    The ABS unit is bolted to the bulk head by the heater matrix hoses / coolant header bottle, ie passenger side. on the, probably, left side of it will be a connector. To undo it pull the two tabs, top and bottom, towards you - may well be very stiff.

    did you test the thermostat once you'd taken it out? your symptoms do sound normal for a car with no thermostat. will effect the mpg efficiency

    Even the VW manual that came with the car, originally ;-) , states they can use 1L per 1000km/miles ( not sure which measure is used ) but your does sound like valve stem seals usual oil is synta silva or fuchs semi synthetic

    my 92 plater has an alloy cover. so some golfs do have 'em ;-) IIRC from when Cabrioman tried to fit a bling one to Sals VR they have different fittings, one uses bolts the other studs - or something like that.
