Anyone else noticed the amount of VR6's 4sale?

Having my normal evening browse on ebay/piston-heads/auto-trader and there seems to be alot of MK3 Golf VR6's on the market?

They vary from proper show winners (£5K+).. to some good example high milers (£1.5K+). Is it normal this time of year that people change their cars...i.e getting closer to xmas..?

Just got me wondering if I ever sold mine, what it'd be worth...? Just got to remember your mods might not be to everyone's taste... but we aren't in this market to make money!

I'd remove my brakes if i ever sold the car.. was too much hassle for me to get them to fit.. sell them on to some who's appreciate them.

You can't beat a VR6.. but I agree with what you said about environment etc.. not the greenest and tax man will have you.. also alot of young dudes can't afford the insurance..

So why you reckon so many on the market for sale...? people just move on..? or not enough them have been introduced to this club..?

i guess there is still this myth that V6 motors need there chains etc done and people read up about it and probably sell them on before they get to that point.. i suppose the maintenance on a VR is alot more than jap car.. and when your spending £2K+ on a car, thats what you want to keep down..?

A lot of people buy the car then run it for a year as they got a loan for one and paid insurance for a year with loan, then when renewal comes round they cant afford it. They are still quite expansive to insure when you're under 25 like most are who want em. unless you know where to go for insurance

I think they're just too old now to be of interest to the mainstream buyer.

The mk3 GTI & VR6 have actually stood the test of time very well, just as the mk1 & mk2 GTi did before them. I mean, how many L & M reg Astra GSis, Escort RS2000s, 306 GTi-6s & Renault 19 16Vs do you see about these days? Not many. Compared with LOADS of Golf mk3 GTi/VR6s

The only non-VW hot hatch that I can think of which has matched the VR6 for longevity is the 90's Honda Civic. You still see quite a few of these.

Of course, in the VW enthusiasts community, the VR6 will live on for at least another 30 years!

they are realy expensive to run if you have no luck.

for example my first MOT cost 650 quid.

It was going to fail this year on all the breaks so iv uprated them and fitted a scorpion exhaust. Also the bushes were knackered so proflex ones were fitted. then my brake pipes were damaged so braided flexi's were fitted and new brake pipes. decided i wanted coilovers. So the cost so far and it aint even MOT'd yet about 1200!!!

probably half the value of my car but in my eyes well worth it and i aint finished yet.

insurance aint that bad im 24 i have 3 years NCD and i have all mods declared for 286 fully comp with a 50 quid excess.

they are basically just to expensive to use as an everyday car.

Well i'm now selling my beautiful dragon green 3dr thats in mint condition with only 97.5k on the clock (slip in a ad) basically because i've bought a porsche.

Someone is coming to look at the VR tonight and i think that one look at it and it'll sell, as i'm only asking 2750 for it, its just had new catback jetex and whole new suspension, new tyres, camber and alignment done, new MOT and 6 months tax. Bargain.

Although i've now got a porsche i will really miss my VR, she has never let me down in three years and starts first time every time, i think that the mk 3 VR has got to be one of the greatest cars of the last 20 years, they have got so much character.

Also i would like to say that VR6OC is by far the best car forum on the net which is another good reason to have one.

I think the vrs just have a badass cool factor about them, I mean come on, golfs are just plain cool anyway and everyone likes a golf but a golf with a 2.8 engine in. Coooolness. Loads of cars blast up and down my road and I get heaps of looks and nods in mine.

I went from a 16v mk2 crx, which to be fair was an insanely awesome car for the money. if you ever need a cheap ass run around that is fast, handles well with all the electric toys you can now get a valver for about £600, just serious body rot is an issue. I love my vr though and as mentioned earlier, the only to sell up would be to get an r32.

The only reason that us lot are getting high maintenance bills now is that previous owners havent done anyting to them.

They drive them to death then sell them on, someone else buys them thinking they can fix them up, fix a couple of things and sell them on again.

Once you have got them up to standard they are cheap AND easy to work on.

The Golfs are well beyond anything else on the market at their age, VW's always have been, build quality and the kind of people they attract, Jap pocket rockets attract the kind of people that rag the cars to death and dont up keep them, they just sell them on.

The chain on the VR is nothing to worry about, once the gearbox is out for the clutch it is a case of a couple of blanking plates, getting it to TDC, taking out the tensioner/s and replace chain and tensioner/s, job done.

Long live the VR6!!
