  1. Did my rear brake discs & bearings a few weeks ago including putting on MK4 calipers. Rounded the bolts on the off-side and in the end, angle grind the carrier off, to remove the disc as had no decent access to get the bolts out. Had already tried bashing in oversized spline. Obviously had to source a replacement carrier The repalcement bolt size is M10 x 21mm part Nr N907 294 01 and they cost about £1.50 each from VW. If I had time, I would use some non hex/ allen type bolts - to avoid any future problems.
  2. Yep, buy new wheel bearings (kit) for your new discs. The bolts holding the caliper carrier can be a bitch to undo. Got the nearside ones off after loads of aggro and spraying with wd40 etc. Used a 1/2 drive, reckon 3/8 would snap with the amount of force used with the breaker bar. Make sure your have a good fixing in with 8mm hex bolt, managed to round both carrier bolts on the off side. I hammered in my 1/2 drive bolt but the carrier bolt was well and truley seized. Tried banging in oversized spline bolt but no good. In the end, used a angle grinder to breaker the caliper carrier in half to
  3. Tyre choice is personal perference/ experience, I've gone onto the tyrereviews website to read what owners experiences are with their tyre choices.. Obviously tell you insurance about your new wheels and that you are going for 195 wide tyres. Never looked into it too deeply but if the standard load index is 86, is it wise to go for a lower load index? May be I am too cautious? I am hoping on my own set up that I won't need spacers even on 205/45/16 profiles. Going to buy a cheap part-worn tyre to test first. If I do need spacers then I revert back to original size alloys. My choice is to keep
  4. Haven't you offered them up yet? They definetly don't fit with my Koni(s), the koni front strut is that much shorter and the existing tyres(205/55/16) won't even rotate as its butts up to the underside of the spring coil housing. Always intending to go down to 205/45/16 to keep the rolling radius much the same (but its +1%) but going down to 195/45 will make it underread. Wouldn't want to go smaller than standard 205 width, just the same with the load index. Standard load index is 86, but a lot of tyres in 205/45/16 are 83 with only a few at 87. Narrowed down to Falkens 912s, Kumho or Hankook
  5. Good info KR. I have a used set (not yet fitted) and the stamped 2997. So assume kit is week 29 and from 1997! To be fair, the guy who sold the kit to you may have brought it 2 years ago from a shop that had it in stock since 2002. Mine aren't leaking, however there is no hardly any resistance/ damping to the front struts. I can push the piston down quite easily (might have it on its lowest setting) and it comes up slowly aswell. Is this right? Looks like the eibach springs are going to do all the work. I think I'll need them overhauled as I'm sure when I fitted nearly new (standard) damper
  6. That's what I got as well when I had a new Clifford alarm fitted. So I don't believe anything is missing from what you have described.
  7. Useful website I'm sure it has been posted before http://www.brokevw.com/ Lots of details and pictures to do with a VW gearbox in general
  8. Agony isn't it? My standard tail box pipe split from the centre box just before Christmas. I had repaired it hoping that I find a cheap second exhaust near me; no joy. But after phoning for a new replacment from various outlets, I had decied to go for a Milltek, just under £450. Had I got one befoe Xmas its would have been £390. Everyone thinks I mad spending this kind of money compared to what the car is worth. But its not worth me selling, so might as well get the best quality when things need replacing.
  9. Peter, where and what kind of price did you pay for your Milltek? Did you fit it yourself? and if so how easy? Thanks, thinking about getting one myself.
  10. Sounds like a bad earth. Had this when I fitted a Momo steering wheel in my old Mk2 and the horn would go when I put the indicators on. Have no idea where you would start though on your car.

