  1. Right, I made some progress today...removed the gearbox after god knows how long, then hit a brick wall....the fly wheel bolts are the sodding goddamn M8 TRIPLE SQUARE drive sods.

My question is, who out the knows where they can be bought and how big they are in MM?.....pretty please.

Another quick Q, in the last picture, there is a box type case. At a guess I'd say it's the oil pressure relief valve...way off the mark probably. Anyway, just need some help in identifying it as the pipe leading from it is buggered. Cheers in advance.

  2. Not sure about non A/C golfs. However, there tends to be a metal cable....like your accelerator cable, pertruding from the rear dashboard into the engine bay. It leads to one of your coolent pipes going nto the dash...Heater matrix. It should be attatched to some sort of flappy valve.

This controls the heated water coming to and from the dash HM. Try pushing and pulling the valve with your engine warm and on.....also with the blower on and see if there's a difference

Push the valve all the way forward....go check the inside of the car for heat....then pull it all the way back.

    Tell us what you find.

  3. I've had to leave my driveshafts on the gearbox and the splines attatched to the wheel hubs. Basically because I've discovered that the 6 or so female star bolts securing each DS to the tranny have been rounded off. The splined end connecting to the hub wont come off either.

It took a while, but I removed the sump...more bolts rounding off....till the O/S had enough play. Now I can't remove the gearbox because there doesnt appear to be enough space (actual GB pressing into wheel arch). I have the housing edge about 3 n 1/2 inches away from the block...the front moreso than the rear. I spent over 3hrs nearly with a crowbar, my hand...any leverege I could grab and I just couldn't remove it. Yes, both the GB and EB are supported with a trolley jack each.

Would it be worth removing the actual gearbox from the bell housing?

  4. Now the only thing that looks remotely nice on that is concealed under the bonnet.

Looks as though he's put pop rivets around the edge of every panel. AND WTF is that sh*t on the front of the bonnet. Looks like 2 pieces of stale shite have been over riveted on either side of the bonnet.

Some people amaze me. That thing is a piece of well fermented bird turd.

  5. I had the same thing happen, though I work in a hospital...uniform ect, so it dosn't stand me in good stead with the other saff and visitors to be shouted at. On the way to work, I have to drive down a dual carridgeway. Approaching the last set before I get onto the hospital turn was a load of cars on the left side. I drifted up on the outside lane toward the red light. Just as im about to head past the rear car in the stationary queue, it pulls out forcing me to slam the brakes on. I tooted my horn at her and waved (not used hand gestures), to which she proceeded to drive at 10mph in protest for about 500m with car queues sat behind me. I undertook her and she dived into the lane with me and sat up my ass till I went into the hospital, parked up and stood talking to the receptionist.

About 30 secs later, I heard "you fu**ing tw*t, what the fu*ck do you think you were doing, learn how to drive you stupid little boy"....happened to be the woman storming across a reception area with about 80ppl watching.

I told her to grow up, watch her language and point out exactly how I was the one at fault....to my amusment, some bloke walked across and shouted at her to learn how to drive and reminded her about the p*ss poor driving she showed.

When she looked at me and told me to watch my self, I looked at her and smuggly pointed out the only bad driving was hers as proven by the other chap and to kindly move on.

  6. I've had a lookski at these threads and can't find any posts relating to it. Sorry if there are.

I've bought a non running golf vr6. A project for myself. The chap I bought it off, said the chain had been under tentioned and slipped causing the timing to go out the window. He said the EV on cylinder 6 had bent slightly, HOWEVER, showed me a pic of the piston crown....not damaged, luckily.

The crank pulley timing marks are lined up but each camshaft timing groove is sitting at about 2 O'clock.

I'm taking the cylinder head off and replacing the EV. I have a VR6 timing tool that I will be using.

If the crank pulley timing mark is lined up, can the camshafts be lined up so they sit horizontally and will that mean everything is aligned? :-#

I am aware more material should sit on the lower half.

  7. Is it only [OBD1 engines with twin chains that you have to worry about or are the later OBD2 single chains engines just as lighty fail. Mines OBD2 has 140 000 and was making a slight noise but i changed it anyway when doing the headgasket.

Well, from the "how to tell the difference between OBD1 & 2", I've established that I have an OBD2 with twin chains.....I've only just bought it and they've jumped a few teeth(like that when bought). I'm replacing odds n sods and have an obd2,
