Guest Olly_K
What do you guys think ?Basically i'm thinking of getting rid of the VR in about a year and getting an M3. Will the M3 be as nippy as the vr6 ? i know its heavier, but it has 100 more bhp. Six appeal said he'd been there and done that, did you mean you test drove an M3 and hated it Simon ? Help !It's either an M3 of a sapphy cosworth and to be honest i think the M3 has loads more class.suggestions ?p.s no flaming !
Guest Olly_K
im talking about an old e36 m3 not a £40k new one !
VR6Pete 1,455
come one, cossies are dead and burried! you will never have no money every again and you WILL get pissed of spending on it to keep it running.
vdubgirl 3
Olly you know my views (keep the vr) but if your set on selling it go for the M3 as its more of a classier car than the cossie :-) You dont want a Fix Or Repair DailyFound On Roadside Dumped Ford :-( [ Edited Mon Jun 21 2004, 04:27PM ]
six appeal 53
Had an M3 EVO convertable Olly, and ended up going back to the VR in the end. The M3 was even slower around town and only really came into its own on the Motorway when you hit well into the 3 figures! (In my opinion) As much as I loved it, the bad outwieghed the good and the VR remained and the M3 got moved on. I also thought it would be nice to have a convertable, but just felt like a TW4T driving around with the hard top off and the roof down!Plus If you think its expensive to run a VR you don't even want to think about owning a Cossie or an M3!Mine had BMW FSH and only 42,000 when it went, and later found out the guy needed to spend over £2.5 k for his next service! VAMOS unit failed (£1200, common fault on the M3) and the clutch got gradually worse going into reverse when the car was even remotely warm! (£800) Plus another £500 just for the service! I was so glad it went when I heard that!Plus the insurance on a cossie and M3 is a joke! I think if I upgrade I'll be going for something in the S or RS range of Audi's.As for Coissies I have a friend who is a die hard enthusiast and has a Sapphy and an RS500. But the money they cost him to run and maintain is ridiculous! Even he admits that they are no longer usuable as every day cars as they are getting old now, and the bits are getting very rare! But if your minds set on it then get it out ya system as you only live once! 28v6r 0
Yep! Olly listen to the guys...Don't do it! I have a 735 BMW and the unwanted attention it brings isn't worth having, inluding 4 flat tyres, Kids Continually leaning on it/touching it, to kids wanting to set its alarm off!! ~ then theres the price of parts! Treble the price of VR parts, and Oh! did I mention the "fake" Economy whereby the handbook states "X" and you can get no where near it despite changing all the parts MAF/Dizzy/Rotor Arm/Injectors/ Fuel regulator/ etc etc . I had an Audi 200 Turbo Quattro with a professionally rebuilt engine to 270bhp and the fuel economy on that if you were off boost was amazing, granted if you were tramping on, fuel went quickly but over all the Audi wins hands down, that's why I'm currently selling the Bimmer in favour of an S8 with all the toys!!!Stick to what you already know a bit about rather than play with something that will only cos' you and the Mrs grief & heartache.. The Choice is yours........ %-
Guest Olly_K
hmmmm interest views and comments guys/girls. thank you ! Simon thats a seriously nice m3 there, although I too would only want a coupe version. So basically you think the vr would be quicker off the line than an m3 ? I can imagine the M3 going DEEP into 3 figures actually, and i know economy is going to be bad. But i looked at some pictures of one today and I seriously wouldnt change anything on it, maybe the m3 rear lights if it already didnt have them (not all did, apparently). Dont get me wrong guys, i love my vr, the noise, the torque etc etc, but my need for speed (acceleration, more than anything) is getting the better of me !Its a long way off. I got quote 2.2k fully comp on one today through elephant, so i'm sure that in a year being a year older and another years no claims (fingers crossed) will put me in better stead.I really need to drive one, but i'm not going to waste anyones time yet as i wouldnt be able to buy it just yet ! Eat this 2
how bout a 4.2 s4 i like the look of them very muchly o yes
six appeal 53
Yeh Olly, you can't deny they are a great looking car especially in some of the dark metallic colours, I preferred the look of the convertable when the hard top was on (nice pillarless coupe then!)I recon my VR would easily give the M3 a run to 70mph in a straight line as they are heavy (especially the conv.) But after that they are awesome and will pull well passed 150 and still feel very stable (alledgedly officer ;o) lol). Around town they are just not suited to it, same as the VR, and any sorted little hot hatch will give them a pasting around town! But they are a lot of fun especially being rear wheel drive )But if its acceleration you are after go for something light, turbo'd and preferably with 4 wheel drive!
mina 0
Decisions decisions!! M3 is ultimately a quicker car and eats VR's on a track - but it's a different story in the wet. Just not sure I could live with all the attention and the number of M3 badged 318i Coupes!!Servicing costs are a nightmare and the throttle butterflies constantly need realigning.Mina

acf8181 0
E36 M3 wil decimate a vr6...simple as that.
VRmonster 1
not in the lower range surely. and how often do you get to do 150mph without fear of having your pink one taken off you.[ Edited Mon Jun 21 2004, 06:35PM ]
Eat this 2
oooooooeeeeeeeeeeeeer vrmonster lol
Guest Olly_K
thats a good point monster. I get that in mine when i get into 3 figures. but surely a flat 6 as opposed to a v6 must have more torque than a vr low down aswell ? m3's have VANOS which is like VVTI (which is like the shrick vsr) so i would imagine it would be torquey. but it is heavier. thats why i'd like to drive one. i agree with the "once an M3 stretches it's legs, it will kill a VR" statement, but i want it to be nippy as well !
acf8181 0
a vr6 ain't exactly nippy at low rpms...m3 is not gonna be worse.
Eat this 2
i thought v gave more torque than straight or flat and vthe vr isnt much of a v anyway and no its not hugely quick at 2-3500 k
Eat this 2
it does feel torqey as hell 1-2k though realy strong

gazbrook 0
the only M3 i have been in that i thought would kill a VR6 start to finish was a Z3 with M3engine in, the Z3 roadster or Z3M something like that(not sure of the proper name), the lad i know who drives it was doing about 120 maybe a bit over on a 40 road, i thought i was going to die!!! Eat this 2
m coupei think its called its got less power than an m3
Eat this 2
somethin to do with the exhaust not fitting in poperly i think the m coupe has 280 bhp where the m3 has 320 i think
mina 0
I've driven a E36 M3, with over £6k worth of AC Schnitzer mods, at Silverstone, Croft and Cadwell - it's all about the 50/50 weight distribution and RWD.The engine doesn't pull that strongly below 3500rpm, but it's deceptively quick above that. There's no denying BMW know how to make an engine - it's basically half what they put in the McLaren F1!!Mina
