  1. Only when engine's running or just when ignition's on?
  2. Unlucky! I'd advise Main Dealer for bearings - various posts I've read on this site say that folks have had a short & bad time with some 3rd party bearings. Not sure if that's got anything to do with your problem though. Good luck...
  3. Zonda, this is probably technically a 'Hijack' but how much is your LPG conversion going to cost and where from? Similar engine performnance expected afterwards? This interests me because I'm always harping on about green issues, yet I drive a proper fuel guzzler! Is LPG less polluting than petrol?
  4. What make of bearings did you put in? / where from? Some of the aftermarket ones have a tendancy to be very soft compared to what you get from VW. If you've had your alignment done recently there shouldn't be a problem with the car tracking strangely. 16" wheels shouldn't cause too much stress on the bearings - they obviously aren't mega-wide, so unless your alignment is way out then they should be fine. Sounds a bit weird to me...
  5. I'd say O2 sensor probably knackered, but get it vag commed and it'll show you whether the other sensors are off the rails. Make sure you get the vag com bloke to write ALL the fault codes down before resetting them.
  6. Synta silver's good for mine. Never needs to be topped up
  7. You've probably got a dodgy wheel speed sensor. First try pressurewashing behind your wheels - maybe this will do the trick if it's just brake dust (works on mine every now & then). If no joy either clean them all individually, or get your fault codes read at a vw garage or someone with a vag com. That will tell you which one's faulty and you can get it replaced.
  8. Not really a conflict - it's all personal taste really. I feel like mine could use a bit more rear arb, and the front's fine as standard. However, I'm not a regular track day driver - just after a bit more tail happiness. Since getting some decent shocks, decent tyres, and some alignment the car seems much better behaved than when I got it. Still fancy that rear bar though. Was quite interested in adjustable neuspeed or whiteline just in case it makes too much difference...
  9. Aswad, a while ago I was looking into getting an Eibach rear arb but not a front one (as they normally try to flog them as a pack of 2). I think emailed Eibach who gave me the details of their UK distributor, then I called/emailed him and he sent me the list of re-sellers, and the actual part number of the rear-only arb pack. Sorry I have lost the details, but if you're struggling to find someone to sell you the rear-only then this is the way I'd go....
  10. Do you know what viscosity oil you are running?
  11. Holy mousse mate - idling at 6500 rpm - what sort of mods you running? ;-) Is there some kind of engine speed sensor used by the ECU to know when it's idling - possibly on the cam - "hall sender"? Maybe that needs cleaned / replaced. Someone else should butt who is usre about this, but I'm just remembering things from other threads...
  12. yeah air temp makes a fair difference too!
  13. My driving is done mostly round town from week to week, and then involves ragging it 100 miles + on the motorway and then country roads for a weekend away every couple of weeks. After a good blast on the motorway it is noticably more eager - and especially seems to pull harder from low revs. Sounds a bit throatier too. After a week or two of commuting in 30mph zones it's back to feeling like it could use a good blast to get it's cobwebs blown clear. Constantly up and down. I'm sure this is just a result of the way I use it though. My old 8v Mk2 GTi was exactly the same. I haven't spanked any o
  14. They do, but you'll find the 195 width are quite a bit cheaper, plus they don't look as 'fat' as 205's. I'm not the only one that thinks 205 tyres look a bit wide on the standard 15" rims... I reckon the 195's will effectively be a little bit stiffer walled on these wheels, plus they will be less likely to aquaplane. Then again, they will wear down 5% more quickly (becasue there's 5% less rubber involved), but it's your choice. They are cracking tyres whatever width or pressure you decide upon.
  15. No worries lads - glad to be of service. Cant wait to get the VR on the 'ring ! ;-)
  16. Now then now then, I had the exact same 'problem' with mine for several months after I got it. I only use this when I'm following an oil burner or a farmer has just spread chicken $hit and it reaks. Although on a really hot day it might be useful to help cool the car down rapidly. I fixed it by accident - I was well chuffed though! I was having a cursory under bonnet inspection and found one of those pneumatic tubes was disconnected, as it leads into the bulkhead between the engine bay and the cabin. This tube's about 5mm wide by the way. As far as I can remember it is more or less central bu
  17. mad mick - mine says the same as yours. I like more on the front than the back because it makes the handling a little different. I'm not sure what car the sticker on matth76's filler cap was intended for, but those pressures (26/28) seem very low to me. If I have mine fully loaded I put yet more air in the back.
  18. matth76 - I think you're going to like to hear this. I am running 15" wheels too - the standard ones. When I got the car it had 205/50r15 rubber. Now I am running 195/50r15 Eagle F1 GSD3's from blackcircles.com - I got them for just over £200 fitted, balanced & tracked. The 195 width are an unusual size and unusually cheap (at least they were at Christmas). The F1's are awesome tyres by the way - cut through puddles, preductable in the wet and fantastic in the dry. I have my pressures set to 40psi front and 33 rear and the steering has sharpened up nicely. Oh and if you're bothered about
  19. Mine are 195/5015's on standard highline alloys (not sure what the actual size is), and I find 40psi on the front and 33 on the rear makes the car behave nicely. No shortage of grip in any conditions so far.
  20. I've got standard springs on mine, and 15" wheels, with koni yellow shocks on the front and Eagle F1's all round. These are the best tyres I've ever used. After some experimentation I have settled on the pressure on the front tyres up at 40psi and the rear set to 33psi. I know they will wear, but who cares, really? The front shocks are set to half/half stiffness. It's comfortable on the motorway and the nose really tucks in now when you hustle it round some corners - I'm well impressed. I thought I would need a fat arb on the back to make the difference, but the tyres (&pressures!) combine
  21. Well that all sounds good to me. Even if mine did have one at some point then it was probably part of the tailgate glass, which may have been replaced at some point I suppose. The old fella that had the car before us tended to fix things as cheaply as possible - one tire at a time, one shock at a time... Still, I'd prefer to think of it as never having one. I know highlines are supposed to be 'loaded' but this brake light presumably isn't part of the package in all cases!
  22. JUst had a thought. My '97 VR has no tailgate brake light. Is this normal or should I be suspicious that the car has some hidden history ? I don't really care if it's there or not - but I'd like to know just to be sure about the pedigree.
  23. I can manage 34 at a very steady 60mph or so. Usually get 20-23 on 6 mile daily commutes in south london, and I try to drive as gently as possible around town most of the time. On motorway runs I struggle to get 30mpg - usually about 27, 28 or so. On my favorite piece of road I get 12-14 mpg - uphill, twisty, and blindingly quick !
  24. Rambling little story for anyone who's interested. Had a long drive back to London on Tuesday evening. Left parents in Cumbria at 5pm, and was back at their place half an hour later, having abandoned a shortcut to the M6 through very slippery country roads. Managed to get stuck in the bottom of a 'dip' with fairly steep hills either side. Ice covered with snow is not something that Eagle F1s pick up much grip on! Trying to get out of the dip, after doing a beautiful spin at 5 mph sliding backwards back into it (no damage luckily!), trying to reverse out for extra traction, then resorted to re
