  1. Right, thought I'd start a project thread as I'm starting to make a little progress with the car now It's my first VR6, I bought it back in april/may time this year. All of this post is "in no particular order", mainly as I can't remember what order i did it in! This is the car when I first got it: Mechanically it's in pretty good condition, but the chains are now starting to rattle slightly. The body work is good, just a couple of tiny patches of rust on the wheel arch and drivers door. Electronically however, it was a mess. I discovered that a previous owner had decided to start fitti
  2. Calico, thanks for those links, they look like they could be just what I'm after! Bungy, tell me about it, I've lost count of the number of times I've thought to myself "why am I doing this? It'd be so much easier if I wasn't crammed underneath the car" lol Grrr, that's good info too, thanks!
  3. Hi all, I'm after recommendations for an engine crane and stand. I've decided to buy a second VR6 engine and rebuild it before it's put in the car, minimizing the time the Golf is off the road. I'm thinking about going down the turbo route at the same time, so it'll be handy to have the engine easily accessible. Ideally the crane needs to be foldable and I'm budgeting around the £200 mark for both bits of equipment. So, suggestions please!
  4. Yeah the ABS is fine I've had a quick look on Google and most people seem to suggest (like Tony) that it's either the handbrake switch or fluid sensor, so I'll have a look at both this weekend
  5. Hi all, I noticed the other day that the handbrake warning light was very dimly lit whilst I was driving along. It would occasionally flicker brightly if I hit a bump in the road etc. The following day I changed the brake fluid, thinking it might be warning me of low fluid. So it's now got nice, new, fresh fluid. This hasn't cured the light though. Could the light be a low pad warning? I did the fluid with the wheels on, so didn't really look at the discs and pads (also, I seem to remember that they were changed not long before I bought it in May/June). P.S - I know I should probably hav
  6. Looks like it was a mistake and he's going to send it In the mean time, if someone could take a quick pic of their wiring I'd appreciate it. Just so I can make something up temporarily while I'm waiting.
  7. SUPER THREAD BUMP!! I've got exactly the same problem, did this ever get resolved? I've got both headlights, one of which has a relay attached to the back of it, but that's it. No wiring harnesses or anything. Funnily enough, this little detail was missing from the ebay description >. It could of course be a genuine mistake and the seller has forgotten to put them in the box, so I've sent him a message and will give him the benefit of the doubt until I hear otherwise.....
  8. Looking good so far. There's definitely something satisfying about replacing broken/dodgy bits of trim lol.
  9. Everyday I manage to convince myself I can hear a new noise lol. Saying that, these are so much more enjoyable to work on than my previous BMWs and Nissans, I don't mind too much when it goes wrong lol.
  10. I have one of those lists too lol.
  11. Ford part number for the valve is 7364573, should be about £45 inc VAT
  12. Ah I see! Cool, thanks very much. I'll get them to adjust it slightly when it's in to have the tracking sorted.
  13. How did you adjust the camber on the front? Mine still catch occasionally when I hit bumps in the road too quickly.
  14. The PCD is correct, you might want to check the centre bore too though. As for the offset, I have no idea what the Golf usually runs, mine are ET15 and it had to have the arches rolled/flared (16x8.5 front and 16x9 rear). Saying that though, mine's lowered to within an inch of it's life lol.
  15. Yeah that's what I've done, I just think it would be nice to have everything complete if I ever decide to sell them
  16. Do you by any chance have a link to the knob?
  17. That's it! It looks like my knob is missing then lol. Cheers Craggsy, much appreciated!
  18. Cheers Craggsy I've checked the part number on the Koni website and it says "Front and rear dampers are externally adjustable". This ( http://finder.koni.com/pdf/1150-5002-1-manual.pdf ) is the manual for my coilies, as you can see from the pics there are no knobs on the top of them, so I'm thinking that maybe the damping isn't adjustable and the way they've worded it on the website has confused me lol.
  19. Swear filter is working overtime lol. Thanks Craggsy, I'll have a go at this tomorrow. I've heard tale that if it's not done that way, you have to remove the coilover, remove the spring, compress the shock and adjust it. In which case, it'll be getting left alone until I literally have NOTHING better to do lol.
  20. Specifically the damping! Does anyone know how to do this? I've looked for a manual but it's all in German, so I've got no clue what it says. Ideally, I want to try and stiffen the ride up a little.
  21. Yeah, that's basically what I was told yesterday. I'll get around to fixing it eventually, but for now I have 'hidden' the fault lol
  22. I've got Konis on mine, they're great! Pretty comfy (well, for coilovers anyway), easy to adjust, very well built and look nice too (not that you ever really see them lol). No idea what they cost though, they were on the car when I got it.
  23. Right, I've double checked with another MOT tester and they confirmed that if you remove the ABS from a VR6 it will FAIL the MOT. So, I'd best get around to fixing it then!
  24. Yep, in OBD2 cars the brake "bias" was controlled by the ABS module. The bracket should still be there though I think. Not that it really matters as I've had it confirmed that removing the ABS will result in a failed MOT EDIT - It appears my previously mentioned confirmation isn't quite as confirmed as it appeared to be lol. I'll update when I have something concrete.
