VR6-RR 0
Just need some clarification, just had the valve guide seals done and it it still smoking on the over run, especially when going down hill but not as bad as before. My mechanic said it is normal to smoke for a while and that it has been sitting in his garage for the last 5 weeks, but I'm not sure. And do I have drive it softly until its run in? Any info would be grateful.Richard
Eat this 2
have you had a compression test done?if the oil control rings were knackered itd give thoses symptoms
cabrioman 6
not heard of run in after steam seals being done but as eat this says could be oil scraper rings
boostjunkie 0
Mine does this too and I'm sure it's the rings,
VR6-RR 0
I hope its not, just spent close to a grand getting the head done and other bits and pieces. And it looks like I might have to get the bottom end done as well.Is there any difference between the 2.8 and 2.9 valve guide seals?as the engine in the car was taken out and replaced with the 2.9, and I'm wondering if the that makes a difference. MJ Vr6 79
Mate, Have you Decated your car?
RAPgolfvr6182 2
is it oil smoke or smoke from overfueling?
VR6-RR 0
Its oil smoke as I am topping up the oil, but I have not checked it since I got the car back. The car is on a J plate so it has a full de-cat.
RAPgolfvr6182 2
if youve had the head done and its still smoking it either the valve stems not sealing properly or the piston rings have worn! hve you checke the compression on each cylinder? to see what compression ur getting
boostjunkie 0
Unfortuanatly VR6 engine can have a problem with the old pump on the higher milage car's, basically Cylinder 5 at the back becomes partailly starved of oil and the rings wear, causing smoke on overrunMy mate works for VW and they say it's fairly common,
ingham 5
take it out and thrash the pants of it, mine was using oil and smoking , just before i when to rolling road at stealth racing , i was told to thrash it to kill it or cure it , and it cured it
MJ Vr6 79
Mate, when DeCatin, It will smoke as there are no restrictions. No CAT, no STORAGE.Some people see it and some dont. And also depends on what oil you use too....
VR6-RR 0
I like the idea of thrashing it to kill it or cure it, but I thrash it all the time and it just gets worst. if I drive sensibly it not too bad.Dont know what oil its running going to change it, but dont know what brand any sugesstions? And if it is not the oiol, i'm going to assume bottom end rebuild. boostjunkie 0
Mine knows nothing else but thrashing lol, It's the rings, I tried the oil change to 15/50 and running vw spec oil, no differance, bottom end wise I'm expecting to do the rings, balance the crank, flywheel and clutch, new shells and seals, oil pump and pick up, timing chains and tensioners, that should cure all lol

RAPgolfvr6182 2
you can get a paste that you use to rebuild the piston rings up but its last resort and not the best thing to do. i did it on my worn rings in my fiesta and that fixed its smoking

I'm going to get it serviced and tuned, and give it a week, its idling at about 550-600 rpm when warm. If that aint sorted it, just going to rebuild the bottom end and do what boostjunkie suggest with the crank and that.
boostjunkie 0
The reason I'm doing this is because, 1. it's basically refreshing the whole engine so really it should be good for many many years of good motoring2. next year I'm looking to turbo it, So most of the ground work will be done Some low comp pistons or a decomp plate and it's all good
