acf8181 0
they did a pressure test and found that i have a coolant leak (only under pressure) from the back of the thermostat housing. anyone got a spare housing? also had the codes checked and it cames up with an ISV fault (i knew it would as it doesn't idel when cold)...how'd i clean it again? also had road speed sensor problem (already knew as the speedo doesn't work), and finally engine speed sensor - bloke said it could have been there due to me dismantling the engine, he reset it and said it shouldn't come back - is this true? mightyvr6 0
give the isv a good spray with carb cleanerengine speed sensor (crank sensor?) gives a fault code (no signal) if the engine isn't switched on.I'd put a new thermostat housing on as they have a habit of cracking. The housing is in 3 pieces so you could just replace the damaged piece.[ Edited Mon Jun 21 2004, 07:08PM ]
VR6Pete 1,455
i had a leak on me stat housing, it was just the seals that needed doing, while your at it, replace the stat with a nuspeed one if you havent already done so.
acf8181 0
it'll have to be a whole new housing, as one of the bolts is rounded on it...and i'll have to chop through it to remove it. where do i get neuspeed thermostats from then pete? and how much?i just cleaned the ISV...there was loads of wool stuff in the exit tube...is that normal? binliner 0
A new thermostat housing isnt expensive... Ive just had mine replaced about £30 fitted
speedo 0
ACF...... yep you need the engine running to check the engine speed sensor, Neuspeed thermostst from awsome gti, and get a new thermosts housing and seals. Dont scrimp on this one!! it comes in three parts, plus 3 seals. They all buckle under heat, and 9/10 if you change only one part, the rest will not seal. It`s a easy job, but if you do it and it leaks still, you wont be happy. Its only about £50 for the whole lot
VR6Pete 1,455
stat are £20 quid, got it from awsome GTI, if your a premium member, check the premium member section for info on gettin 10% off the retail price.
acf8181 0
yeah, thats what i thought about the engine speed sensor.i think you'll find the housig is a bit more than £50 speedo, try about £130!
mightyvr6 0
what's so special about the neuspeed thermostat?
VR6Pete 1,455
operates at a lower termperature im lead to beleive, so should make the car run lower temp, if mina has one it must be good lol
andy 0
acf, the wool stuff has probably come from the isv sound deadner, the black plastic container attached to the isv, the contents of mine regularly clog up the isv, replaced the sound deadner and it still emptied itself in the isv and pipes within 2 weeks, makes the car run like sh*te! VR6Pete 1,455
whats the ISV? and where is located?
ingham 5
i think that only obd1 cars have isv( idle stabliztion valve)
acf8181 0
that is true, only for us obd1 boys to worry about.i cleaned that wool out, and it was well smooth last night...i have to go and start it cold in a min, so lets see what happens...will it idle, or stall like its been doing for a while. 1990 1
Did it idle ok?
acf8181 0
its not perfect (dont think i got all the crap out), but it is a vast improvment.but i had something else happen last night, was coming back from buckmore round the M25 and got a weird 'stutter a couple of times...my mate thought i'd moved my foot of the pedal really quick and then jumped back on it again. any ideas? was raining if that makes a difference. andy 0
get all the crap out, I had to clean mine about 4 times b4 I got it all out, each time the car would act up in an entirely different way, stuttering was one, bad idle was another, engine revs climbing and falling on their own (ie up to about 3krpm) was the most worrying, each time it was crap in the isv

MarkGolf 6
Is teh corrado lump abit of a mix up?
acf8181 0
cause your coilpacked vr6 is still obd1!only the very very early obd1 vr6's had a dizzy. '92's only from what i've worked out (so all J plate, and some K plate). they then switched to coilpack, but it was still obd1.corrado's are prob the same. what year did they stop making the 'rado, '95 or '96? in which case all 'rados are obd1 (but pre'93 were dizzy, post '93 coilpack)
