Can i just drop the front subframe?? will the gearbox come off completely, or just 6" or so. Any info on this would be appreciated. regards.

To bleed the older style tensioner, insert a thing wire into the bleed hole in the end of the plunger to activate the check valve inside and then press down on the plunger to compress it fully. Some people like to extend the tensioner slightly so that there is some tension on the upper chain when the engine is started the first time. If you want to do this, submerge the tensioner in oil and pull out on the plunger. Doing so with the tensioner submerged will ensure that oil and not air fills the tensioner. Make sure you do not extend the tensioner too far or too much tension may be applied to t

Some of these bolts you have to relieve pressure from the piston in the bolt. Have you done this?

Whirring Noise when cold..what causes it?

I have been thinking about this recently, milk float is a perfect description. -
im pretty sure you need to change the cam sprockets too. or at least put the back sprocket from the coilpack engine on the one you wish to use. also like you dsay, the upper timing chain cover will need to be changed, as will the egine wiring loom.

hey i done the search a few times, i hve found the answrs regarding the head bolts, but im stuck on the permatex, i can get hold of a loctite copper gasket spray, that has the same heat rating as the permatex, so would this be ok? want to get this head on today, its my only real chane.

i have the sheet about the head studs, just feel rather wary about the whole ordeal as i want it to be right. just the spray i need to know about, i can get hold of some loc-tite copper gasket spray, will that be ok??

Hey there, sorry for such a abrupt post, but im about to put my cylinder head back on and have two questions, first is the arp studs, what are the torque settings for the nuts, i have been informed i should go with 85, but as this is the first time doing any thing like this i just want to clear it in my head. And then also what about the studs them selfs, how tight should i go with these? no locktight required I hope/imagine? when putting a new head gasket on is permatex copper gasket spray neccersary? could i use the loctite version of copper gasket spray? it thas all the same heat specs etc

Cheers. I will go and get the power steering pump/alternator bracket polished tomo, and get the a/c bracket in sometime soon. Can't wait for the finished product and to have a crisp turbo lump in my baby.

hey, sorry for two threads, but i thought it would address it better. i am currently building up a engine to replace the one that i scurrently sitting in my car. The thing is is i have air con in my car at the moment, but the engine i am building up is from a 1993 golf, so i would imagine it doesnt. i am hoping and would imagine that the blocks from a air con model and no air con model are exactly the same, but needed to double check. The last thing is that i am off to my polishers tomo to have all my brackets polished up, is the air con bracket seperate to the alternator/power steering brac

I have a few questions tho and was hoping someone could help me out. first is at the top of cylinders 2,3,4 and 5 is soot (would imagine its there in one and six also but as the engine is a tdc i cant really see), also a slight ring arountd the top of each cylinder where the head gasket is. should i remove this all before putting together or not? and if i do, what should i use?
