My ABS has been doin me 'ead in! The light comes on and stays on when you drive at approx 15-20 mph (don't know exactly what speed as the speed o aint to accurate at lower speed?!). I can switch ignition on and rev the arse out the car - no abs light. I can drive off and keep going at low speed - no abs light. As soon as i get over a certain speed (approx 15-20mph) the abs light comes on! Garage says i need a new abs pump unit, but i aint convinced. My thinking is that it could be the relay. The traction control only works at speeds up to 20mph(i think) and on obd1 the EDL (traction control) is the only relay which is monitored by the OBD. So before i go out and spend hundreds i'm gonna replace the £12 relay. Gotta be worth a try! What do you guys think the problem could be? :?

Had the codes read at garage... in the 2 years i've had the car i've been told of various faults which disappear once the system is reset, so i'm not convinced the diagnostics are 100% on the car. Code read said the abs unit was faulty... very costly. I've also been told that the brake pedal position sensor was faulty when it wasn't. If replacing the relay doesn't solve this i'm gonna take the abs bulb out, never had the abs come on anyway (yet!). IMO it aint worht spending hundreds of pounds getting it fixed.

i had exactly the same when i had my rear discs + pads changed ,turned out that the abs ring (can't remember the correct name for it) was knackered , i think the garage knackered it getting it off the old disc instead of getting new ones,

well, the diagnostics accuracy is only as good as the person using it....IMO the best thing to do is sit with the guy, get him to check the codes (and note them down), then delete the lot. then take the car for a drive making sure it does the problem you're trying to cause during this drive, then recheck the codes. oh, and always check them with the engine on. that way you can discount the one-off codes that may have been logged due to a mechanic disconnecting something when trying to get to something else.

I had similar problems like you:

1) ABS comes one and "springy" noise from the pedals.

Then I had it diagnosed on VAG com at my local independent.

"rear right calibration error" something like that, so had the follwowing changed

1) rear right ABS sensor - ABS still came on

2) Left rear ABS sensor replaced - ABS still came on

ABS wired re-seated and errors cleared

3) Disc ringgs replaced - same error

After the 4th visit, the garage said it was the ABS ECU, which was a main dealer part at almost $£500

Replaced ABS ECU.. no more errors..

Good luck mate
