Thought i would stick my daily up here after owning her since November last year, although i have been a member on here for 11 year since i had my first VR (mulberry highline), sorry for the long post

Well i missed my first VR so much i purchased another (some 8 years later) this time with a bit more go, in the form of a charger, and this time 3 door instead of 5 (although now i have kids and didn't before, which seems the wrong way round, but they made me sell it last time, so now its my choice!!!)

Bit of basic info, its a 96 staged 1 charged VR thats had a bit of love over the years on it. However now since the previous owner bodged lots of things needs a whole lot more love

So everyone likes pictures:

IMG_5079_zpsc05e0b09.jpg

Basic outside spec:

Fully repainted at some point in its life, with smoothed tailgate, flared arches, vento front, flushed washer jets, side repeaters removed (then added later elsewhere, why i don't know) Audi door handles and parts of the rear bumper colour coded

Limited interior pic, but a quick one of the dash, once i had changed the tiny wheel to a nice BBS one i had lying about:

5E958E7B-CB56-4533-9F99-3705C913F465_zps

Spec:

Recaro front seats, vento rear seats both trimmed in red leather, with also the dash, headlining, abc pillars, door cards and parcel shelf all trimmed too.

The oily bits:

OBD II VR6 with a stainless 6 branch and exhaust, stage 1 charged, and a stealth map. Its also running konisport coilovers and i think 312mm brakes up front, oh and some RH ZW1's in 17 by i think 9's all round, again painted by stevie and needing some love, but not by me, gonna be for sale as i have a collection of other wheels i want to use ;-)

Well all was sort of well for the first few months, apart from a cold start issue. tracked this down to what i think is damage to the wiring loom to the blue temp sensor. However early part of this year things started to go downhill for the car, bits of trim falling off the interior, tyres not sealed properly, stereo issues. Then due to the non-wrapped 6 branch one of the heater matrix pipes splits, and with VW wanting £170 for the pipe, she was taken off the road.

I did find a replacement pipe for £30 in the end from VW hertidge, which was a win. Fitted back driving and things went down hill (i drove it about 5 miles) real problems running, struggling to hold power and heavy breathing from the crankcase breather (through a bit of garden hose), i gave up and parked her up fearing the worst. Left her two months until yesterday, when i needed her again.

Cleared fault codes and she fired up first time, and sounded and felt alright. Still the issue with the blue temp sensor and lack of charcoal canister, but great to be driving again. In this time laid up, the interior had taken a turn for the worse. Lots of bits or trim falling off, due to being stuck together with double sided sticky tape, and lots of squeaks and rattles from the general poor workmanship gone into it, with most parts not fitting properly :-(

So its now up to date, and it clearly needs some work. I have driven her less than 2k, she has spent 3 months off the road and needs lots of work..... hmmm sound like my other 3 'project' cars, oh and the timing chains need doing

Plan is to attack everything over the next couple weeks as i have some 'gardening leave' currently

List of jobs are:

Engine out, for new chains (yes they are making lots of noise now) clutch, heat wrapping the 6 branch manifold, quite why they weren't done when the previous owner had the car i don't know. Then maybe a light bit more tuning :-)

Interior out for a fix on the previous bodged work

Stereo out to actually install it correctly and stick my decent head unit in

New summer wheels going off to mike for some loving

Brake overhaul as the discs are warped (new that when i purchased the car) and an upgrade to fit in with the planned power upgrade.

Gear selector off to be replaced by the O2J upgrade

Then once thats done i might consider a full repaint as I think stevie wonder did the prep work on the bonnet, plus i have caught the front lip, cracking a little of the paint on the front bumper. Will also clean up a few minor rust spots too.

So work starts tomorrow on her, already purchased loads of parts and a trip to TPS tomorrow for the timing chain bits is on the cards as well as a few calls to get some other parts ordered.

Will get some up to date pictures too and more of the interior.

