  1. i had a new shape punto before the vr6...big mistake....3 gearboxes in as many years (and i'm fairly light on lcars). interior build quality was fine though, and nothing else ever broke....if i ignore the brakes failing cause i was too lazy to replace tottally worn out brake shoes (my fault totally)
  2. thats european and us 'rados only....uk box is same ratios as golf. heres a thought...has anyone ever thought of putting ;rado vr6 o.e. susp on the golf? would it fit? would it handle better? interesting.
  3. will have a try tomoz, cheers...you got a link?
  4. about £2500 i think, as standard (bits would add no value)...is in pretty damn good condition.
  5. prob cost very little to take the discs to a garage and get the bearins put in properly...thats what i'd do (though it'd be free as a mates a ford mechanic).
  6. to be totally honest, i'm not that horrified. when i bought mine highlines were £8k....i'm happier with what i got than a standard highline thats for sure. i will be removing the modded parts, which are worth about £700 second hand anyway. some people have spent a lot more than me.
  7. i blame my mate...he's spent £30k of elephants cash this year on claims (crashed an s3, repaired it, then wrote it off)! lol
  8. seeing as its about to go up for sale, thought i'd tidy up the receipts folder. vw receipts (mostly nuts and bolts as i'm so pedantic i replace any i remove! - but there is a set of gen leads in there as well) - £475.80 on garage bills/ecp/gsf/etc - £2375.76 and finally on uprated bits and bobs (so susp/recaros/VT mounts) - £1193.09 so total of £4005.65...so inc buying the car i've spent £7505.65 (better than some i suppise)
  9. thats debateable though....different people have different opinions on it. i still think thats too harsh, but others (like yourself i presume) like a firm ride. only thing to do is go for a ride in various equipt cars and make up your own mind.
  10. front is easy...same as every other car. rears you need a special tool to wind in the piston (it has to be tunred and pushes at same time, unlike fronts which just push in with a clamp)...£20 from halfords about. also, the bearings need pushing into disc, but i never done that so dont know specifics.
  11. remove ash tray and cig lighter, then slide panel that surround cig lighter to the right. same as that for all '94 on. '92 and '93 its behind the blanks where rear switches are (if 5dr or more blanks on 3dr), and is of the 2x2 type.
  12. i think its something with your PC most likely, maybe a codec needs downloading. you'll have to ask a computer geek the corner he went of at, schweidenkreuz is one of the most dangerous....scares the crap out of me. i did one lap as you know, in the wet, and i pootled through there and even then the steering went mega light and i was expecting the rear to step out which thankfully it didnt...i kept my foot hard in in case mind (fwd). thing is though, if you have a moment there you can still be in trouble if you recover it as you have to brake hard for the aremberg hairpin which follows. i've
  13. just thought i'd pass this on. i bought one of these, and i have to say i'm very impressed. http://www.gendan.co.uk/viewproduct.php?product=CREADVAG bit cheaper than getting a lap top, then two cables (as i have older 2x2 connector). be aware its not suitable for use on newer mkIV golfs.
  14. yep, shoudl be pretty much plug and play....however, airbag light will be on all the time (possible mot failure - though my other halfs polo passed with light on). you can get a resisiter or something to stop it apparately.
  15. the reason is....the golf vr6 was designed as a autbahn cruiser, the 'rado vr6 as a sport coupe. so the emphasis was on ride quality on the golf, and driving enjoyment on the 'rado. from what i hear, a vr with a susp kit handles very similar to a standard 'rado....however, this comes at the cost of ride quality. i can tell you that my vr6 handles incredibly, but does not ride bumps well at all....its on bilstein sprintline. reason i went for the golf was the interior space and moderness....'rado feels more like mkII to me. oh...and i couldn't quite stretch to a 'rado vr (could only get sheddy
  16. yeah, i've done an online quote for the '2' and its almost identical...however, i had a prob with their site earlier in the week (i tried to select guarateed ncd which i cant get and it froze) and when i e-mailed them to retrieve the quote they came back saying it was now £680! (it had been £440 with prtected ncd a second before it froze). so i'm worried that if i went to swap the policy from the vr to it (which you have to phone up to do) they'd want a premium based on £680. see what i mean?
  17. scary stuff, but a good warning to be careful...and for me to be careful when i own one! right click, save as
  18. HIC are £750....they do have good cover tho (trackday, free mods, drive other cars, etc) have just got a new quote at £430 from admiral (same details as the £460 quote they did!)...prob is i am planning on gettin an mr2 very soon. the premium is identical pretty much, but i'm scared that if i renew on the vr, then go to swap it to the '2' they will bump it up. think i need rid of the vr right now.
  19. well, you gotta say that the chains are likely to be up for renewal (or more specifically the top runner). however, its a late car with the single row chain, so its less likely to be an issue. if i were you i'd report back to the owner that it'll be the timing chains needing replacing, and say that it costs £600 to do, and try and knock the price down that amount. then when you get the car, immediately get them checked and replaced if needed.
  20. this is a fu**in joke. have 6 years ncd, no claims, no points, 24yr old, vr6.... last year paid £550FC, renewal comes through as £650ish. changed the mileage limit down to 5k (i dont do many) and it goes up to £690. its doing my head in, i feel i shoudl at least get a reasonable drop as it fairly obvious i aint that much of a risk. this is elephant by the way. admiral have given me quotes in the high £400 range...and they're the same bloody company! every else wants £1k....i paid that two years ago on the vr. i did phone sky, who were very professional, but were quoting £1k.
  21. thats the earlier version (mkI and rev1 mkII), i getting a later one (mkII rev2 or 3)....still oversteery of course!
  22. where you based? i have diagnostics, we just worked out why fabio's light was coming on...was the brake pedal position sensor.