    cat bypass

Correct for not needing the cat (unless reg as a K reg) but you still need the lambda sensors fitted to a cat-by pass pipe or the engine will run crap. Often poor running is beacuse the lambda sensors are knackered (& require replacing) so if these are not fitted............
  12. ...........VW Only got one key when we brought our car. Gave VW the VIN (& with proof of ownership) and key was coded by them. Think it was about £50 all in. Expensive but I wanted a genuine VW key. I've seen key cutting shops with a code reader and I would have thought they could get you a replacement key and match the code and for less money than what I paid?
  13. Had Bilsteins PSS9 fitted on my 4mo; absolutely transformed the handling. Had it slighlty lowered aswell. Quite expensive but I got it free through having my car featured in VW Audi magzine years ago.
  14. Boy, 6yrs old and a girl, 3yrs old.
  15. Had a similar problems many years ago on a different Vr but it was intermittent. Solved the problem by replacing the lambda sensors.
  16. Had this happend to me on a previous car and a new clutch slave cylinder solved the problem.
  17. I attempted this but the major stumbling block was that I/ we couldn't get the front wishbone bolt off (I stared to round the bolt eventually) on the nearside. So in the end it was remove the entire subframe, so heat could be applied to bolt: still no joy. Might have been able to remove with air tools right at the begining. Other thing is to consider buy replacement wishbiones with bushes already placed in; I wanted solid TT rear bushes pressed in, so a bit more work there. Also advisable to repalace all the main bolts that came off. I used a local mobile mechanic to get the bolt off and deci
  18. Had major trouble with the front bolt on the passenger side wishbone; couldn't get the bolt off and in the end subframe removed and a socket welded/ applied heat to bolt b4 the bolt shifted. Also we put in solid rear wishbones bushes from R32/TT so bit more work than buying wishbones with bushes already fitted. My mechanic couldn't understand why I didn't get new wishbones with bushes already fitted! Also had a bit of trouble getting one of the 3 13mm bolts off, eventually done with an angle grinder wearing away head of the stuck bolt. Good luck as my bushes needed replacing as it was suppose

    6 spd

Have you tried Stealth? Had a six speeder in my Mk2 Vr nearly ten yrs ago, so don't know if Stealth still do them. First three gear were replaced with lower ratios with the gear teeth straighter (stronger) and the only draw back was the whinging noise from it Felt very rapid with lower ratios at lower end speed but once into more voorm and using the remianing gears onwards it was same as standard.
  20. Mrs car and insured under her. I have own car and motorbike Car = 96P VR6 Highline Company = Elephant Age = 36 Area = Middlesex Occupation =Housewife YNC = 1 Points = 0 Modifyed? = No Categories = FC Price = under 400 Notes = Milegae limit 4k, but only did 1.5k in 12months. She has licence since 17 but this is her first ever owned car. I am named driver on policy..
  21. Lose power and then 'die' = stall/ engine cut out; don't know Lose power......nothing nothing and then come back up on power; might want to check/ renew the lambda sensors.
  22. Another Clifford 650 here. Cost £380 fitted last year from Berkshire Car sounds nr. Reading.
  23. From what you have described and what has been recently changed on my car it sounds like it would be worth changing the track rods & ends, ball joinst etc, bushes etc. I did think my steering wheel wasn't straight after refitting everything but my mechainic made sure everything was equal (re: track rod ends). So I have equal turn in on both sides rather that one side being bias. I think there are other bits that you can repalce (not that expensive) in the steering column. I'll do this as a matter of course. My 96P reg 95k miler feels like new after replacing the bits mentioned.
  24. Just wondering if anyone here owns my old white 3Dr Mk2 2.9 VR6 It had a Stealth 6 speed gear box, oil cooler, Mk3 GTi seats, momo stering wheel. Sold it in 2000 to get a 4motion. Hope the Vr is still running
  25. Problems all solved. Used an angle grinder to wear away the bolt. Wishbone font bolt was a nightmare. I started to round the bolt. I got a mobile mechanic in and he dropped and removed the subframe; used heat and everything. In the end he took away and welded another socket over the bolt and got the mother off. With the subframe off, the other side came off quote easily. So now replaced ball joints, track rod & ends & arb links rods. Feels like a new car. Only small problem now is a offset steering wheel. From reading the forums. With the car wheels facing straight, I'll disconnect th
