I fitted a set of 312 to my VR a while back, and since my girlfriend saw the light and bought a VR, she wanted them too.

She had 280 originally, which i changed to 288 imediatlly.

Saved up the extra pennies and have now fitted 312`s...

.. what u think.. :)

288

There behind 17`s by the way, and just been washed ( hence rusty`ness) :?

have been reading about this conversion and they do look sweet behind those wheels.

speedo-do you know if that set-up will fit in behind 16" wheels too, they have just done this conversion on a mk.4 turbo in vw driver running 16" wheels so i'm presuming

it will? perhaps a thread with the parts required and potential costs would be an idea for the rest of our readers to peruse?

vrmonster-there is no real advantage to upgrading the rears to bigger discs unless running large horsepower, as @ 60% of braking is from the fronts anyhow, and you would run the risk of overbraking the rear which leads to all sorts of horrible handling probs with potentially fatal consequences, as i'm sure that mr.farmer will no doubt endorse being a race driver and knowledgable force on this forum!

well i am planning big power, how does 350 bhp and similar torque sound, but it is mainly just for the looks, lol. i never thought about over braking the rear, i think i should just stick to standard then. ill just chrome the calipers to give them the needed bling factor to match the front eh?

well, a bit more rear bias wouldn't be a problem if you know what your doing..i.e. don't brake whilst cornering! if you drive any race car and brake in the middle of a corner you'll be of the road backwards before you know whats going on. actually, a friend of mine keeps complaining of too much rear bias on his mkII at the mo...but i thinks its spot on! (is perfect when braking properly).

theres a also a theory that uprating the front brakes too much can lead to similar handling problems as over-braking on the rear...basically if you have too much front brakes the rear could theoretically try and step out cause it can't slow down quick enough, but i've yet to see this occur.

yes come on y'all, we need the full sp on this conversion to perfect our late(make that very late!) braking techniques in order to get the jump on some of the less-power-but-quicker-accelerating so called hot hatches out there! any advantage in slowing the car quicker is a better move than going quicker in my book! part no's and new prices would be handy too! and also the extra bits to go from 280mm not just 288mm.

Speedo, what is involved in fitting these 4Motion 312mm discs? Are the 4Motion calipers used as well or are the VR6 ones modified to fit? Are any adapter plates required? If so, can these be bought or do they need to be custom-fabricated?

I'm sure a lot of people would be interested in this conversion, with aftermarket big brake conversions costing so much.

i've yet to be outbraked by anyone or anything on the road! and i still have 280's!

ok, from my etka cd, part numbers for the parts needed to do this conversion, remembering that i haven't done it myself yet. correct me if anyone finds any mistakes.

VW

- 3A0 615 123 - 288mm Brake caliper housing (left)

- 3A0 615 124 - 280mm Brake caliper housing (right)

*- 447 615 273 - bleeder valve

*- 211 611 483 - dust cap

*- 3A0 698 471 - housing seals

AUDI

- 8N0 615 125 - TT caliper carrier x2

- 8N0 615 301 A- TT OEM 312mmx25mm discs x2

*- 4D0 698 647 - guide bush set

*- N 907 085 02- locking bolt

Notes:

* = i dont know if these are included with the caliper sets, or the carrier sets, so ask when ordering.

you can get the 288mm calipers in red, just add A to the end of the part number. but the audi 312mm carriers dont come in red, so would need to be painted to match.

the discs are not needed as you could buy some black diamonds or another aftermarket disc. just ensure theyre 5x100 studs, and 312mmx25mm discs.

i have no idea what type of pads are needed to fit with these or how big the spacer should be that is needed between the caliper carrier and the strut. so someone with experience needs to chime in or pm me. hope this helps. if needed ill try and get the etka printout uploaded.

OOOOPs sorry ... not been on-line for a while.

Cheers vrmonster for the pt. nos.

you need a 5m spacer between carrier and hub to correct the offset.

The pads i am using are my 288 pads , EBC greenstuff, they are the same for 312.

I am also using my original 288 calipers on the 312 carriers.

if you are still unfortunate to be running 280`s, then sell them to someone with a mk2 ;) , and with the money look for a set of 288. I have picked up 3 sets recently all for around £60 each.... as they seem to be quite common. ie all 95> golf 5stud, passat`98>, audi, ect...

its def. worth the jump. :)
