Valver 0
Guys just wanted to know if the chains themselves are pretty robust or if they stretch with mileage? My mate has stripped down my VR lump as we're rebuilding it (it had 140k on it), it didn't have the dreaded chain rattle but the plastic guide was quite worn - nearly to the rivets, which is when the noise starts iirc?.....Now, can I re-use the old twin chain or should it be replaced, bearing in mind it hasn't skipped or jumped on the sprockets etc so seems to be ok?.......It's about £60 +VAT from VAG so i'd rather not fork out if I dont really have to?......Cheers
jcorallo 0
Some stretch is inevitable, but the tensioner will wear out long before the chain stretches noticeably, IMHO.
Geastb 0
Valver - what exactly you having done? Mine is smoking a little and i think it may be bore wear - i'm quite tempted to strip it down and re-build rather than get a new engine (again).I was just wondering why you were rebuilding yours? High miles or worn?
acf8181 0
yep, they do stretch a fair bit.whilst you have it all off you really may as well replace everything...don't buy from vw, the exact same stuff costs half that price from ECP (not copies, genuine)
Valver 0
Cheers guys - might just get a new one from ECP then in that case....I can get trade from VAG through a mate but I've already spent a fortune.... Geastb> rebuilding due to miles really, it came out of a 140k Passat and drove really sweet (no smoke, chain rattle etc) but I'm dropping it into my Mk2 so thought as it's gonna be out and I've had the gearbox off to paint it etc, I may aswell do the chains, head gasket etc. Bores looked ok, thermostat housing had a few cracks but that was about it. Stealth are doing me a head rebuild so it should be nice and strong for when it goes in......
MarkGolf 6
Just got meself some new chains on ebay for £40, I got 2 sets, one with 80k and the other with 107k, if you really wanted to, you can have whatever ones for free.. But it is best to just get a new set..
mightyvr6 0
My mate changed all his guides and tensioners, everything apart from the chains but he found he couldn't get the cams to line up properly. It's because the chains has stretched. He put new chains on and the cam timing was spot on.
Valver 0
Cheers guys - new chains it is then.
six appeal 53
Dalj, definately go with new chains mate, after all the money/effort your putting in, it'd be a mare if you had to take it all back out/apart again, for the sake of £60!All chain will stretch by nature of what its doing (did mechanical science/metal stress and fatigue in my degree!) even with small torque stresses on it, let alone the VR grunt! LOL!
VR6Pete 1,455
I think i need my chains doing sounds roughers than a gnats testicle!
acf8181 0
pete, you really shouldn't need them doing with the mileage your car has, and the fact that its obd2.
jcorallo 0
if the chains ARE stretched to any degree, then its useless just buying new chains - as the cam sprockets will be 'worn' to the old chain.Jules
mickelson 0
2 questions please!!!!! mine is on 75k should i be thinking about changing the chain, it rattles a bit when cold but i put that down to oil etc. 2nd question but not wanting to digress too far from the topic, wots difference between obd 1 &
