how much are you spending? its all about money.
    cheap
Audi 1.8T Air intake temp sensor (standard is in block and gets heat soaked) rewire to cooler area maybe inside airbox?
airbox mod -  drill huge holes or cut the bottom of the air box out
DIY port head and throttle body
    panel filter

    medium 250-1000
install  new cams 263's 267's etc
    ported and big valve head
3.67 final drive (no power but better gearing, would look to do diesel 5th gear for better cruising) also if gearbox is off lightweight flywheel and chains
    2nd hand charger?
    new or 2nd hand exhaust

    expensive £1000 up
super charger (easy to put back to original)
turbo (can be expensive but HUGE fun)
    r32/r36 engine swap

I sold my VR for 900 quid, that was after cams, chains, exhaust, leather interior, 3.68 FD and diesel 5th plus loads more, counting back best part of 5k over 6-7 years. The thing about S/C is you can run 10 psi with no mods and if/when you want to sell you get the S/C money back and standard VR cost. imho it's the best bang for buck. If you want to embarrass M3 and scooby mugs then it's turbo only way to go, but it's not easy to return to standard for the long term option. I can speak from experience that you will never recoup the money you spend! You can only try and claw some back when you sell.
i took the quick option and bought an ex mag featured Corrado, built for an ex donor card holder (biker) running 490bhp, when I got it it was detuned to 310 (Rolling roaded on the 310 map it was 260!) I told the tuner I wasn't  happy running more than 350 with the syncro drivetrain so he did me a 3 way switchable map, 260-280 and 340. I had it 3 months and destroyed the 6 speed box fitted (quaife gear set £3k to buy!) I am now going haldex (next year) to run rude power I'm looking for 450,550 and 650 on the maps this means changing to haldex 02m box, prop and rear diff and obviously more money!
If you look at the previous RR days a standard VR is out pulled by a 1.6 turbo fiesta ST, WTF! An SC will make it competitive but not a giant killer! sell the 2.8 lump drop an r32 in and charge that! Or R36! Otherwise keep it standard, accept that 18 yr old fiesta drivers on their mums insurance will slaughter you in the traffic light olympics and just enjoy the sound and a quiet missus.

Hi not huge power, was running standalone with 3 maps currently 260-280-340, the 340 destroyed a quaife 6 speed box! When it's haldex'd I'm looking for 450,550 and 650, Scirroco.com is the best for peloquin as he has direct contact with Gary (mr peloquin) the ricer boys and BM (BuM lovers?) really rate the m factory stuff and they are trying to break the VW market. http://www.grinspeed.co.uk/product-category/volkswagen/ seem to be the UK distributors and I believe the prices quoted are inc of vat as when you go to cart all they add is 9.99 postage, if that's right then it's 100 quid for bolt kit and away you go.
After speaking to Mart, the 02m is an arse to work on, blind bearings etc? No idea what they are but if a pro has issues with them.... Also the bearing rebuild kit is £300, would you want to fuck about with an essential bit of kit?
ive had to buy a 02C from Germany to get me by (£500) till next year, but I am still going to have diff bolts changed and also 2nd,3rd and 4th shot peened for strength. This makes the temp box well over a grand and possibly overkill but after speaking to Tim at the phirm he said straight swap and run low boost (never going to happen!) so I want the best of what I have. I am now used to the idea of money no object on these bloody cars! But it's great when a cayenne driver won't look at you after slaughtering him on a straight. Really interested in how your going to go, so please keep posting!

Hi, Vince at stealth racing does most on here, not sure what he charges now 350-400? If your going that route get all the mods you want done then get it mapped otherwise another mod = another visit = more money!
VRsuper did you go piggy back or map and tune? I would be surprised if you had it chipped at somewhere like stealth they would have let it go not working right?
im running standalone myself (emerald) and I like being able to fiddle and multiple maps but a good odb2 tuner should be able to do what's needed with a standard ecu, standalone is also cheaper to remap as its done by the hour (90 quid and safely running more boost locally, or 2 1/2 hour trip
to stealth) where as more boost or setup change would need at least 1/2 a day on dyno and reprogramming for an odb2 plus dependant on where you are in the country travel costs.
i spent upwards of 5k on my old VR and at best it ran 220hp and 205tq, check the boards on the latest RR day a Fabia diesel ran 230+ torque and quoting a sig here torque is what gets you through walls, while hp gets you to it.
if you love the car and the sound it makes spend the money, if you love speed get a different car it will be cheaper
    peace out.

Thanks for the gratuitous engine porn!
what you doing gearbox wise? I have read the 32 box can be a little weak when running big power.
    good luck

Ok, switching gears doesn't mean good clutch. From what your saying is you change gear the revs rise quicker than normal and you don't accelerate as quick as normal? If you weren't getting enough fuel your revs wouldn't rise at all and you would jerk and misfire?

Sounds like clutch mate, when it slips the revs go up but no or little power gets to the wheels.

hi, normal spacers i believe are just a cork head gasket split over a mk4 metal gasket so unless you start stacking them you wont get a thicker one which i cant see being a good idea? i think the skimming is done in thousandths of a mm as well so how much will a '000 mm affect compression, not a great deal as far as i can see.
when you say forged pistons do you mean low comp? if they are low comp then you wont need a spacer anyway.
what power do you want? i know people running with 300 charged with just a spacer and standard pistons and i think that most chargers run out of steam around that mark unless you go for tiny pulleys.
if your doing all that work dont forget the transmission!
    good luck

spoke to a guy here yesterday

to up-rate the shift forks, strengthen the input shaft add the shaft support, change some bearings but not including any synchros or gear replacements
£750 inc labour, which i didnt think was bad.
also getting a price from Mart (HotGolf) who is a legend, i will post that when it comes in as well.

Hi, got my 02M install booked in at the Phirm for next year. slightly different as mine is 4x4.
imho - i wouldnt waste the money strengthening the 02A not if your going 02M,
02A - LSD £650+, BOLT kit for diff £80, new bearings £100, plus the cost of the cryo and labour and good clutch 350+
build it, run low boost then convert to 02M after running it in.
02M swap needs the gearbox mount cut from subframe and moved.
