    VR6 Vs BMW M3

About £12-13k for an S4 2.7 bi-Turbo Quattro on an S or T plate. So a little more expensive than an M3. I just looked on AutoTrader and E36 M3 Evo prices have really come down in the last year. £8-9k for a 70' date='000 miler. I can see now why you're so tempted!! Find a good BMW specialist Independent Mechanic to do your servicing, and you're onto a winner, I reckon. If the prices come down much more, I'll be tempted to pick one up myself, strip it out, rollcage it and use it as a track day toy. VR6 Vs BMW M3

If you're after an E36 3 Series, the M3 Evo (3.2) coupe is the one to go for. Monster quick. Much quicker than a VR6, in fact, it would probably take an R32. The M3 Evo Saloon is a bit heavier, but more stealthy (a good thing imo). These generally cost less to buy too. Avoid the Convertible version at all costs. They are heavier (~0.5 seconds off the 0-60 and worse mpg) and much, much costlier to maintain. Power hoods fail frequently and cost £1500 to put right, testing the rollover protection system adds £150 to every service and then there's the council estate kids with stanley knives t
  3. Yeah, the reading light is on the passenger side on my car too. The driver's side of the lamp unit just contains the switch for the 'leccy sunroof.
  4. I fancy getting one of these VAG-COM kits. Which one would I need for an OBD1 (1994) Golf VR6?. I have the later-type connector, located above the ashtray.
  5. My rear wiper arm has broken and I fancy replacing it with a more modern type to clean up the lines a little. Does anyone know what will fit straight on? Mk5 Polo or something perhaps?. It would need to have an integrated washer nozzle like the Mk3 one does.
  6. An interesting concept, but wouldn't the fan blades form an obstruction in the intake when the motor was switched off? Available charge in the battery would limit the duration of the boost anyway. Sure, this is not a problem for the dragstrip, but a Nitrous kit wouldn't work out much more expensive, and these can produce short bursts of +50 to +100bhp to the Electric Supercharger's +15bhp. Given the potential output of a NOS'd VR6 (especially if already running a Schrick manifold & cams), I'm surprised more people haven't done it. [ Edited Tue Jun 15 2004, 02:58PM ]
  7. Just one question while we're talking about filters though... Does anyone know if the BMC CDA filter needs to be re-olied at intervals like the K&Ns do? How is this done? does the carbon airbox cover have to come off somehow?
  8. Have'nt had experience of all these filters. Have used K&N 57i in the past (on other cars) with good results. Was very impressed with the BMC CDA filter on my VR6. Cold air intake is tricky to fit, but well worth it.
  9. Pump that engine full of air, baby, yeah! :-)
  10. Yep, the Mk5 GTI is gonna be a 2.0 20v T with 200bhp. The tuning options promise to be immense. Can't wait!
  11. My wheel supplier (who's been in the game for years and is very knowledgeable) told me that 8x18" wheels will go on a Mk3 if the offset is right, but the arches must be rolled first. I'm not so sure about tyre choice. You might need 225/35/18s Bear in mind that a 35 or 40 profile tyre gives the rim virtually no protection from potholes, raised manhole covers etc. You will need to learn to dodge these pretty well!!
  12. Trance and US House all the way for me. My MP3 player is stuffed full of Ibiza Euphoria and Hed Kandi compilations. Love it.
  13. This often happens when the MAF sensor gets corroded or caked with residue. My mate's Merc SLK has this exact problem, and I've heard of it hapenning often on VWs too. Get a computer diagnosis done on it. If it's a MAF sensor, this should show up on the report.
  14. Definitely no lumpy idle on my car. Not quite as smooth as standard, but barely noticable. I had a Schrick manifold fitted at the same time as the cams, so I can only comment on the entire package. The most noticable improvement is between 2500rpm and 4000rpm, where the engine revs much more freely. There is no "kick in the back" like you get with FI, the car is just a lot more "eager". There is a bit of a surge after 5000rpm, but nothing like what you'd get with FI or wilder cams. I am seriously thinking about going supercharged next, although this will mean swapping the cams for 248's.
  15. Nice wheels!. You can't beat a set of 5-spoke mags. Especially Porsche ones! Get the arches rolled & pulled, then tuck 'em in there.

    Seats change

Yes, it's just a matter of waiting for a set of leathers to come up. The optional leather interior fitted to some GTI models is the same as that on the VR6 highline. The colour concept interiors have different door cards. Ebay is the best place to look, but Performance VW Magazine Classifieds (http://www.performancevwmag.com/) are pretty good too. I had to wait about 8 months for mine. Expect to pay between £400 and £600, depending on condition and whether or not those all-important door cards are included.
  17. Don't worry about it. I'm so used to my girlfriend giving me grief about looking at / thinking about / talking to / being in the same room as other women, that I'd actually start to worry a bit if she stopped doing it. She's jealous of the car too. [ Edited Thu Jun 10 2004, 11:40AM ]
  18. I have Schrick 264s on my VR. No noticable change to smoothness at idle.
  19. Grooved discs look great behind alloy wheels. That's the whole point of them. There is little performance improvement over standard, but the standard brakes ain't too bad. And not everyone can justify doing £1500-£2000 on a big brake conversion, especially if their engine mods are quite mild. Does anyone know of any larger brakes from Audis etc. which would fit straight on a Mk3 Golf? This would provide a cheaper route to increased brake performance. [ Edited Sat Jun 05 2004, 12:57PM ]
  20. The only really bad place for Mk3 rust is on the tailgate, at the bottom edge of the rear window. A design fault apparently. Later models have a fully galvanised tailgate which works around this problem.
  21. Cool. Good improvisation there, using "Squishy" rubber pipe that could be squeezed between all the aircon bits. Saves all the hammer work that would be needed if you used the supplied aluminium pipe!
  22. That was my only concern. About water getting in. I can't give a definitive answer on that one. I mean, any water would have to work it's way uphill through 2ft of ribbed pipe before it reached the filter. If you ever needed to wade through deep water, though, you would definitely have to stop first and disconnect the cold air pipe from the filter before you went through.
