CAR JUST BACK FROM AWESOME GTI

Recommended Posts

just got the VR back from Awesome. had the AVO's replaced the WEITEC coilovers, full geometry reset and switched the wheels over to genuine 5 stud vr6 winter wheels ( g60 type ) with brand new set of Uniroyal Rain Expert tyres.

what can i say.

its like a brand new car and the handling is night and day compared to the AVO's. it's so much smoother now. no crashing, banging and so direct now. will try and get some pics up soon.

few days driving the car on the new set up now and what a change. the difference a set of wet tyres make are unreal. any corner, any bend, any puddle, it just glides through. the WEITEC's are probably the best set up dampers i have experienced and i been through a few. standard, koni, bilstein, avo, now these. i'd recommend them to anyone.

just had a set of UNIROYAL RAINSPORT 2 delivered to go onto the BBS wheels once the crappy weather is over. these get a better review in the dry than toyos, yokohamas, bridgestones and all the other major brands and in damp or wet weather come alive. cant wait till they've stopped gritting.

www.tyretest.com

comes out with a score of 1.9 only about 2-3 other tyres that score the same and i think only about 2 tyres with a score of 1.8

german tyre tests give it the same or slightly higher but you'd need to translate the sites for the outcome.

UNIROYAL are a very highly rated, under advertised tyre and bought by a lot of people who fully appreciate a tyres strength and not blinded by fancy tread patterns and the latest trend. they do what they should and excel at it. more than enough reason for me to put my money into them. i put them on every car i have.

toyos are ok. changed from them a few years ago. obviously, the lower the score, the better the rating.

1 = excellent

5 = poor

any summer tyre or tyre with a stiff side wall will not perform as good in bad weather or temperatures below 7 degrees c as the silica compound is not designed to work so low. there's just not enough give in the side wall when it get really cold. whereas an all season / wet or winter tyre is made from a different compound and designed to still work and be flexible in temperatures below 7 degrees c.

i always run winter tyres during the cold months then wets for the rest of the year. the beauty of the new RAINSPORT 2 tyres is they perform as good and if not better than specific summer tyres in the dry and better than any tyre in the wet.

why would you run wet weather tyres during summer ? according to that site the Rainsport's arent as good as plenty of other tyres in the dry ??

will keep my toyo's on my show wheels and get some better tyres on the winter wheels for next year but mega happy with the Toyo's over summer - best tyres I have ever had plus that site although in theory useful doesnt take into account the knowledge or driving ability of the people writing the reviews

as with anything, it's personal.

what i was saying was that from my own experience and running all manner of hot hatches over the years through to Audi rs2's and rs4's, i have used and tried all the major brands of tyres and can't find anything that comes close to Uniroyals. they just aren't fashionable. but i know what i want to have on my cars when the most important thing on it is a little patch of rubber the size of your hand.

this is a good review site too:

fashion has nothing to do with it !! I have ran loads of different tyres on VR6's and that's the point as far as I am concerned as these tyres arent going on any other car, and I know where my money will be going when I come to renew the summer tyres, on Toyo's again :)

second review on the site you posted about Toyo T1R "But I definitely recommend these over the Uniroyal Rainsport 2 that i ran last winter about the same price but more grip. Very good tyre for my type of car, will certainly buy again" - pretty much sums it up inmo, the Uniroyal may be decent tyres but for the car i drive the Toyo's are better.

its all down to personal taste i run 888s at the mo but have run toyos tr1s and IMO they are one of the best tyres for a vr6 and the way i drive it .... thats not to say the uniroyals are crap cos i dont know ... i just found a tyre that works for me and thats what im sticking to and im sure Ben is the same ..... everyone allowed there own opinion so ..... its like what you have just put .... looks like the wrong site for me. out of here. signed off. .... you have tried it dont like it for what ever reason ...everthing is not for everyone but we try our best to please everyone but cant do it all the time ....
