  1. I'm afraid in the end I sold the car to be broken, I replaced virtually everything, got a spare ecu and it still didn't work then had both ecus tested only to find the chip was blown in both and couldn't justify a new or aftermarket ecu at the time. Now I'm building a mk1 Vr and hoping the ecu for this one is good. Sorry I couldn't be more help and say that it was just something I overlooked. Tom
  2. I've been having problems with my vr for quite some time now with it cutting out randomly, but the other week it finally cut out and wouldnt start at all.The problem now is neither i nor the aa can get a reading from the ecu through vagcom etc. and through testing components all roads seem to lead back to ecu trouble. Does anyone know of anywhere that i can get my ecu tested or of what ecu i can use to replace mine with as i cannot find any with the exact same part number as mine: 021 906 258af I can find ones that match everything bar the last two letters and do not know their significance
  3. Also replaced the dizzy because of broken cables to the cam position sensor, the dizzy cap, rotor arm, leads, plugs, ecu relay, fuel pump relay, think theres more cant remember, rubbish eh?
  4. Thats the same as the crank sensor isn't it? have already replaced this twice so far, so could be but i dont think so cos the new one hasnt been on very long.cheers fella hopefully shouldnt need it but will let you know.
  5. Are the fans cutting in?Mine were'nt always cutting in but didnt catch it soon enough, did this for a while before it caused terminal damage to head gasket.
  6. I seem to have no end of problems with my OBD1, but have seemingly traced the source of all my cutting out and starting problems roughly, just need ideas and maybe a bit of help because its started to get harder to test and find faults. Have so far replaced almost every electrical part on the engine that can affect running and still no joy. Traced a lack of spark at the plugs back to the coil and replaced it, 185quid later and the engine still has no spark from the new coil. Here's where it gets frustrating, because the wires from the 3 pin plug on the coil being pretty much the only thing lef
  7. The crank sensor/engine speed sensor needs to be checked when the engine is running otherwise you will get a false reading, as when the engine is switched off this will always show as a fault.
  8. Have you checked the rocker cover gasket as mine was leaking and filling all my spark plug holes with oil. A new gasket and some silicon sump sealant works a treat.
  9. My local gsf are a bit useless but TPS are wicked namely richie off here, definitely knows his stuff!
  10. Don't know the exact differences but the galaxy one has less power, so i presume different cams at least. the block itself and head are definitely identical, so are the mounting points. The alternator on them is better than the golf's.
  11. I have already seen this, but the listing says its damaged, so i'm waiting to find out how it is damaged before buying it. cheers mate tom
  12. Hi guys, have finally managed to trace the faults with my car to the cam position sensor. Unfortunately i have an aerly mk3 vr on a dizzy, and the sensor is in the dizzy, and as of two months ago the dizzy was discontinued by vw and there are none in stock anywhere. Therefore i have got to convert everything to coilpack, and was hoping someone might be able to help me with ecu numbers, as my car is currently obd1 and has no immobiliser built in to the keys, and i was hoping that if i convert it to obd1 on a coilpack rather than obd2 the ecu will still have no built in immobiliser.but i dont r
  13. Hi guys vr still shagged, cuts out, or trys to at least on every journey no matter how short or long. And it no longer idles properly again. can idle anywhere between 0 and 1200rpm. Everything is clean and should be working properly, vagcom isnt throwing up any faults. stumped, checked maf connections not corroded. Died pretty spectacularly on the way home from work on saturday, first accelerate hard... 2nd roar off down the road... 3rd still accelerating hard hit 80 and everything just stops nose dives. dash lights up like a christmas tree... change down as its slowing trying to kick it back
  14. Still having running problems with the vr. Cuts out totally and battery light comes on, but at no particular time, it can do it while idling or while driving gently,or accelerating hard. Have now also replaced ecu relay just in case, but clutching at straws really. Have been plugging it in almost constantly to vagcom. Havent had any faults for a few weeks even when i check immediately after it cuts out. Any ideas guys? i'm totally stumped! *-)
  15. For the last 6 months or so my vr has been cutting out randomly during idle and whilst running at any revs or speed. It cuts out very violently and almost instantly turns back on if moving and when idling just turns off. Sometimes it cuts out and the engine speed/revs/momentum bring it back to life or if it dies completely it can be turned back on straight away and sometimes it takes 5 or 10 mins to turn back on and I have absolutely no idea whats causing it, i have tested the fuel pump, cleaned maf and isv, all earths checked and cleaned up, tidied most wiring, cleaned out full induction syst
  16. 6 injectors, one for each cylinder mate. You've got a distributor and coil and the later models had a coilpack instead.
  17. I've currently got bridgestone potenza so2 pole position's and they stick like s**t on a shovel, though was thinking about getting GSD3's or T1R's when i next replace them as have heard good things about them, and the potenza's are quite expensive on 16s.
  18. Holy cow that is immense, shame those lumps are so expensive to get hold of compared to older vr lumps
  19. I did indeed accidentally, didnt realise until i had some 30 odd replies to one pm :$
  20. I would definitely be up for this, so long as richie is up for helping me sort my vr out. :-p
