  1. The spark plugs on my VR6 are the oldest service item by a year.

I want to change them this week prior to my trip up north. There is no issue but I want to change them.

I've looked on many different websites and they all supply different types of spark plugs for the Gal.

I was wondering if anyone with a 24v 2.8 had a particular plug they look for or if anyone knows what to look for?.

    Cheers in advance.

  2. Ah Pete. I was expecting some discolouration, just not a mm or 2 of soot.

I've had a read that rich running and crap fuel can cause this too.

Book states fuel as 95, not 97, so that's what she has, but I don't put known brands in, she has the 95 from the costcutter petrol station down the road. Never notice any difference when the occasional tank of BP goes in.

On another note, the new crank sensor is preventing hot start issues, so that's a good result.

Cheers for the reply either way matey. Hope you've sorted the belt.

  3. Had a powerflow stainless steel cat back installed on a 24v 2.8 a few weeks ago.

Within 100 miles and small trips out, the inside of the outlets are caked in carbon deposit/soot.

The noise has changed slightly, probably from said deposits.

I do have an issue with the crank sensor and rough idle at cold and hot. Hot starts usually end up with misfire sounds and rough running or fire up and then drop to stall.

Cold starts even with the fast idle, make the car feel unbalanced.

Could the build up of soot coincide with the rough running/crank issue?

No smoke of any colour noticed at any point, except condensation burning off after a night of cool air.

    Cheers all.

  4. I've just read this 30 minutes after having it fitted. Thank you for the reply matey.

I'm glad I clarified with them prior to leaving the car there. They were under the impression that it was to be a strait through with a non resonated back box. After asking them for a middle box, They put one in.

    Mine has gone on to a galaxy mk2 with 24v 2.8 VR6.

It's loud. Very loud. Not exactly what I wanted to be honest. You know the deep drone you have from louder strait through exhausts?... that's what it sounds like at lower revs. I can live with it, but the Galaxy is the only car we own and I'm the only driver, so I don't know how the kids or specifically, my partner will act when they're in it.

That said, the extra 12 valves certainly make the car sound so much better when flooring it. That notorious R32 rasp steps in just after 4k revs. Very addictive.

It sounds overly loud when in narrow residential areas cruising at 30 or 20.

I've also attracted unwanted attention from a van full of travellers who went miles out of their way and back on themselves trying to follow me. Last glimpse I had after losing them down country lanes and turning off at a junction, was their van doing the better part of 70 or more past the road I dived into.

  5. So I've decided to bite the bullet and sort the exhaust. One of 3 costly things I need to get her sorted.

I've rang around 8 different custom exhaust specialists and Powerflow have been the cheapest. The cat back system will be £399 all inclusive.

So I just wondered if anyone here had experience with Powerflow exhausts?. I know I can google reviews, but forum members are just as valuable for opinions.

    Thank you.

  6. I'm looking for somewhere to have a custom exhaust made for my Galaxy. Don't worry, it has a VR6.

All I want is a cat back system, just strait through pipe to a single back box with DTM outlets. The problem I have, is everywhere wants the better part of £500..... for a back box, some pipe and a few hangers. I know there's more to it than that, but near 500 is silly, especially as when I had my old AAA Golf, full systems from scorpion, Jetex, or milteck were less than 400.

Does anyone have any experience or know of somewhere around the Midlands, excluding MIJ and Custom Chrome, that is reasonably cheap?.

    Cheers.

  7. Have a 24v VR6. AYL engine in a Galaxy.

Past several months with increased frequency, I have trouble starting her when she's warm/hot.

    She fires up and dies.

Takes one or more attempts to run but even then, she runs slightly lumpy.

Other times she will start up after a few attempts and run smoothly.

    No lack of power noticed.

New coil packs, full service and a new MAF within the past 7 months. It occurred occasionally before then but nowhere near as often as it does now.

    Anyone have any ideas please?.

    Thank you

  8. So ever since I bought the car in September, idle and light pressing of the throttle up to around 1500 - 1750rpm causes the car to shake. It is almost as though she's unbalanced.

In gear and accelerating away or cruising doesn't cause any issue. It is only when the car is stationary.

I've just got back from the school run in her and whilst pulled up in a parking space, I could just slightly feel the vibrations, almost like an ever so slight misfire. I could see the rpm needle fluctuating miniscule amounts in time with the rough idle.

She has had new plugs, coils and general service. I'm at a loss. I know people will mention getting it plugged in but I havn't had chance yet.

It's not throwing any codes, just feels rough, My AAA never vibrated like this on tick over.

It does have a DMF but that isn't dying yet.

Should also mention that I've ran 4 tanks in a row with injector cleaner too.

    Does anyone have any ideas?.

  9. Hi all.

Just been down to the rolling road. Car was and has been fine and never missed a beat since I've owned her.

