Therusterman 59
I'm planning on sorting out an oil leak in the next few weeks, among them is the sump. I took it off last year to do the wishbone and was told as my engine was produced after 255785 I would only require sealant, no gasket. Does anyone know if there is any particular reason for this? And would I create a problem using both sealant and gasket?
mrslippery22 2
I don't know much about working on vw but if I were you I would use a gasket so you don't run into leaks in the futureSent from my VS930 4G using Tapatalk

Therusterman 59
That's what I'm leaning towards, just can't understand why VW went from using a gasket to a sealer instead?!
mrslippery22 2
Idk I had to replace my thermostat housing and it had that sealer on it and it leaked like crazy. Sent from my VS930 4G using Tapatalk
mrslippery22 2
The only reason I can think of for using that sealant is if you used it and the gasket Sent from my VS930 4G using Tapatalk

abvsean 32
If its two machined flat surfaces then sealant only can be used.If its two different surfaces (machined block to ribbed sump,ally-steel) then a gasket is used. although i have gotten away with sealant before it just depends on how much you put on! Reaperx 181
Not many use a gasket anymore the majority of sumps that I have done are sealant. As long you clean the area you Should be ok I have never had any leaks. And leave it for at least 24 hours to set before putting oil in

That's the kind of info i'm looking for, many thanks. The block is machine flat, but the sump has some perforations going around it, will grab a gasket and some sealant and give it a try. MK4motionVR6 41
Here's the part No. for the correct sealant from VW/TPS only use this on machined surface alloy sumps! It's specified for use throughout the VAG vehicles, as it's sensor friendly!! But take care not to over do it when applying, you only need a 2-3mm beed around the matting surface.. If you apply too much, the excess may break off inside the sump & clog the oil pick up strainer..Part No. D 176-404-A2 comes in 80mg tube. Here's a link to an online manual..http://workshop-manuals.com/volkswagen/gti/v6-2.8l_(bdf)/engine_cooling_and_exhaust/engine/engine_lubrication/oil_pan_engine/component_information/specifications/page_1760/Mk4motionVR6 Edited May 1, 2014 by MK4motionVR6
Therusterman 59
Thanks for that mate. Just so happens I ordered some sealant last night. VW wanted nearly £25 for a tube, but managed to find an aftermarket equivalent made by a crowd called Dirko.
Lukey. 381
halfords have loctite black which has just the same specs side by side
Therusterman 59
That's what I used last time, just thought this stuff may work slightly better. Or maybe I should put more care and effort into sealing metal mating surfaces.
MK4motionVR6 41
It's up to you guys.. But the best one on the market to use is the VW stuff... The others are pretty good, but they take much longer to dry & are of a thinner composite to the VW sealant. If you go to TPS you'll get it for around £18, or just be a little cheeky & ask nicely at the dealer for some discount... They may give it to you for £19 trade Mk4motionVR6 Therusterman

paceo 22
so they dont do a actual gasket for the vr6 then? just mucky sealant?
Therusterman 59
There is a gasket available, but this is for engines produced up to number 255785. I can only assume the sump may of been slightly different?
