acf8181 0
anyone have one, or know of any vr6's at scrappys?its totally given up the ghost today. its just clicking sh*t loads. yesterday it would do that, then suddenly work fine. its also drawing loads of current out the car when its clicking (dash lights go dim, clock resets, passenger window opened for some reason as well!)...but when it started fine yesterday there'd be no probs with dash lights, etc.garage said it was starter, its a bit f**ked up![ Edited ][ Edited ]
six appeal 53
Check that its not just a bad earth mate as had the same problem on my Mk2 and turned out to be bad starter earth and battery.
VR6Andy 0
There is one on e-bay at present,........get it snapped up old lad.
acf8181 0
don't worry sorted now...was the battery as first suspected, damn garages for leading me astray.
six appeal 53
Typical garage, telling you different things ie. most expensive to replace! Glad you got it sorted mate, will keep my eye out for ya now!
acf8181 0
yep, have been blasting around...when i should be scrubing my tyres in carefully...but i can't help it!saw a grey mkIII with a few mods on going down castle hill the other night (i was going up).i have still got issues a couple of issues though...doesn't idle when cold, and idles low after that. and more significantly, all the coolant had dissappeared from the tank the other day (no leaks from what i can see) and its quite 'rusty' looking! dubloke 4
flush the coolant out as its the lifeblood of the vr engine! many a head gasket failure has ensued from contaminated coolant or prolonged coolant changes! vr6 idles quite low anyhow(500-650 is the norm on a reliable engine) and instability at idle could be a number of things , some related to ignition parts, but try the trusted isv valve clean out procedure! it does work wonders on older (sometimes newer models to) models! i could be giving you all the wrong diagnosis here, as someone will no doubt correct, but its all basic maintenance procedure really, whichever manufacturer you're from! good luck andrew anyhow! at least my hose was of use to you if the advice is not! kilokilla 0
sounds like good advice to me dub you also wanna make sure you havnt got any air leaks anywhere mate cos this made my car run awful recently .
acf8181 0
ok, will flush the coolant...isn't there a special drain plug somewhere?whats the procedure for cleaning the ISV?
six appeal 53
ISV can be cleaned using a solvent based cleaner. There is a special drain plg located on the bottom of the pipe at the front of the engine (if I remember correctly its the one from the water pump) Bit of a bitch to remove and refit as needs to be done from underneath the car! See pic:Me trying to remover the drain plug from Mangolds VR without getting soaked!

acf8181 0
anyone know if its really critical what type of coolant/anitfreeze is used ina vr6...cause i just found two big tubs of vauxhall stuff in my garage.be alright won't it?
VRmonster 1
like this you mean. HE-MAN. lol[ Edited Sat Jun 05 2004, 04:05PM ]
acf8181 0
lol[ Edited Sat Jun 05 2004, 10:33PM ]
six appeal 53
LMAO at VR Monster!ACF I do know it is quite critical on Mk2 GTI's as to which anti freeze you use, but not sure on the VR.
mightyvr6 0
Think it's quite important as you don't want to mix 2 incompatible coolants. Some can cause head/block corrosion over time.
VR6Steve 0
My advice would be to stick to VW stuff. Its suposed to have anti corrosives in it which protect the engine. Another one of those, if its good enough for Stealth, its good enough for me situations. :-)
acf8181 0
great, that'll be more getting ripped off a vw!
VR6Steve 0
'fraid so, or try GSF first?
mightyvr6 0
Price of g12 plus is not too bad, about £5 for 1.5 litres from vw.
acf8181 0
how many litres does the vr6 need though?
VRmonster 1
well it will be mixed with water realy wont it. so shouldnt realy use that much. possably half a litre max. (just a guess)
mightyvr6 0
think 1.5 litres is ok for a complete flush out. vr6's have a bigger coolant capacity, says in the manual. Think it's 4.5-5 litre capacity. Mix it 30% -40% antifreeze and use de-ionised water.
acf8181 0
ok, seems better with freash coolant...i guess there was some left in the block when the h/g was changed. i think i've found a leak from the expansion tank as well.gonna clean out the ISV later this week. its the thing under the cover by the TB and damper thing ain't it (i can't be bothered to dig out the bentley!). what do i do just spray some cleaning stuff all over/in it?
