  1. IIRC: At one end of the plug should be a t shaped piece, pull this to release the lock mechanism. Might need a bit of ummph if it hasn't been off in a while.
  2. Not on a highline. Early models did: maybe OBD1 or maybe only earliest dizzy ones. Either way doesn't effect fitting coilovers. Pain in the backside when changing rear axle bushes.
  3. phew. still not going to change my view of insurance companies though ;-)
  4. I run a mk3 16V coil in mine for a while. All I can think off that the coil life will be reduced as it's having to do 50% more work. But as you say for the difference in price, and availabilty, it's a bit of a none brainer. I suspect that the hall sender from one polo or other might be the same as that in a vr6 dizzy but don't quote me.
  5. One point to mention if you are doing it on an early model. There is a brake balance control valve attached to the rear beam which makes the job alot harder.
  6. I haven't, but a colleague at work keeps recommending it to me as a very entertaining dark comedy. Maybe an xmas pressie idea for my bro
  7. nope, the flashing oil can is oil pressure and if the engine isn't running neither will the oil pump. a joint / junction which is poor when cold can often improve when warm due to slight expansion / drying out sort of things. the problem is quite common but not one applicable to my old VR so my help can only be limited. Have a look through the electrical problems section, or wait for somebody with more knowledge/experience to come along. One drastic solution is to have Stealth or United Motorsport, or whatever Matt is now trading as, remove the immob function from the ECU.
  8. Does sound like the inbuilt ecu immobiliser. Or more specifically the transponder coil near the ignition switch which is supposed to read the chip in the key. how many miles to you do a week? 1L per 1000 isn't unusual, and is fact mentioned in the owners manual.
  9. if they are constructed like standard lights, bake them on a low heat to soften the adhesive and then remove the glass altogether.
  10. 'Tis fun. At Easter my mate came out white and had to sit down for five mins whilst the adrenaline died down.
  11. Do you have a pristine owners manual as well? Think it's in there as well. If so what does it say for a Valver?
  12. a more specific, follow the lights type of thing: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ROLSON-LED-12V-CAR-BATTERY-CIRCUIT-ALTERNATOR-TESTER-/110599080991?pt=UK_Diagnostic_Tools_Equipment&hash=item19c0380c1f Although the description gives all the voltages so you can copy it with a volt meter ;-)
  13. no, it's with the engine off, so it's not getting recharged. A good battery should hold 12V+ whereas one which is having problems holding charge will drop quickly under the strain. The likes of halfords do battery testers for around a fiver. somthing like 600A cold cranking and 65AH
  14. Does sound like a dying battery. what voltage do you get across it if the full beam is on? And how quickly does it fall?
  15. the 2nd pic looks like the bottom of the aux coolant pump. Is it leaking? It can be bypassed, temporarily, or else about £80 from GSF.
  16. physically, yes. more info about lobe size is needed to see if they'll suit. But I'm thinking yes for that too.
  17. do is warn about too many communication errors as it fails to connect?
  18. Is it turning over but failing to catch or is there nothing / just clicking from the starter?
  19. Not that would be classed as Traction Control these days. When pulling away at less than, say, 20kph there is a remedial system to stop the wheels spinning, simply by applying the appropriate brake. For high speed cornering TC you need an after market system like a Race Logic system.
  20. is the oil light a level indicator in the 4mo? In the MK3s it's an oil pressure warning. Given the driving style ( God it must be fun living on the Isle of Man ) I'd say HG
