  1. update...after saying i was going to leave it for the weekend black hammerite smooth on the metal parts after a wire brush to remove the flaky rust but leave a surface to bond to. on the inner plastic arches i used a product called Back for good, quality plastic trim restorer and leaves a lasting finish also....bit of a 50/50 photo to show the effect. http://s1060.photobucket.com/user/jamesw68101/library/ will look smoother when dry, photos taken directly after i painted it so looks a bit rough and wet at the minute

  3. Another update, as you probably noticed went with the glass from the GL tailgate, ummed and arred for ages because I wanted the oe look but I just didn't like it, so no spoiler; Also got a top tinted front screen as it was only a few quid extra, so I thought why not; Then got the xenons wired in as neat as possible, all hidden whilst the bumpers off and got the side markers wired in,not the neatest I must admit but it works; Tried the US rear bumper on and it fits spot on; So got it prepped,it was a fully painted bumper but the top had been painted black at some point and it'd had a crap

Cheers mate, yeah when I do a restoration or 'clean up' it is one of the first places I hit - it's amazing how much dirt and muck can find it's way into areas!

  7. Yeah can't see why that wouldn't work, if you want to try and hold the rust back a bit longer it might be worth treating with something like jenolite first, used it on a few things and it works really well. Good to see someone else giving an old vr a bit of love! Keep it up mate!

  12. Remembered to take a few more pics of the progress today and also remembered when putting the skirts on that it had these protective strips along the top of the side skirt into the door shut; It was bugging me so tried TPS but they're obselete... Well it was worth a try! So straight on eBay and found this stuff anti slip waterproof tape for boats, skin friendly apparently! Worth a try so ordered some it was only cheap, cut a bit to size warmed it up as it's quite thick stuck it on and I think it looks ok; Aerial was looking a bit sorry for itself; So a new seal and a bit of matt black aerosol

I had a spare hour yesterday so I started tidying my garage ready for my re-fit plans, and had another good look over the Golf. Really suprised at the bodywork - it's really in better condition than i thought. Here are a few more pictures: All pretty solid here Strut tops are also very good Battery tray needs a quick going over, but solid all around Brand new alternator and aircon compressor Tiny leak on the side of the head i need to address but nothing bad Valve looks a bit oily mind - will be replacing it
