A PUNTO TURBO GAVE ME A RUN FOR MY MONEY!

Recommended Posts

I came across a very very old work mate at the lights earlier on today. He was driving a so called "punto turbo". We were chatting about the old times and he said lets have a race for old times sake, so ahead we went. From take off i was leading slightly, but then some prat decided to breakdown in the middle of dual carriage way. I braked and switched lanes quickly. After that i never really got back into the race, he leaded by a good 10 yards. All i know is i have a standard engine and one of my HT leads is causing a very tiny misfire. Should i be upset or this is expected from some cars. Bearing in mind ive seen off a few rs turbo's. This one kinda bugged me.

You're comparing a 1200+ Kg car to a 1000 or less Kg car! Fiat turbos have always been quick. Low mass and revvy, torquey turbo engines. But which would you rather have an accident in - perish the thought? Speed is one thing, general feel and structural integrity is another.....and it's a Punto!!

My mate used to have a Fiat Uno Turbo I.E which was frantically fast, but it felt like we were in an egg box, so no, I wouldn't be upset at all.

The VR is ancient, 80s 12V dinosaur designed to give big capacity smoothness in a convenient hatchback car. It was never intened to be a mega hatch but stick a Schrick on it and some 268 cams and you do have a mega hatch.

actually, punto's aren't that unsafe...2 stars for the older one (same as polo mkIV), 4 stars for the newer one (as good as anything else in its class, until the new megane appeared).

i was almost in an accident in a punto GT once...a mate of a mate had borrowed one, and gave us a lift...little did i know the boy was gonna drive like a fool. 125mph he slams the brake pedal to the floor...ona corner...the thing went mental sideways and was hoping on three wheels...was quite scary!

  • 1 year later...

might have been quick on the dual carriageway but surely on a longer stretch after about 100mph you would pull away much faster and destroy him!! just like the civic type R. upto a 100 they will make you squeeze every drop of the VR but after a 100, you will start to pull like i did on 5 cylinders lol.

Has anyone ever raced a Honda Prelude 2.2 V-Tec in a standard VR?

My mate has just got one and we're gonna be 'going at it' soon. Looked up the stats online and the Honda has slightly higher bhp but lower torque, so i assume he'll have me up until the 90 - 100 mph mark, then i should pull away?

My mate also had a punto turbo, his one was real nice looking and quick. I reckon to 60 or 70 the punto could stay level, after than, as usual, the VR will tank past.

Plus the fact the the VR will start the next morning, FIAT = Fix It Again Tommorrow. :)