Also has anyone got any recommendations on what clutch to use, going stage 2 charged with a few other bits, pennies allowing, so something that could handle up to around 300bhp

Welcome mate! Looks tidy in the pics and can't believe you have such a big todo list like that! 3 months is nothing. My Corrado was off the road for 4 years, managed drive it most of last summer but the engine is shot. Currently having new one built at stealth and back soon. Good luck getting your teeth into those jobs

Going to look nice when it's all done, that's one of the reasons why I'm not a fan of fancy retrims they never seem to age very well! What's the stage one charger you have? Is it a z engineering?

Fancy retrims done right are good, this was botched from the outset, edges not fitted right, trim bits not put in the right places, then lots of bits held on with double sided sticky tape hiding bits that simply didn't fit. My fault partly as lots of the problems were there when I purchased the car, but either I couldn't see them (hidden), I didn't notice in the 30 min look round the car or at the time I thought they weren't too bad..... Just when you start adding them up, there are a lot of issues.

The stage 1 charger set up, I think is a z engineering set up

Well after my chat with vince yesterday, these arrived today

E18EE827-101B-4945-BDB7-0A011C02BC8A_zps

Should work well with this I have been sitting on a while

Now this is a stage 2 supercharger set up, to replace the current stage 1 setup the car is running. Should see the car push out over 285bhp once all fitted :-)

Lots more bits to arrive in the next few days. I am also sitting on quite a few parts I have been collecting for the last few months

Another day, another package

75333E32-D9B1-4F01-8865-FBF8D4AD4A56_zps

Go these as is had trouble with the ones going to the heater matrix as the previous owner fitted a stainless manifold and didn't wrap it, making the already old rubber pipes perish much faster. Surprisingly the whole kit was cheaper than replacement ones from vw, though as mentioned before i did find cheap replacements from vw heritage if anyone needs any

How does it drive with the stage one charger on it? As I've got one sitting on the garage floor that I need to do something with! Though I'm missing the little bracket that replaces the tensioner at the moment.

Currently (when no fault codes) it drives pretty well, like a vr with a bit more urgency, how they should have been out the box really. It's quick but not fast fast if that makes sense. Very linea power delivery

You might have trouble sourcing the missing bracket of yours though, have you tried calling vince to see if he has one spare?

Well more progress today.

Booked the car in on Tuesday for a leakdown test and a compression test, hopefully tell me if anything is up with the engine anyway. I am looking to get the head rebuild anyway but don't want to find out I have an issue with the bottom end once complete.

That's a point, can anybody recommend a decent machine shop to sort my head out, hopefully local to me, Reigate in Surrey J8 M25??

So in other progress today had to clear some space to work on the car.... Well this was in the way, one of my other projects (waiting for new engine, paint, interior and suspension)

F8D63771-8598-42C1-A50E-851A901BE5E0_zps

I had removed the suspension for some work on it

151EC1A4-A21D-488B-806B-8DCBE8564BF0_zps

So into the stores for a rummage and found some struts and springs for her, new top mounts, bump stops and track control arms as these were a bit too old for use

Ready for an MOT tomorrow and then it's back on the road, so I have space to tear the golf down after it's tests on Tuesday

It was just under a grand too, includes chains, headgasket kit, head bolts, thermostat bits and polo gear change bit conversion bits.

Still need to get tappets which i have found a nice cheap place to get INA ones and the second hand gearbox cables.

Hopefully that will bit it then, apart from the head rebuild.

This rebuild is looking to cost me a hell of a lot!!! Oh well you can't take it with you

Results are in from the garage today and it's not good news

Well it's breathing heavy through the crankcase breather

Compression test

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

175. 142. 138. 172. 159. 161

Leak test

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

50%. 55%. 65%. 20%. 20%. 20%

And when testing it was leaking so badly it was coming back through many different point and other cylinders when doing it

So it's pretty fecked. Think I might get another bottom end and build it up, guess how far do I got, 2.9 overbore? forged bottom end? Low compression bottom end??

Anybody any ideas what this blue plug is supposed to go to? I thought it was charcoal canister as I have an error code with it, but further investigation revealed it's still there...
