres can have an effect on the pull. I swaped back to front and the pulling went away!
  2. I was going to go for 215/40/16 when I first got my 16" alloys as that is the size listed on the fuel cover (lists the tyre pressure for that size tyre and the normal 205/50/15s). But after getting advise the norm seemed to be 205/45/16 so I went for that.

  4. James, I'm certainly not as knowledgeable as some as the others that have replied to this link but I have fitted the Neuspeed ARBs to my car with standard suspension set-up. They made a big improvement! I fitted 25mm on front & at the advice of Awesome GTI went for a 25 on the rear as well (they advised that the 28 is just too much). I thought exactly the same about the handling of the car as you mentioned early on in this link.   5. I put the arbs on when it was still on standard suspension set up and they made a load of difference, but yet don't the the comfort remains. I would definitely recommend them to anybody. I went for the Neuspeed after reading lots of threads on this web page. One of the main advantages that I was told about was the heavy duty front drop links that are supplied with the Neuspeed, but not the Eibach. When they arrived I found there weren't any drop links supplied. After much chasing I found that Neuspeed do make drop links but NOT for the VR6, which are a different style to to the rest of the gol
  6. I've got a paper copy, but no scanner, so I can't send it directly to you. I got mine from my local VW supplier when I was figuring out which parts to replace when I did my suspension. For a 1997 they go together in the following order. Shock Bump Stop Protection boot Spring Sping disk - Part no. 357 421 341 A Axial grooved ball bearing - Part No. IJ0 412 249 Threaded bush - Part No. 1H0 412 365 A Suspension strut storage (The big lump of rubber - top mount) - Part No. 357 412 331 A All that goes under your arch then fit the dished cup and nut to the top.   7. I need to change the suspension bushes on both the front and rear. Just wanting to gain your knowledge on the different types. Is it just a choice of O.E. or Poly? Do the poly ones make the ride harsher? I have the Gmax suspension kit (springs and shocks) and Neuspeed Arbs I can cope with the current level of comfort but don't want to loose any more. Whats your thoughts?
  8. I had the same thing when mine was MOT'd last September. I nipped the bearing and it was ok for a while but the play soon comes back again. I replaced both rear bearings about a month ago. Like Sanky says you have to remove the disk in order to be able to replace the bearings and the shells but if your disks are ok you don't need to replace them.
  9. Putting my Gmax kit on tomorrow and just wanted a quick sanity check on cutting the bump stops down! The kit says to cut an minimum of 20mm off. I take it I just cut that off the TOP of the bumpstop!?! Cheers

  12. You may already know that if you want to replace your rear disks you need a special tool to wind the caliper pot back in. Apprently you can buy these from Halfords - don't know how much they are? Anyway I figured out a great alternative when I did mine at the weekend - But you have to have a 4 1/2 inch angle grinder (or know somebody who has one). The tool that you use to change the blade on them fits perfectly
  13. As ferrariVR6 said, we have done a comparison and got that the GMAX kit gives a 40mm drop. I've been looking for a set-up that gives exactly what FerrariVR6 describes, not the ultimate in handling, but a big improvement over the OEM, whilst still retaining the OEM comfort, (cos I use the car everyday and I do a fair bit of trecking around in it - esp over to Huddersfield where the folkes are and the roads round there are dia!).   14. Hobbsy, Got the same alloys as your talking about fitted with 205/45's and there fine. I agree with everybody else, 195's would be too narrow. My car isn't lowered though (yet) so I can't pass opinion on that. TBH I'm supprised the Mk4 wheel size of 205/55 hasn't been giving you problems with rubbing - they are huge!!!! They'll slow down the acceleration as well.
  15. Yes they are a legal requirement. Doubt the police will stop you but if the MOT guy does his job right he won't pass it without them. I had a old E reg Polo which had the wings replaced by the previous owner but he didn't put the side repeaters on. When I took it for the MOT he wouldn't pass it until they were re-installed.

  17. Going to put some loweing springs on and had decided to go for the Eibachs but then H&R's have been suggested to me. Anybody got any opinion on which I should go for? Both say they drop by approx 30mm Both are about the £130 ish mark (give or take £10) the H&R usually seem a bit more then the Eibach.

Changed mine when I bought the car - Found there was very little in it - Which was really bad !! especially seeing as it had had it's 40K service 3k prior to me buying it - they are supposed to check the gear box level on that one!!! Did my research and bought 75W90 Demon Tweeks product code for the MT90 is REDMT90Q - you need 2 of these (US quart each) I also added some ZX1 - addative (not like those shitty PTFE based addatives that gum everything up)

  20. Looking to do something with my suspension!!! Currently on standard springs/shocks, but fitted Neuspeed ARB's. Main trouble is the Back is sitting very low, almost looks like it has been dropped by 40mm! Awsome GTi says it is very common for the springs to sag (Mine is a 1997 with 51k). Anyhow been looking at loads of other threads and it seems to be a very mixed bag of opinions of what to go for Eibach springs with koni dampers (is SSK just a type/model of koni damper??) Got the new Toyo T1-Rs on mine (new replacement for the T1-S) paid £79 a corner (fitted, balanced, new valves) They are a very similar to the T1-S, but have a band running round the edge of the tyre. This is supposed to stiffen the tyre to improve cornering. I think you would notice this more on deeper profile tyres like 50 & 55's. I like them a lot, very progressive in all conditions if you ask me! Michelin Pilot SX's were on the car when I bought it and the T1-R's are a massive improvement.   22. Just going to change my oil, so I'm glad I found this thread! Went into Halfords and on their chart it says to use 15/40. I have only done one previous oil change on this car and from the info I had at the time (from Demon Tweeks) was to use 10/40. Just spoke to the VW dealer in Macclesfield and they also said 15/40. Mine has run fine on the 10/40 Castrol Magnatec, same grade as the synta silver. I would agree with most of you that 5/40 (synta gold) is too thin.
  23. Rob, I have a removal Bosal towbar on mine. As you say you have to cut a square in the lower part of the bumper. VW do a STANDARD part that you can get to clip back into the hole, very much in the same way the one for the tow eye does. When the cover is in place you don't really notice it. I think it was about £15 - which is a lot for a bit of plastic, but it does the job. The part is obviously moulded so that it fit's the shape of the bumper perfectly. Obviously you need the cover before you cut the hole so that you cut it to exactly the right size. I'm not in my car today but when I get home
  24. Right then! Spoke to Awesome again.........and Neuspeed definitely DO NOT sell the links to suit a VR6. So Jim was wrong & I now have to return these ones that they previously sent me. Still didn't get the feeling that they were 100% correct. I might try to get hold of Neuspeed directly. They make links for the GTI as they come with the GTI bar (22mm). Does anybody know if these are different to the links used ona VR6? Has anyone got a GTI and a VR6 that they can put next to each other and have a quick look?
