VR6 Sluggish performance

Recommended Posts

hi,

im new to the forum and have just bought a golf vr6 1996. The car has done 120k, has some service history. These cars are know for there torque and power but this one is very slugish feels like a 1.4.

from 0-60 its quite slower then most other vr6's but after 80 it dies and struggles to get to 100. When you put your foot down after about 70 in f5th or even 4th gear there is no power and after ages it will get to bout 100.

mileage is quite high but i woudnt expect it too loose so much power during its life. got a few mates with vr6 and there will easily go to 140ish without any stuggle.

is there anything which could be wrong, a service should help but is there anything ellse that you may know which is making it so sluggish?

any help much appreciated, thanks

There is definately something wrong, diagnosing any fault is difficult at the best of times. The problems you face could be a 1001 things, start with the basics a service then go on from there. Maybe a more comprehensive description of your problems may be helpful........................ :-p

mines done 160 000 and scares most peeps who get in it so its not the mileage when you service it put an engine flush in before you drop the oil wynns avalible at halfroads and such

see if you can get someone to fault read it

mine was a bit ruff one day caost 14 quid for a blue temp sensor couldnt belive it was the same car after

you need to let us know is it obd1 or 2 what year and mods cheers

  • 2 weeks later...

I have had the car serviced. Changed oil, oil filter, air filter, spark plugs, HT leads and coolant.

still the car is sluggish, when you floor it in each gear it picks up speed but when driving normally there is no power/tourque, being a 2.8 it is very under powered. if you put it in 5th at about 40-50mph it will struggle to get to 100

a vr should hammer all the way to 130+, mine hit 145 (speedo reading) on a private test track of course while chasing a supercharged jag, needless to say he was not impresed lol, anyway in 5th gear at 30mph the car will feel slugish, like a 1.4. it wont come alive till 3200rpm, but a healthy vr6 will pull from 30 to 130+ in 5th. as per previous comments get it on vagcom, it could be something simple as a knackered sensor.

thanks for the help

i got it checked on vagcom, the guy at the garage checked it with a laptop and said the MAF sensor is gone.

he was saying to his collegaue code AAA or something like that. he didndt get me a printout or anything. and was quoted £270 for the MAF sensor.

now im not too sure if he was just trying to sell me the MAF or if that really was the probelm. So im going to try source a cheaper sone second hand or something.

anyone got one for sale?

Also today i fitted an air filter and the pipe which goes to the head got split so need a new one of those too. anyone know were i can get one from

Hi, I've got a barely used (just a couple of months in fact) MAF that I got from GSF (still in original box!). It's a fully reconditioned Bosch unit that I used to replace my original MAF. When I realised there was nothing wrong with the original (it was my HT leads at fault) I put the old MAF back on.

Yours for £35 inc postage. PM me if interested.
