  1. I have the same symptoms too, real heavy breathing through the breather, after doing a compression test it looks like my bottom end is dead, might be able to save it with a overbore and 2.9 pistons as suggested by you. As suggested get a compression and leak test done, should point you in the right direction
  2. Well got a bit more done today, front section off Found that one of the previous owners had cut threw this for some reason Bit of wiring loom off and it looks like this Two bolts and a couple of hose clips and this came off Nice empty space
  3. Sorry I was wondering if there were any proven numbers on the 2.9 conversion, that's all, as all I had heard was 2.9 odb2 corrado's go really well but never heard about the exact gains. It sounded by your knowledge you might know. As for rebuilding my bottom end, looks like if my block is damaged I will go down the 2.9 route
  4. Thanks for all the comments and discussion So I can get some used 2.9 pistons and make an odb2 2.9 what's the gains? Thanks will bear that in mind, will speak to the machine shop once I get the engine apart (hopefully next week) I doubt I will be going with low comp pistons as they will add so much to the build, because then I will go turbo and this car is just my daily, if it was anything else it would be different, but I have a mk2 polo that I am building for my bit of fast road fun :-)
  5. Well about time I started working on the car, need to see how bad things are!!! so then engine as I started Hello mr charger, notice the maf inbetween charger and throttle body, not the best set up Anybody any ideas what this blue plug is supposed to go to? I thought it was charcoal canister as I have an error code with it, but further investigation revealed it's still there... Also this second black plug by the throttle body? Pulled a fog light out..... No wonder my fogs didn't work!!! Bit of searching, oh look here looks like a fog light bulb, still connected!!! Still on drivers side
  6. Ah didn't know you could use standard 2.9 pistons in it. Thanks for the info about the torque plate never heard of it before. Was wondering about fancy pistons, but no point with a sc setup, so would really mean going turbo on her, which is a bit much for a daily car. Think I will try and keep her fairly standard, might get away with a hone and new piston rings, if not it looks like finding some decent 2.9 pistons and an overbore. Do you know how much I have to get it bored to?
  7. Ok I have established my bottom end is now dead, low compression and possible bore wash. Now what are my options? It's going on a stage 2 charger build with cams Standard rebuild, with slight overbored? 2.9 rebuild with forged pistons? Is it worth using forged pistons on a standard build? Should I lower the compression whilst I am at it?
  8. If your wanting around 300 bhp you could get a stage 2 vf kit, with cams should see those numbers, no need for an intercooler or charge cooler either
  9. Wait for a second hand kit to turn up, usually one or two a year pop up, go for between £1250 and £2000 I will have a stage 1 kit for sale soon, might have a stage 2 kit for sale too soon as I might go turbo now
  10. Results are in from the garage today and it's not good news Well it's breathing heavy through the crankcase breather Compression test 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 175. 142. 138. 172. 159. 161 Leak test 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 50%. 55%. 65%. 20%. 20%. 20% And when testing it was leaking so badly it was coming back through many different point and other cylinders when doing it So it's pretty fecked. Think I might get another bottom end and build it up, guess how far do I got, 2.9 overbore? forged bottom end? L
  11. Well it's breathing heavy through the crankcase breather So took it for a compression test and 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 175. 142. 138. 172. 159. 161 Leak test 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 50%. 55%. 65%. 20%. 20%. 20% And when testing it was leaking so badly it was coming back through many different point and other cylinders when doing it
  12. Well things have escalated now, got a dead bottom end too :-( I could do some of the refresh myself, but it needs skimming, so might get it all done together :-)
  13. It was just under a grand too, includes chains, headgasket kit, head bolts, thermostat bits and polo gear change bit conversion bits. Still need to get tappets which i have found a nice cheap place to get INA ones and the second hand gearbox cables. Hopefully that will bit it then, apart from the head rebuild. This rebuild is looking to cost me a hell of a lot!!! Oh well you can't take it with you
  14. Well TPS popped round this morning :-) Should keep me busy for a few days
  15. Nobody recommend a machine shop around here to work on my VR head??
  16. Well more progress today. Booked the car in on Tuesday for a leakdown test and a compression test, hopefully tell me if anything is up with the engine anyway. I am looking to get the head rebuild anyway but don't want to find out I have an issue with the bottom end once complete. That's a point, can anybody recommend a decent machine shop to sort my head out, hopefully local to me, Reigate in Surrey J8 M25?? So in other progress today had to clear some space to work on the car.... Well this was in the way, one of my other projects (waiting for new engine, paint, interior and suspension) I
  17. Well another day another package.... Not a big one, but a rather important one to make things a little easier And one some parts that arrived a couple weeks ago, after a clean and some paint they will look much better Just need United Motorsport to call me back and I can spend some more monies :-)
  18. I got them from amber performance, they aren't cheap as I got a few extra pipes for the oil cooler and the hose clip set, think it was around £300
  19. Currently (when no fault codes) it drives pretty well, like a vr with a bit more urgency, how they should have been out the box really. It's quick but not fast fast if that makes sense. Very linea power delivery You might have trouble sourcing the missing bracket of yours though, have you tried calling vince to see if he has one spare?
  20. Another day, another package Go these as is had trouble with the ones going to the heater matrix as the previous owner fitted a stainless manifold and didn't wrap it, making the already old rubber pipes perish much faster. Surprisingly the whole kit was cheaper than replacement ones from vw, though as mentioned before i did find cheap replacements from vw heritage if anyone needs any
  21. Well after my chat with vince yesterday, these arrived today Should work well with this I have been sitting on a while Now this is a stage 2 supercharger set up, to replace the current stage 1 setup the car is running. Should see the car push out over 285bhp once all fitted :-) Lots more bits to arrive in the next few days. I am also sitting on quite a few parts I have been collecting for the last few months
  22. When I was speaking to stealth yesterday they said they did the same thing so no real point in both, i was enquiring as I was looking at getting a VGI inlet, but they convinced me otherwise What sort of power are you running with both??
  23. Also aren't you running a vsi manifold or have you sold that now?
  24. I have just picked some schimels up from stealth for what I thought was a very reasonable £432 to my door. Yes might be able to get some cheaper elsewhere, but saves the hassle of importing and waiting too, plus if anything goes wrong you know vince (or John in my case) will be there to sort the issues out
  25. Fancy retrims done right are good, this was botched from the outset, edges not fitted right, trim bits not put in the right places, then lots of bits held on with double sided sticky tape hiding bits that simply didn't fit. My fault partly as lots of the problems were there when I purchased the car, but either I couldn't see them (hidden), I didn't notice in the 30 min look round the car or at the time I thought they weren't too bad..... Just when you start adding them up, there are a lot of issues. The stage 1 charger set up, I think is a z engineering set up