On the way back, the car went lumpy and rough, felt like it was firing on 4 cylinders. Engine light flashed away.

Got her back now and stuck a scan tool on her.

    P0300 - Multiple misfires detected

    P0303 - Misfire cylinder 3

    P0305 - Misfire cylinder 5

    P0306 - Misfire cylinder 6

Now I could understand one coil pack going but not two or three in one fell swoop. This screams to me either bad luck OR fuel issue?.

No codes appeared regarding cps or MAF or anything else. Just the 4 above.

    Any ideas chaps?

    Cheers.

  10. My 24v AYL, as far as I've been able to tell after trawling through google, has the same size MAF housing as the 12v AAA.

I'm looking to buy a cone filter and plenty of universal fitment sizes claim to be acceptable for the 24v. I remember ordering a universal cone for the 12v AAA but when it arrived, it was too small.

    Are they both 76mm?

    Cheers all.

  11. Before I bought the Galaxy and before we learned to expect our forth child, I was looking at estates, namely the Mondeo ST220.

A chap I spoke to on a few occasions, traffic police, told me that the gearbox/stick was like stirring porridge and that theme seems to follow the ford name.

I know the V6 petrol is a VW design but I've noticed since buying it, that snap gear changes or quick shifting is not really doable. In my old VR6, gear changing was crisp and I never encountered any crunching. In this newer engine with 6 gears, I have to be smooth and gentle with gear selection and it does fit the description of pushing a wooden spoon through syrup.

It's as good as, the same engine found in the v6 4motion mk4 golfs and I can't imagine that they were designed to be so sloppy with the "performance" idea behind them.

Is there anything I could do to remove the slop or does it sound like the design?.

    Cheers all,

    Monk.

  12. I'll have a look at the level first then.

If the level is fine then I'd doubt an oil change would cure it and the damage would already be done, still, I suppose it wouldn't hurt, especially if you're a gearbox specialist and you know 100% more than me.

There has never been spots of oil from the car on the ground and the engine is clean too.

Just out of curiosity, what's a ballpark going rate for a box rebuild?

    Thank you again, Matt.  :)

  13. End bearing is a common failure, defo sure its gearbox not timing chains?

Not 100% certain on it being the timing chains, however, the noise is gearbox/transmission.

Chains were done at a VW specialist by the previous owner. Reciepts states guides, chains, tensioners ect, for £1300. Car clicked on 80,000 miles earlier and the chains were done at just over 75,000.

End bearing is common on the 6 speed 2.8 24v?

Thank you for taking the time to contribute, Matt.

    Monk.

  14. Well the Galaxy is throwing problems left, right and centre.

Another one that began last week was the gearbox. I ca't speak on behalf of the previous owner but I don't think the old chap that owned the car prior to me, drove it like I do.

I was out the other morning, car was fine, usual niggles and noises from dying bushes and I was taking it through the revs for about 2/3rds of a mile. Parked up, went to have a tooth drilled, came back, drove off and noticed the noise creeping in toward home.

Now, when the engine is at OT, the gearbox/transmission makes a whine that goes up or down in pitch, matching the engine revs. Higher revs makes it louder and slightly more high pitched. Engine braking and keeping the clutch engaged as I slow toward 100 revs, noise slows down and slightly decreases in pitch.

If anyone has watched the episode of Top Gear where Clarkson is driving the black Alfa V6, Hammond the spider with the broken water pump, Clarkson is on track when a thump is heard and the whine occurs. In the pits, his mechanic tells him the flywheel bearing has gone.

So..... in your opinions, do I count myself lucky that it's the flywheel, a bearing or a dry box or dying diff?

Car has the 6 speed box with the AYL 2.8 24v.

    Cheers all,

    Monk.

  15. Started today, turned the key and the engine went into its normal fast idle at 1100 - 1200 rpm for 30 seconds.

I drove it a few miles to have the tyres replaced and being a VR, it warmed up well before I reached the tyre place. Anyway, after 20 minutes I was asked to put the car in the shop.

I went outside and started the car up. She fired up and then stalled as the revs dipped to warm idle and continued past to stall.

I tried once more with a bit of throttle and she settled back down with no issue.

I have noticed that she is idling rough-ish. Between 700 and 1200rpm, using the throttle gently, she makes the car shake with what feel like misfires. These vibrations and "misfires" disappear instantly after you go above 1200rpm.

She has stalled on two further start ups today but has got going on the 2nd attempts.

The engine is a 24v 2.8 AYL. This is the first problem she has given me but has idled partially roughly for a month.

I've scanned her and no codes have been thrown out but I've not got vgcom to see an in depth report.

Do the symptoms described sound familiar or does anyone have suggestions?.

    Thanks.

    Monk.
