SW VR6 0
My 97 VR is still getting through a fair bit of oil. Can't find any leaks and there's no smoke, so thinking of changing the type of oil I'm using to see if it makes a difference.I'm currently using Syntha Gold (as recommend by VW), but thought I might give her a go with the semi synthetic Silver stuff to see if it slows the consumption down - will this cause any problems with the engine? What do you guys / gals use? Apologies if this has been asked several times before.Any thoughts / suggestions appreciated.Cheers...
binliner 0
Silver is what u should be using
SW VR6 0
I've heard a few people say that, but today I phoned 3 VW main dealers, 2 independants and VW HQ and they all said Gold!! ?! I presume yours ran well on the silver? Any idea why it's supposed to be better?
mk3anni 0
I belive Vince@stealth recomends silver. I would expect gold to be too thin.
VR6Pete 1,455
Vince recommends Silver as gold is too thin, if thats what the man says, that's what goes
badboyV6 4
Ive just put castrol RS fully sythetic 0w 40 in mine. Starting to get a little edgey about having done this. Thinking about performing a premature oil change to semi 10w 40. Any thoughts guys and girls?
acf8181 0
yeah, too thin.just stick with synta silver i reckon...its the safe thing to do.
Eat this 2
hmmm i use 5-40 full synthetic doesnt use too much the theory being i do alot of cold mileage and the thinner oil will get round the engine better when cold
badboyV6 4
I read on another site, that synthetic unlike semi or mineral acts as a detergent and over time removes built up sludge deposited- this can sometimes be ok- however on higher mileage cars (and a car youve bought you dont know the history of) its probably not such a good idea as cleaning the sludge can create unwanted tolerances which mean oil leaks etc. Went to a VW/Audi garage recently after buying my car and they advised me to perform an engine flush- didnt think that was sound advice.... SankysVR6 1
Don't bother with the engine flush a good quality oil such as (Synta Silver) has all the properties to keep the internals of the engine clean. If the oil gets dirty to quickly increase the oil change intervals to clean the engine out.
cliveyp 0
Synta silver here as i was always led to believe that gold is too thin. Just given mine the first oil change since i've had it, and the oil was really dirty. Thinking of changes every 5k ish from now.
Batfink 0
synta silver for me too!
BigSi 0
Just going to change my oil, so I'm glad I found this thread!Went into Halfords and on their chart it says to use 15/40.I have only done one previous oil change on this car and from the info I had at the time (from Demon Tweeks) was to use 10/40.Just spoke to the VW dealer in Macclesfield and they also said 15/40.Mine has run fine on the 10/40 Castrol Magnatec, same grade as the synta silver.I would agree with most of you that 5/40 (synta gold) is too thin.
