Thanks guys, just ordered a Bentleys from Amazon - £30

Can anyone recommend a manual that covers the VR6 engine, just so i can try and learn a bit about my car. I have a really annoying intermittent fault at the moment that i feel could well be something very simple ie. loose wire, air pipe or something. I thought id try to do a basic checking over of the engine myself before i spend more money in a garage. Smiths do a book by Peter Russek for about £9, anyone know if this is any good? thanks

Dont mean to be boring, but if youre having a load of problems with the car already, is turboing it and converting to 4wd going to help? Maybe selling up is a better option, especially if youre wanting 4wd. -
Very interesting, i installed a ram-air a few months ago. any chance of some pics so i can check if my problems are being caused by the same thing? Or could you describe exactly where the idle stabilisation valve/ noise damper/ pipes are?

HELP!!!! I WANT TO CHANGE MY VR6,TURBO, ROLL CAGE ETC!!
Macca replied to DUBXX's topic in Engine Maintenance and Problems
Phat, someone told me you turboed a VR6, but said you would never do it again. Is this true? -
Different tyres? The one with better grip will pull you back on that side more(ie left) when you brake, and push you the other way more (ie right ) when you accelerate. Just an idea

This sounds awesome, are u sure its possible? just never heard it before -
Which you wont do without a cat

Im just experiencing exactly the same thing! Sometimes car is fine but sometimes under load the acceleration cuts completely and car 'bucks' badly, press the accelerator and nowt happens, engine keeps running tho. Wait a few seconds and its fine again. I changed the fuel filter yesterday but car is still the same. Got it booked in next week. Let me know how you get on Andy!

Spoke briefly to designa dubs (01256 398998) about turbos. They quoted £3500 + VAT for 350bhp (!) www.designadubs.com But id expect to pay more to have an LSD installed, and put better brakes on, just for starters, to cope with the power. Personally i would only go down this route if i was loaded. A car running 350bhp is always going to be expensive, the fact it wasnt designed to do so isnt going to help IMO. Interesting that stealth say they found it too much hassle! [ Edited Thu May 27 2004, 10:22AM ] -
Ive ordered a couple of times from venom, and theyve been excellent, really quick delivery.

Red looks ok when theyre freshly painted, but they start to look crap when they go grubby. Black or silver work best, and im sure golds good too

Cheapest way to get from 174 to 200bhp..... take a trip to Stealth's rollers!!

Just got to drive my mates elise. Its a fun car, and certainly quick off the mark, feels a bit like driving a roller skate. But it didnt feel much faster than the VR tbh. He tried pulling round me on the dual carriageway but i floored it in 2nd and he wasn't getting round A VR isnt the fastest thing on the road but as a whole package of comfort, build quality, performance and reliability, i really think it takes some beating. Spending 5K on getting it up to 350bhp is seeming more and more like a good idea!

I reckon you do have a point, i can see both sides of it. At the end of the day i think it mostly comes down to do you want to go the usual route, and impress your average Mrs. Bloggs (ooooo... its a BMW), or be understated and different. Not really convinced that you necessarily get more 'bang for your buck' by buying performance off the shelf rather than modify it though. Again.... just my opinion, feel free to disagree

Sorry to hear that mate, take it you are ok (physically). I voted for put it all in a mk2, how about in a mk1 tho? Spose it depends how mashed the car is.......

OK, I need some help, VR6 engine experts chime in please.

After my head gasket was replaced my engine ran like shite. The diagnostic tool showed a fault with the cam position sensor which would have made sense as its a common problem apparently. Took it to a bosch specialist to check all electronics and they said it was all fine. Mechanic that did the head gasket was stumped, as he swore he put the engine back together properly. Anyway he agreed to take it apart as i was getting pissed off, and he had got the cam timing one tooth out. He said he'd aligned TDC by rocking the thing back and forward, the 'old fashioned way', rather than align it properl -
Mines a bit dodgey at idle, find its worse if i dont drive it for a while, and if its on slope. 115k on the clock. Nowt wrong with power tho

Im luvvin those all red lights binliner

Hi tommy. Feel a bit responsible as i was persuading you to get a cone filter! Just to say I have a ram-air and im really pleased with it, great noise! I thought the car did feel a bit different with it on, cant really describe it just felt a bit more 'free'. It also changed the exhaust note a lot i found - much louder and with loads more popping. i have a supersprint system btw. Mine looks different to yours though, its smaller and is a cone shape.

But going on Jule's dyno plot, the schrick does produce less at higher revs. Going by the dyno all it has done is move the power band down the revs, so the high end DOES appear to suffer. Is this right? Im confused.

You dont need any wiring mate, its a piece of cake: wires to the headlights just unclip, and its the same connection on both golf and vento lights.
