Any advice on whether i should change mounts etc or n e thing else would be grateful
ingham 5
best thing to do is go to vw and ask for quote for parts (thats what i did, they gave me nice list )then you can check you get right ones if you get them from else where
Valver 0
I'll dig out the part numbers for you tomorrow as I've just done this. Get the tensioner and guides from VAG, but the chains are much cheaper from GSF and the same part number. The twin chain on my OBD1 lump was £30 from GSF and £55+VAT from VAG!!! Geastb 0
Maybe an idea to have this stickyed somewhere for future reference? Or maybe a FAQ? Very useful info - are those part numbers for OBD1 or 2 tho?
Valver 0
The OBD1 part numbes are the same as listed by Pete apart from the chain, my twin upper chain was 021 109 503 A.HTH

VRVIRGIN 0
Can anyone give a ruff estimate as to how big a job it is to replace them. How lomg do you reckon it would take a skilled spanner to it for instance.
VR6Pete 1,455
it's a gearbox off job im afraid. your talking at least 5 hours work minus removing the box I'd say?

mickelson 0
Thanks for the link Nerih. excellent!!! Valver, pete and ACF8181, thanks for your info too. i feel alot more confident doin this now. All I need to do now is confirm whether my head is on its way out and kill 2 birds with one stone. cheers Mick
acf8181 0
just check, double check, and triple check that the timing is spot on before you start it. the bottom end is quite easy to get spot on, but the top sometimes seems like it needs to be between teeth...the car will probably be safe either way but will not run right one way.
mickelson 0
what makes it so difficult to align then on the top end? is it cus of wear on the sprockets mixed with a new chain? does the timing tool that you pyt between the cams not hold it in place enough???
acf8181 0
well, its just not very precise thats all....the bentley says that the tool may need help to go in, but on mine it looked like it could have been either way, i.e. it was kinda halfway between two. may have just been mine tho. mickelson 0
Well there's only one way to find out, got a feeling I will be doin it soon. Cheers M8
VRVIRGIN 0
Does anyone think it could be a safe bet in getting these timing chain components from GSF. Had a look on their site but their product codes are different to the ones given earlier by Pete, yet they claim to be the genuine article. Any advice?
