Full Closure Alarms - Golf VR6 - a warning !!!!

Recommended Posts

sounds stupid but was working on my car and set the closure alarm (factory fitted Thatcham 1 job) - the drivers window automatically closed and i (bizarrely !) got my arm caught between the window and door frame near the wrist - i couldn't believe that the motor was continuing to try and shut the window and the force on my wrist caused me to lose all circulation into my hand meaning the hand contracted on its on ! i tried to reverse the alarm but the window still kept pressing - no joke the force of it was quite unbelieveable and i could not release my arm at all - got it sorted by a neighbour coming round and prising it away using 2 screwdrivers ....... made me realise how dangerous these things can be (if you're stupid enough to get ure arm in the way !!)

oh that's not good, i'd best check mine before the kids chop each others heads off with it, was a new alarm i had put on a couple of months ago so am hoping it has anti-death features included.

I think it will not close normally if something is obstructing the window but on full closure you dont really want to walk away from you car and activate the alarm and it not shutting all the windows because somebody has put there arm in there when your back is turned....

Very true, a guess the best idea would be to chop off the arm of anyone who tried to obstruct the window, so with that in mind it works perfectly!!

I remember speaking to my local alarm fitters (who have done alarm installs on my last three cars) about this very issue.

All three systems were total closure, and on all of them I have had to physically hold down a special button on the remote to get the windows to wind up after locking. I asked the fitters if it was possible to have the windows wind up automatically after locking the car so I could just press one button and walk away. They said that setting it up in this way INVALIDATES the Thatcham 1 approval of the system, due to the safety issues - people getting arms caught in the windows and secondly dogs getting left in a hot car with no ventilation. This makes sense, I suppose.

If what my fitters told me is correct. you could have problems with an insurance claim if your insurers inspect the car and find the total closure to be working in the way you describe.

cheers sanky - hand still a bit iffy but should get the feeling back eventually ! i still cant believe the force behind the window ........ on the Thatcham 1 issue thats an interesting point as my alarm is a factory fitted conlog (?) system which has the cat 1 bit ticked on the installation certificate - luckily my insurance only asks if an alarm is fitted (not whether Cat 1 etc) so shouldn't be a problem though certainly worth considering for the future !
