  1. Motorway all the way, usually I am chasing in the outside lane but that is in a company car, my car I would probably sit at 70-75, as long as I don't plant it in a wall at the track day I will probably go.
  2. not too bad then Pete, I might just do this, track day on October 8th so will make my decision after that.
  3. Slightly off topic question if I may? I am new to the V6 world of cars and have had diesel cars for many years, as my V6 4 Motion is now legal and roadworthy, I am wondering what sort of MPG I will get on a good run, i.e. from my house to Brooklands and back, just over 400 miles, is this achievable on one tank of juice or will it be one there and one back? Thanks and I hope to be there.
  4. MOT passed with a few advisories, headlights were slightly out of line and the air bag light does not come on with the ignition lights and it should apparently. So with this in mind and the car now road legal, I might even venture to Brooklands....
  5. Give the car a wash and a polish today before the MOT again on Monday, I used a machine polisher as there are some big marks on the bonnet, I didn't get a good result as I think I was doing it wrong (first time with a machine polisher), anyway, this got me thinking about wrapping it, then I saw a youtube clip where they Plasti Dipped an R8, looked really good and can be restored back to how it was if the need ever arose. Has anybody on here have any experience of Plasti Dip? Or know of anywhere that would spray my car with it? Here is my car today, washed and sitting on the GAZ coil overs.
  6. I have just replaced all the springs on my MK iv 4 motion, I replaced stock with GAZ coilovers, to be honest I was surprised that the car did not hit the deck as the front struts were 30mm shorter and then they can be wound down, however it too is sitting high as was the rear. Today, I have undone and re tightened the rear suspension arms this made the rear sit down better, the fronts I have just driven along a rough'ish piece of road and this seems to have done the trick, must have just bedded everything down as I fitted new top mounts also. Out of interest, I now have a set of front struts
  7. A few more jobs done on the Golf, I had some error codes that would not go away, implausible signals and low voltage, so I had a good rummage about with a few things and eventually the alternator threw a light up on the dash, obviously knackered, so a new one has been fitted, now hopefully I will be trouble free for a day or two. Alternator replacement on the V6 is an absolute pig of a job, front end off and you need hands like a child to get in to undo anything! I have also fitted my GAZ shocks and springs, here are a few pics just as it touched the floor after fitting, along with the Eiba
  8. suspension and ARB's are now on, I had to shorten the front drop links as the ARB was touching the front wishbones for some reason. I haven't set it super low but low enough, damping is very good and the ride is firm but not bouncy on bumps from what I can tell on my short test drive. I have also replaced a Lambda sensor as it was throwing a light on the dash. You have guessed it, it was a pre cat bank one sensor, the one that is most difficult to get to, it was a pig of a job to do but all is sorted now and I have a warning light free dash, hooray (for now anyway)
  9. Thanks for the information, I am hoping to add the turbo bits over winter to my MK 4, I have most of it just need a spacer, although I have been told 6-7 psi is ok to run without dropping compression, so I might try this first. Then progress to head off and boost increase, injectors etc.
  10. Interesting read mate, I see you are running the standard inlet manifold which I think is plastic, also turbo charged, I didn't see a head spacer for compression dropping so I can only assume you are running low pressure boost from the turbo, out of interest what psi are you running and what HP increase do you think you have achieved?
  11. I have a 2002 4 motion MK 4, when I got it there was an issue with the rear diff/haldex, it presented by making a horrible grinding noise when driving and eating tyres. I have since changed the whole diff/haldex with a donor from an S3. I then set about dismantling the rear diff and cleaning it up to see why it was locking and being generally noisy. When I got it to pieces and clean I was surprised to see everything in decent condition and looking quite healthy, the only thing I can see/feel being a bit rough are the two bearings on the diff shaft. So, does anybody know where I can get the
  12. I also thought stacking is a bit suspect, I will be buying a spacer, now, not wanting to sound dim, do I go for 9:1 or 8.5:1 or 8:1 I have no intention of replacing the bottom end on my 24 valve 2.8 and I am not looking for insane BHP, just 400 bhp, this is my target and I have a budget to get it there. So what compression ratio will i need, why and how do you work it out? Thanks for your help
  13. How much for them? UM I will be on the look out for one over winter, has anybody "stacked" standard head gaskets?
  14. Ebay is your friend for a head spacer or you can stack head gaskets I believe but have never done it. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VR6-MLS-Compression-Dropping-Headgasket-Decompression-VW-Turbo-Golf-mk2-mk3-mk4-/170798607363?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item27c463ec03
  15. I will take some on saturday as it is all in boxes waiting for the dark winter nights to tackle that job, will be doing a track day at Oulton Park on the 8th October and then after that the work will begin
  16. Saturday is the day, I will be fitting the ARB's, the GAZ shocks, the lateral sensor, pads and discs to front and rears, changing the brake fluid, fitting the fuel vapour canister and any other bits I have accumulated. Then MOT will be next week! Only problem I have is that I will be working over a pit and not on the two post lift which would make things a tad easier, photos will follow over the weekend amongst repairs and the Oulton Park Gold Cup on Sunday and Monday.
  17. Might also want to have a look on this website too, useful stuff http://www.troublecodes.net/VW/

  19. I used Yellow stuff pads, they were good imo, I have done three track days and one how fast at Bedford, pads were good, I used them in combination with standard discs and my braking point was a lot later than some of the other same cars on different pads. I have bought Ferodo DS 2500 to go on the Golf, these were twice the price of Yellow stuff but I really can't see them being twice the pad....
  20. I have worked through about 8 VCDS faults so far on my MK 4, but hopefully when it is done it will behave for a week or two.. Only issue I have now is a Lambda being a bit iffy but only when cold, so a good thrash might sort it out.
  21. There are two sensors, one left and one right, they are identical just fitted differently, it has an arrow on it and on the drivers side the arrow points front to back and the left side one fits so the arrow points left to right. They are behind the dash and you need to remove the glove box and the lower dash on the drivers side. Sensor is about £170 off VW but I got mine off ebay, same as a TT, or Leon or MK iv Golf etc it was £40 delivered. Ideally you could do with VCDS to test, simply disconnect one of the sensors and if no errors show up you have disconnected the dodgy sensor, if you
  22. Anybody going to Castle Coombe on the 14th September for the action day? Another show at another race venue but you don't have to race as there are a few comps for polishing and cleaning etc. Hope to see a few of you there.
  23. ESP light will be the lateral sensor behind the dash, this tells the car if you are braking, accelerating or going left and right. here is a link to the offending item, http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5450/9256143462_606a153873_b.jpg
  24. I went for GAZ as they are a bit different, not the usual recommended coilovers, I also went with GAZ as they will happily answer the phone and will also help should I need it, they will also repair or replace just one item if I ever need it. I will post up what I think about them once fitted, my comparison will be against Eibach Street Pro's which are on a MK ii G60.
  25. you certainly have bought yourself a challenge! Good luck with it matey. Not sure where you are but Chadwick's in Bretton (near Chester) have V6 4 motion breaking, interior has gone but all engine parts and even the 312 brakes are still on it, you might get a bit of what you need from it?
