Buying a used Jetta III GLX VR6
acf8181 replied to BizMan's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
main thing is the timing chains...they usually need replacing at about that mileage as the top runner wears through (which would cause the chain to jump and damage valves). other than, if its been looked after it'll go a lot longer that 120k no probs. -
its not the probs i've had with it that are dirivng me away....its the fact that i finally got it to handle but that has ruined the ride. so i wanted a standard car with good handling.....only fwd (for the money) i could think of was the pug 306 gti-6, but i couldn't live with the build quality. rwd is more fun anyway, and the mr2 is a very nice car IMO so its the obvious choice. am a tad apprehensive as i've never driven mid engine on the road before (apart form a few test drives), and i know from track use they need serious respect or they can catch even experienced guys out...but i'll build

ur new car wouldnt happen to rhime with scooby doo would it??? 'fraid not...although i could possibly afford an older scoob the running costs are just too much at the mo. one day though. what i'm getting will be rwd, only have two seats, and be jap. but have no fear, i will stick around on the site and only be a PM away from advice.

[moved] [moved] new brake system!
acf8181 replied to VRmonster's topic in Wheels, Brakes, Suspension and Steering
well....the servo doesnt actually effect stopping power....it just means you have to press the pedal harder (servo is like pas for brakes). -
well...i may as well tell everyone now...but i'm leaving the club within the next month or so. the vr6 will be sold (it will be runnning perfectly when its sold as well...someone will get a well sorted car).
-
yep....dealer service history won't add value to the car anymore (its too old now). in fact, enthusiasts will prefer a specialist...so make sure he stamps the book.

any advice B4 i get standard setup
acf8181 replied to ste-vr6's topic in Wheels, Brakes, Suspension and Steering
oh, no, i just remembered...the test i had was of the gti. the vr6 article was for the vento cup racers (which were pretty standard actually). i'll scan it in at some point in the near future. -

i've got one in a mag from '92...and they didnt even mention it!!! but then again, all cars had awful susp back then. -

automotive solutions (01189 699903) in sonning (just of a4 between reading and maidenhead) are very very good and cost effective.....the only prob is the boss, tony, has just broke his neck in a racing accident and is in hospital. he'll be ok, but he's the guy you'd really want to do the work. worth talking to his colleagues though.

any advice B4 i get standard setup
acf8181 replied to ste-vr6's topic in Wheels, Brakes, Suspension and Steering
yeah, i suppose thinking back its more like 60mph....its totally uncontrolable at 80mph on twisty roads (you have to guess where the cars gonna end up! lol) -

acf8181 replied to VRmonster's topic in Wheels, Brakes, Suspension and Steering
yeah, you really should have done some of the work yourself....changing claipers/discs/pads is a piece of piss. also, prob not what you wannt hear, but 288mm go under 15" wheels perfectly, and the parts cost the same amount. still, on the up side at least it should stop very very well. -

acf8181 replied to ste-vr6's topic in Wheels, Brakes, Suspension and Steering
yeah, try 15"s first (have a set of solitudes spare if you wana buy them ) if its still too harsh i dont know what to suggest. maybe gmax springs on new o.e. dampers with eibach arbs? standard front srpings are just too soft, they make the car really vague over 80mph) -
kent, just off the m25. i'd be up for a meet, but you'll have to wait till i have some cash. i havent been karting in 18 months, so will be very rusty....but lightweigh people (such as myself) can gain a huge advantage up the hill...though if its wet heavy people have more grip.

Bit noisy on cold start up
acf8181 replied to stevietots1's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
all vr6's rattle from cold...it just depends on how bad it is, if it clears within a few secs i wouldn't worry too much. thing to consider is if the timing chains are getting worn (whats your mileage? and have they already been done?) -
only criticism i have of buckmore is that the track is a bit chopped up, so in the wet you have loads of grip one sec then suddenly get mega out of shape on the straight! lol is a very techincally challenging track actually.

polyurethane bushes
acf8181 replied to scoobysmiff's topic in Wheels, Brakes, Suspension and Steering
they do affect the ride quality on vr6's...i have powerflex on mine. to be honest i'd go for new o.e. ones if i did it again(easiest to just get new wishbones on front as they come with them fitted), though the rear o.e. ones need special tools. -
a friend had this happen to her driver and it was the fuel pump.
-
ooops...forgot that you have to remove the sprokets (and be very careful with the hall sender bits as they damage easily)
-
sounds like a snapped anti roll bar link to me....i broke both mine within a month of owning my vr6. very pricey from vw, i got donated some gsf ones from a mate and didnt think they'd last but they have so far!
-
always best to have a manual, and the bentley is worth every penny. you gotta use the correct torques and procedure when bolting it back on. basically though.... remove... leads/coilpack/lead guides/cam cover/aux water pump/upper inlet manifold/timing chain 'bolt' tensioner/top chain cover/top chain runner that is attached to head(important or you'll snap it when you put head down on bench - thats what i did!), undo exhaust manidolf to downpipe, undo head bolts, remove.
-
could well be that a wheel has been scrubbing it...seen that happen on mkII's before. think it'll be a right pita to change. good luck.
-
sorry....been in hospital so obviously couldnt reply! are the sprokets the same part no (on yours and on a coilpack car)? if so, all you'll need is the sensor bits and pieces. if they're different no's then you'll need the sprokets as well.

thats a rip off for crappy indoor karting tbh! go to buckmore park - www.buckmore.co.uk - the karts are twice as fast (theire 'thunderkarts' are serious bits of kit), the track is awesome and out door. best thing to do is just do a practice session and go on lap times...fastest is the winner, simple as that. think that they're grand prix events are similar cost to the indoor track actually.
