[moved] [moved] new brake system!

Recommended Posts

ok, so i tried to bleed the brakes up after fitting the remote servo, and noticed that the front calipers were nackered, the bleed nuts had been sheered off inside tho hole, and rusted to hell so not removable. (daft garage i got my MOT done at must have broke em when replacing some brake pipes.)

DAY 1

anyway, i got a quote of £350 from a local VW specialist to replace the front calipers, discs, pads and bleed the brakes up, i also asked for a new handbrake cable cos it was dead. lol

after some fun trying to drive it onto a flatbed trailer and sliding off the back a few times. (the winch was broken, and with no brakes or handbrake and muddy tyres i was struggling to stay on) i managed to get it to the garage.

after they called me and told me id not left the locking nut for the wheels and id went home from work and dropped it off, they called to tell me one of my rear calipers was seized. bugger. theres another £30

DAY 2

they have fitted the front calipers all round and sorted the handbrake cable out,(as far as i know) i get a call telling me the rear caliper that has seized is the old type, and the newer mk3 type was fitted to the other side. i was told they need to order the newer one in so i said yes just to keep them the same. expecting to pick the car up tonight, i called to see how they were doing, they now tell me the master cylinder must have been fully compressed during fitting (which it may have) as they couldnt bleed the fronts up, so they suspected the seals in the master cyl. now the VR master cylinder is £120 from VW and not many other places stock em, yet the 16v is the same size but is only £40 and due to me having the remote servo, could have the 16v one fitted, but they were waiting for delivery of the part. hopefully they managed to finish that tonight so i can pick her up tomorrow dinnertime and have a nice relaxing drive home in my fresh brake'd VRT.

why is my life with cars so shite.

well, just to update, there was something that went wrong today, so i still dont have the car. the master cylinder seal has deffo gone so the had to order the part, on researching, the 16v one has different outlets so only the VR6 would be of use. and thats £145, and apparently only VW supply them. that has been ordered and wont be there till tomorrow morning. so again, hopefully i will have my car on the road for the weekend. lol.

and i went for the standard 280mm brake setup as im going for 15" wheels so thought ill leave it as is and get some uprated disks if i manage to warp these, i got greenstuff pads so hopefully i wont kill these discs this time. plus, although i will have a lot more power i cant imagine me going any higher speeds than i used to, and i cant imagine me driving up anyones arse anymore than i used to so i think the 280s should suffice.

omg, when i got to the garage they told me the bill was £760. what the *^&%. have i been had or does that sound fair.

2 new front calipers

1 new rear caliper

1 new VR6 master cylinder

standard discs and pads all round

2 handbrake cables

1 rotor arm (i friggin snapped mine, lol)

and bleed the brakes up.

i know there is a lot of parts and a lot of work, but still £700 breaks my heart. i could have got some brembos for that.

how the hell did u do that much dmg thats pretty much everythin youch

it wasnt really damage, but the 2 front calipers had the bleed nipples sheared off the last time they were bled, so wont be going back to that garage, lol. and the rear caliper had seized with the car sitting around for so long. and then theres a new handbrake etc which i done just because it was having work done. then all the discs n pads were very rusted so thought may as well replace em.

overspent really, could have just driven with no brakes. i barely use em anyway. lol.

i now have to take it back to the garage as the pedal has become a little spongy so either it still has air in it or something is wrong. should get it done for free though.

  • 1 month later...

id just installed a turbo kit, and had my fair share of problems, i installed all of the pipework for the remote servo, and was ready to bleed the brakes up, then realised the bleed nipples were fooked, so id had enough of the problems. just thought "let someone else take on the burden" lol. im also not too keen on doing the brakework myself, engines can blow up with only the risk of fire really, but brakes... id end up shiney side down in a ditch, lol.

yeah, you really should have done some of the work yourself....changing claipers/discs/pads is a piece of piss.

also, prob not what you wannt hear, but 288mm go under 15" wheels perfectly, and the parts cost the same amount.

still, on the up side at least it should stop very very well.

napp, stops shite mate, lol. the servo ive installed isnt big enough to provide enough boost in the stysem. so if i get the cabrio im after im going to find an alternative servo for it, otherwise get a larger remote servo. stops ok, just have to put more force into it.

yeah, but the main problem being that there is only just enough pressure to the rear brakes to pass the MOT as its only on the servo on the front, it failed first time round then i adjusted the rear bias valve to boost the pressure and it just scraped through, so could do with a twin system servo so controll both front and rear, would rather get a different servo on it though, so i dont need a remote one.

how would a servo be affected if it happened to be dented a lot? ;)
