  1. If you can get it cheap enough, it's worth getting the engine stripped and rebuilt, or a full replacement engine fitted by one of these tuning companies. I'd have thought you could also use a 2.8 block if needed and get it bored out to the right amount. (Or even use the 2.8)
  2. The answer is: They were morons before it rained, the rain just highlights the level of stupidity more than normal.
  3. i assure u it does iv done it get to a ton drop it out of gear then reset the trip Yeah it would work. The engine still uses fuel on idle, but it's a tiny amount in comparison to the speed and distance covered. So "idle amount of fuel" divided by "distance covered freewheeling" = 99.9mpg (It's more than this, that's all the display is capable of shing though). Looks like my daily run to work is going to average out my consumption at 32mpg. That's pretty good and only 1mpg less than my 2.0 lightweight Volvo 480.
  4. It's a popular and pretty awesome motor tbh. I was almost tempted myself. The VR6 torque for everyday won me over. Checkout all the styling options available for it though, wow!
  5. I think it's more likely to be the time of year, the relative humidity level is pretty high in the UK at the moment. As we get into autumn it gets higher, then drops off towards winter.
  6. That indicates a problem if you don't have aircon. !lol Air conditioning dries the air through it's compression/condensation cycle. So air comes out nice and dry and it literally sucks the water molecules off the windscreen into the passing airflow. This is why you should drink plenty of non alcoholic fluids on long-haul flights, the cabin aircon makes you de-hydrated otherwise. It's the other good reason for having aircon imo.

    VAG.COM

I'm also assuming OBD2 but it's rained pretty much constantly since I got the car home. I've not even popped the bonnet yet.

    VAG.COM

I now have the car, I think I'd like the software to go with it. I MUST have it, I'm in IT - think of the shame if I didn't. I know VAG.COM is the most popular so where's the best place to get it and a lead to go with it? Are there any recommended alternatives?
  9. Wow, didn't realise what a can of worms this might be! I'm a rust-o-phobe tbh, I hate rust with a passion and having exposed lips on the arches (front and rear) makes me a bit nervous. Every car I looked at before this one has had rusted arch lips, so I know they can be a problem. Styling wise, I've seen one with smoothed colour coded arches and it looked pretty good, but I tend to go for a standard non-nasty person attracting look so the arches might just catch an eye or two. I even bought it from Vince with it's standard wheels to keep it lower key - those split rim BBS's were very nice, bu
  10. I've just bought my highline (from Mangold). The arches are in good condition at the moment but I'm considering getting some GTi arches and fitting them for long term paint protection/anti rust purposes. I'd probably rub them smooth and paint them to match. Would that be a good thing to do, or a bad thing? Or, are there any alternatives, like an aftermarket arch and lip liner to protect this area?
  11. You'd have to buy it then book it in at the bodyshop for painting. I'm sure they'd be happy to charge you for that if you asked.
  12. The knock could be anything, bit difficult without seeing the car. Hard enough when you've got it in front of you. It COULD be something as daft as the exhaust just touching the body when cold - don't forget they move a bit as they heat up. Cold might put it right next to the bodywork. I've seen this on 3-4 cars of different makes over the years. It's unlikely to be pinking when running cold as it's probably on choke at that point.
  13. anorak - actually that doesn't sound that far fetched. Depends on the track and driver but on racing slicks I bet it gains a lot of time in the corners compared to the others.
  14. The oil temp is merely a co-incidence, nothing actually happens as a result of it coming into a displayable range. It's just a sign that the engine is warming up. As the others have said, it does sound like damp. Most garages can test HT leads, the kit isn't that expensive. Wear rubber gloves when working around HT leads, coils, dizzies and coil packs. Had a jolt from one once, it is NOT pleasant! You can end up very dead if unlucky. Hot wire MAF sensors (meter actually) are good to go in about 2-3 seconds. They don't require a warm up period.
  15. I must have a super light foot. I managed just under 36 back from Surrey to Manchester with quite a bit of stop start and slow running on the M25. It was constant 80mph the rest of the way. Mind you, I used to travel the country to supply/fit technical parts about 5 years ago and I could always managed an extra 50 miles out of a tank of diesel than everybody else. So maybe I have! I managed 126,000m in 1 year. !amazed
  16. I'll try and keep it in fine fettle. I'm not one for thrashing cars so it should be a happy home for it. You needn't worry. Vince is gutted, but needs must as they say.
  17. I travelled all the way down to Surrey on the train(s) yesterday to complete the deal with Mr Mangold for the purchase of his very fine example of a 1997 highline. As recommended by a number of members on here and with very good reason. Clearly an enthusiastic owner, a stickler for detail and all round nice guy! It was a long day - 13 hours in total after including the manadatory M25 traffic and standstill on the M6 while they closed one side for 20 mins to put out cones. But it was definately worth it, the car (as expected) never missed a beat and although I took it easy on the way home at 8
  18. I was party right, but overly gloomy in my prediction! Lost pressure but only the tensioner is very lucky. I had no idea they had hydraulic adjusters. Most of my knowledge is gained elsewhere... Since I bought my car yesterday, it's time to start reading up on the VR6 unit me thinks.
  19. Replied to your other thread - combined is 25 mpg. Just look for reviews. The mk4 VR6 model is the 4motion unless you're looking at an R32?
  20. Combined figure of 25 mpg. That's a 4 motion model.
