  1. Hi I've found out Elephant won't allow major mods like a supercharger. Therefore I'm planning on cancelling with them... I've been with them a short time since July 30th. Has anyone else had any problems cancelling with them ...did you pay any penalty...did you very little refund back.... or were they fine? It looks like HIC and Greenlight are the ones to go for if you plan to modify your car. I've not heard of HIC or heard much about Greenlight. Are they any good... which one is better, and can you get hold of them during evenings (!). My last insurer, Adrian Flux could only be gotten ho
  2. What about the immobilizer? As mentioned above...if I managed to clamber through the boot when I got to the driver seat would my key in the ignition be able to turn the engine on?
  3. Who are you with now... and were Elephant hard to cancel with...did you have to pay a penalty and/or did you get most of your money back for the time you had left on your policy?
  4. Yes mark 3 1997 golf vr6. When the car has been remotely locked and I try to open it with the key the key fits the lock no problem but the door lock knob on the inside of the window goes up and then goes straight down. Seems like some auto locking mechanism. I do have to press my key fob for a second before it opens... although its always been like this... where's a good source to get new batteries?
  5. Thanks for your reply. Please can anyone answer this - can a 1997 golf vr6 be remapped without the use of a superchip or similar chip... if no chip is required then I can't see why I should tell the ins. company... unless they had a way of finding out it had been remapped? A remap is essential to get fueling / air mixtures correct to prevent the fuel running lean causing engine damage...not only for extra power. Thanks for any info on this.
  6. Hi I recently tried to open my car with just the key and the lock knob would go up for half a second and then go straight back down again. I always use my remote key fob to lock and open my car. However when I remotely lock it and try to then open it with just my key (which fits) it does the above...briefly opens it and locks straight away. The only way I have found to get in my car with my key is through the boot but this sets of my alarm straight away and I'm sure even if I did wreck my boot trying to crawl through into the driver (with the alarm blaring) seat I wouldn't be able to start
  7. Hi I'm with Elephant insurance and when I took out their insurance I asked them would there be any problem in the future if I modified my car in any way such as adding an exhaust and sports air filter. They said no. However now I've had the car I was thinking about more extensive mods such as ecu remap or chip and possibly in the future a second hand supercharger (which I wasn't sure if Elephant would have a problem with - normally when I ring up they are in India some where and take ages to get hold of). Has anyone had any problems or good things with Elephant, where they allowed you to ha
  8. Thanks for all your info guys. How much would I be looking at for a second hand ZR2. And approximately how much for a second hand V1 or V2 which I know would be more expensive?
  9. Are your problems happening from cold? From cold there's normally a strange high pitch noise...more of a wurring /buzzing noise which only lasts 30 secs to a minute or so but is not that audiable unless you really listen and open the window... but that is normal from cold. And I've been told lumpy power is to be expected when the engine is cold...again this only lasts a couple of minutes until it warms up...its to do with with air fuel sensor (MAF sensor) taking a while to become fully functional. You won't get any power until over 2k revs so this is not unusual. If you're hearing rattling
  10. How much would it cost to change the gear differentials to what the Corrado G60 uses? I have to admit the only one single thing I find frustrating with the golf VR6 is the gearing (and slightly wallowy suspension)... to get proper accelaration you need to start from 1st or 2nd ...and then accelarate through the gears one by one to really get the power (trying to accelarate from third onwards has no where the same affect even in the high revs). I find it revs very low for the gears.
  11. I've been told by Milltek direct that I should gain up to 8bhp with one of their high flow sports cats which isn't bad and they say it will last the same amount of time if not longer than a standard cat. Cost is
  12. Thanks for all your replies. Sounds as though what I am experiencing is normal behaviour then. I didn't think it was that bad. I do have a new MAF sensor so that should be ok and everything runs fine after the first couple of minutes. What does the lambda sensor do exactly? Why does it stay in closed loop while cold? Does it require a certain amount of heat to operate?
  13. Hi Occasionally my car seems lumpy when accelarating when the car is cold, normally in the morning, for the first five minutes. It judders a very small amount for a second or two. It only occurs when I accelarate. After five minutes it accelarates fine. (By accelarate I mean up to a normal running speed - not caning it!) I told Caffyns about it a month ago when I had it serviced but they were pretty useless - they said they'd have to keep it in overnight and test it in the morning. I said no as I needed the car the next day. Anyway after they did the full service it was ok for a while...no
  14. Hi Thanks for your reply. Just had a good look underneath the wheel arch. Can't see any rust under the arch (although a lot of it seems to be plastic) but there was some muck under there but not much, as I tend to wash it every two weeks. I'll get a garage to inspect it better. Thanks.
  15. Hi I have found rust on the base of my petrol filler cap. It is located going round the very base of the petrol filler cap (if that is what it's called - the protruding bit where the cap screws on) next to the rubber seal and just after the screw rails where the cap screws on. I'm not sure if it goes further down underneath the rubber bit. Is this likely to be a major problem or something easy to fix? My car is a 1997 P-reg golf vr6. No rust anywhere else. Thanks for any help. Matt
  16. Hi So far I have only seen brand new superchargers available for the Golf VR6 at prices well over
