Ok.... I was under the impression that 1 fan runs all the time when the engine starts?

I've just had my air con re-charged and that's shown up a problem where as by one of the fans dont kick in, and when the car reaches above 90 degrees on my clocks both fans kick in and my air con compressor, what could cause this to happen? my air con used to always work (and 1 fan used to always run) from the moment i turned the key, but not both fans kick in at the same time (and air con compressor) after the engine has got hot)

Any idea?

Cheers :)

Assuming we're talking about the two fans speeds and not the number of them (connected with a belt as Sixappeal says), speed one comes on at 90 or thereabouts (IIRC) and speed two comes on at 100, along with the secondary water pump. The fans should not be on when you start the car from cold, but then again, that is true of a non-air conned car, so I'm not too sure what air conned engines do to be honest. I know my mate's Rado VR6 with air-con doesn't have the fans on when started in the morning.

Sorry, that's all I can offer as I don't have air-con. Hope it helps in some small way anyway!

kev-when you say secondary water pump i'm presuming thats the auxiliary water pump, and i thought that it runs all the time, even when the engine isn't running? can you confirm this? also, does anyone know how much they are to replace as i think mine is on the way out as its started making odd noises since i changed my hoses?

auxilliary water pumps run all the time the ignition is on, they also run when the engine is turned off in conjunction with the electric cooling fan if the temperature is still too hot to prevent overheating once the engine has stopped. They are about £70 from VW which from memory was at least £10 cheaper than German and Swedish

ok, just reading up...so will be updating this post as sson as i learn somethin new.

for starters, the vr6 has a three speed fan (two fans tho, linked as said already), the third speed is for when the engine has just been switched off...to control under bonnet temps.

crikey...this is seriously complicated! i'm too tired to understand now, but pete, check you mail.
