Your only down the road from me I guess. Once you've conquered the 50mph zones on the M6 your there in no time.
I'm probably gonna organise another soon and more Northern. Maybe at Awesome GTI so that would be local for you

    Good Morning Everybody,

    I'm a new member from New Malden Surrey. I own a mk5 golf R32
I used to own a mk4 gti turbo and before that a mk3 gti colour concept
I'm currently in charge of organising monthly local meets in New Malden for the London/ Surrey Members of the R32 Owners Club (r32oc.com) as a huge fan of all things VW and being that the vr6 is the daddy of R32's I thought I'd join here and see if any of you guys fancied popping down to our meets.
I will be posting a thread for it in the meet section every month so please check it out and if local pop down

    Chris

A little update to this after nearly 3 years of taking it easy on the slightly iffy clutch, one of the reasons I got it so cheap but changing the bushes on the pedal made it a lot better and 2 years of having a gearbox fitted with a Quaife diff lying around in my shed I finally gave in and got a new clutch and the other box into the car. I cleaned painted and changed all of the seals on it a while ago, Then decided to just get it done on the drive as I'd be waiting forever to get a spare ramp at work and I hate being there when I don't have to beSome shiny new parts, Got this one to try to help me but he was as much use as an ashtray on a motorbike when it came to lifting the gearbox back in!! Then after finally getting the box back in for the 2nd time don't ask! On the Saturday afternoon before the VR6oc rolling road day on the Sunday it all worked!! She drove perfectly on the way to Stealth on the Sunday morning, a nice clear A14 on a nice bright morning ; She ran a slightly disappointing 279bhp due to some belt slip, but good to know there's a bit more in her! Was really stoked to pick up Mod's car of the day! So nice to get some recognition for the car after all the hours I've put into it. Especially after originally buying it as a spares or repairs slightly rough old thing from eBay! Thanks guys!!
Then today over 2 years of driving the VR and with missus only ever being in the car once since being back on the road after the repaint and me getting it stuck on a slight raised row of cobbles backing out of the inlaws driveway when she did finally come in it! I persuaded her to come with me to the Autofinesse Show & Shine which was conveniently only 10 mins from where we live and in a lovely old pub in a pretty village, I turned up a bit late and because we'd brought the little one with us had to leave early, but as I went to make a move I was asked to wait for 10 minutes and to my and the other halfs surprise (she just doesn't get it!) I'd won something! Which happened to be 1st place!! Won't need to buy any cleaning gear for a while now!!

It's defiantly worth servicing the haldex mate.. I'm way over the top with mine as I change bothe oil & filter every 10k or 12mth which every comes sooner. Anyway the usual is oil every 20 & both every 40k.
I've adapted my filling point with a custom snap fix set up, makes life so much easier & dont spill a drop??

Thanks for such a descriptive reply,
That has set my mind at ease . I have had my 4motion for 6 months now and am learning new things everyday about it which is good as its quite complex for a hot hatch. I didn't realise it was a VVT till now either. I had a couple of fast cars before I had kids, my last car however was an astra 1.4 ,it was a good drop in performance from my 200sx that's for sure but to jump into the Golf after that made me feel happy once more and there's still room for the kids :D.I work at a motor factors in Mid-wales so it will get regular oil changes and any parts it will need. Am also starting to save cash back for a dual mass and clutch, its ok atm but always best to be prepared. Haldex oil and filter also will be changed as not sure if its ever been done!!.

Hey fella I really wouldn't worry too much as there's a lot people being way overzealous on this subject...
There's also a whole lot of misinterpreted information on the technicalities of the infamous vr6 timing chains i.e. Stretching! 1st of all chains do not stretch... This is a myth, however they can & do wear out, the way in which a chain wears is in the side to side movement of each link. The parts that tend to wear out in the motor are the guilds & tensioners causing the chains to become slacker which can eventually effect the timing, especially on the 24valvers due to them having VVT (variable valve timing). Worse case scenario of worn guilds tensioners & chains, is that the slackness can eventually cause the chain to jump a tooth or even snap a chain, but this is generally on a badly maintained motor with extremely high milage and is very rare!
The tensioners on the very early 12valver VR6's were made of lesser quality to those of later models & have been know to fall apart on high milage motors with again... Poor service history!
Having said all of this, I did change the timing components on my 4motion 24v only because I had the box off to change the clutch & flywheel, so then I thought fuck it and took the motor out aswel. Anyway once I stripped it all down, there was defiantly some wear on all the timing components but nothing detrimental, bearing in mind it this motor had 157,000miles on her, she'd probably gone on to do another 100,000 easily however, after I rebuilt it all there was a notable increase of performance, nothing massive but definitely better, it just feels tighter & more responsive. The timing checks via vag-com were also improved from -7 & -9 to -1 & -2. Once again though too many guys get scared when this test result shows their timing to be slightly outside of tolerances as were mine! This test/check with VCDS (vag-com) shows a result which translates to a measurement of microns.. Which is minuscule and its this result that can give you an idea of the wear in the guides & tensioners..
Hear are some pics of the timing components I changed on my motor..
So conclusion... If your motor is running sweet with no alarming noises or performance (especially with your milage) I wouldn't worry at all mate. She'll probably go on for another 100k, just keep up good services with quality oils/parts and maybe increase your service intervals.. I do mine every 6mths or 5000miles but that's because I'm a bit anal haha.

You'll need to get the lower grilles as they're a slightly different shape to euro spec. Also, if you want, you could get the us indicators, they clip straight in as opposed to the euro spec ones have to be screwed into the bumper. Beware, the rear number plate tubs are plastic and can be very brittle. My mountings fell to bits when the bootlid was stripped for paint prep, fortunately, Bennyk is a bit of a whizz when it comes to repairing stuff. Unless you want to delock the boot, make sure the you receive that part too, it's very easy to change the lock tumblers over so your key works.
I'm not 100% on the front splitter but I have the US one fitted. Don't expect that to be mint though, they all seem a little battered and bruised.
