ANThighline 0
Hi everyone, just a quickie. Am just lookin at purchasing some ht leads from euro car parts website but in the description it says 'NO KING LEAD'. Now excuse me if this sounds thick but what does this mean? Take it its referring to the fact that not everything comes in the set?? any ideas?? %-
binliner 0
the king lead is the one that goes from the distributor to the coil but only very early cars had this set up ... you wont need a king lead if you have a highline... Im presuming thats what they mean
ANThighline 0
Ta bin, can any1 else confirm this
VRmonster 1
well i can confirm that my 93 with distributor came with a king lead, but the firm i bought them from sent me a set without a king lead first, when i called they said they thought i had a later model, so id susspect that is the correct setup for you. acf8181 0
also, the leads for dizzy version are longer(as well as having the king lead) than the coilpack leads.
andy 0
binliner's right, 1994 onwards models don't have a distributor so don't need a King lead
acf8181 0
actually, its '93 on (i'm sure vrmonsters car was actually built in '92, but registered later)
andy 0
i just knew that post was coming after I posted ;-) meant to say 94 ish, wasn't exactly sure!!

acf8181 0
well, its only cause i know my '93 has a coilpack! then i checked in the bentley and it said all '93 on's did, and only '92 cars had the dizzy.i'm quite good at theory...but useless when it comes to actually working on the car (well, for more complex stuff anyway)
sundodger 0
Can anyone recommend a good manufacturer of HT Leads, and also the price of those from the "Stealer".Cheers in advance
acf8181 0
just get them from vw, they should be red, as they are much tougher at the plug end than any copies i've seen. cost £100ish.
andy 0
I believe the stealership ones are Beru, according to GSF their leads are Beru too, they're £56, anyone know if they're the same?
tommy 0
I believe the stealership ones are Beru' date=' according to GSF their leads are Beru too, they're £56, anyone know if they're the same?[/quote']Had mine replaced with bbt ones last service @ the dealer..........they charged me £47.50 + vat for the leads..........not sure if my dealer also uses beru too but ive had no problems with the bbt ones so far
tandino 1
I was hunting round for some leads when i first bought the car and had varrying quotes from different VW dealers over the SE of England.Iirc some were quoting me around £60+vat for the set or around £18 each - some slightly cheaper depending on length - go figure!I also tried Ford and they wouldnt/didnt sell the kit of 6 leads and seperately they worked out over £100 - so much for Ford being cheaper ~In the end i got a set of pattern leads - cant remember the make but good quality with decent OE ends and theyve been fine ever since.I think they were about £45 iirc....Pete. VRmonster 1
i got some black beru ones, so they didnt just come in red, i wish id have kept my standard red ones tho, they looked way better. go for OE red beru ones.
mightyvr6 0
beru reds used to be £120 from vw and they also sell a chaeper black lead set at about £50You could also consider magnecor or blue igniters, both top quality at about £80 a set.
tandino 1
I had problems with Blue igniters on my Mk1 - in the end i threw them away - where the leads went into the suppression cover that clips over the park plug was prone to arcing when wet - the car would misfire like a b'stard.Got a set of Beru leasds and no more problems. Also had a similar problem with Magnecor KV85's on my Saab turbo. The king lead had a slight wear area - less than 0.5 mm thickness worn off where it had been underneath a rad hose. This wear area although insignificant lead to horrendous arcing when the weather was wet - so much so that on the wway back from a track day at Goodwood the car conked out up a hill in the pissing rain on the inside lane of the A27 near Worthing jut wherre the hard shoulder had temporarily ended - Nice ~Once the lead was dried out it was ok until it got saturated again.....Not saying the Magnecor's werent good because when they wre new they were great however dont let anything rub them AT ALL Pete
sundodger 0
Cheers for the advice, I like the idea of the red leads, but prefer the price of the black ones! Mine are currently BBT's
mightyvr6 0
Buy the black leads and a can of red spray paint. Nobody will ever know.
