VR6 Temptation

Recommended Posts

Hi all

I am new to these forums and im just after a little advice. I'm 19 and started off with my 1.4 mk3 as my first car. I then moved up to a 2.0l GTI 16V which I love driving but have now been offered a swap for a VR6 and I'm really not sure! I would love a VR6 but there are so many factors putting me off, most obviously being that I am only 19 and only have a couple years driving experience (Im scared to be honest!) and also I don't know whether I can afford to run it. The insurance isnt looking TOO bad but I have done my research on the VR6's and I'm really worried about petrol costs.

Being a 2.8 it's not going to be a great car for fuel efficiency, I just don't want to get fed up with it. I originally got a little loan out to start a project on a GTI, I was going to put some of my money towards the bodyworks and engine and get a friend who photographs for Fast Car to get it on a double page spread, luckily I havent started the works because now I am extemely tempted to do spend the money on the VR6.

The VR in question is mystic blue, 3 door, nice mk4 alloys, 122k on the clock with FSH - all in all, a nice looking car, the reason the person wants to downgrade is because he doesnt want to pay that much for the insurance. An insurance quote for a 19 year old female with 1 NCB came to £1339 for the VR6, which I am prepared to pay.

I just want some advice, shall I stick with the GTI 16V? Or move on to a VR6? Should I be concerned about the mileage on the clock? I know VW's go on forever but being a big engine, I don't know if that has an affect? I know a fast car is only as fast as you make it but my mum and dad are really against their little girl getting a 2.8 monster at 19, which is understandable. Im not a racer, I dont drive stupidley, yes I put my foot down sometimes but I think im quite mature considering :-p

Any advice?

insurance sounds reasonable, theres a 19 year old guy just signed up who has been quoted 400 a month,!!!

fuel, you get 260miles to a 55 litre tank... really depends on how many miles you do... i dont do many.

the power delivery and noise is alot smoother and sweeter on a vr, altho there isnt a huge differnce in BHP the VR has alot more torque....

but if youve driven a 16V id say go for it, i went straight from a 1.4 to a VR6

hello and welcome... I went from a 1.4 to the VR and didn't have any problems.. Just took some time to adjust..

At that millage the only thing your looking for over what you would check anyway is timing chains

Ask if his had them done.. if not be prepared to pay out £600 to have them changed in the future if they get noisy

Redline it everywhere and fuel will start to get pricey but by the sounds of how you drive you wont notest a huge difference in fuel...

Perhaps £10 more on fuel a week at a guess

My rents wernt to happy when they finally worked out the size of the engine lol Best thing is not to tell them till its to late lol

fuel economy really isn't that bad i got 360 miles out of the last tank with a mixture of driving' date=' round town only is worse though.

The sound of the engine will swing it from the old 4 pot :)

I'm 22 and paying 690 fully comp. =)

I can't comment on fuel usage as I'm ironing out problems with mine and I'm getting around 18mpg.

These guys and gals are averaging more than me with superchargers and turbos....so I doubt you can go wrong and you WILL fall in love with it.

Go for it girl..you will never regret it if you drive it properly..I drive mine every day to and from work (50 mile round trip)..and the mfa 1 reads about 26 mpg average at about 60 mph in 5th most of da way...mfa 2 reads 28+ almost always (give or take a bit)..in saying that when i drive it hard ive seen 17 mpg.. and long journeys 30+ mpg..best ive ever seen is 37 mpg long drive in 5th...BUT...When u put your foot to the floor in 2nd an 3rd the noise (full Miltek) and the grunt you get will leave you smileing for the rest of the day....I PROMISE YOU

Go for it girl...my missus went from a mk2 1.6 cl to a converted 2.0 16v lump in the said mk2....then went to a 'normal' mk3 1.8gl (hated it!), i then bought her a mk3 8v gti (which she found too sluggish, so i converted that to a vr6 and have had no complaints since!!!...Her car is literally having the chains and head gasket done as we speak (im taking a tea break at the mo!) and then im bolting a charger on it in 2 months time!! She loves the 6 pot sound and the klds like it too, so all round, im a happy person!! And insurance is £450 fully comp.
